The news we've all been waiting for!

http://twitter.com/#!/SteelersDigest/statuses/97704689465966594 (http://twitter.com/#%21/SteelersDigest/statuses/97704689465966594)

The Steelers signed unrestricted free agent cornerback William Gay to a deal this afternoon.

Gay was the Steelers fifth-round pick in 2007 out of Louisville.

The Steelers now have their top three cornerbacks back from last year's Super Bowl team. Gay will likely assume the nickle back position in the Steelers' defense.

Secondary problems are essentially resolved.

Oh Boy!! Thank goodness! The world can NOW go on!! Woooot! We are now the best secondary in the history of the NFL!

On a more serious and realistic note, it was almost a given that he would be brought back. The Steelers are having an open competition at cornerback opposite Ike Taylor. Every available body needs to be on hand to fight for that job. It's anybody's slot at this point but I'm hoping atleast Butler or Brown can nail down that starting job. I'll take the growing pains for the potential upside that we have not seen with Gay yet.

As long as William Gay is the #4 CB at best...

This is just as bad a signing as Dsep IMO both are a waste of cap..

Eh... Gay may or may not be cut later but they know that he can play a somewhat decent nickelback, which is more than what could be said about the rookies and many of the current CBs. If you have Gay, you have a player who knows what he is doing, and if one of the other CBs shows up bigtime in camp you can always cut him again.

To be fair, I love seeing Gay blitz the QB. He's quick and he always seems to get there in time.

Take him off a WR and he's decent.

I still think that if the defense was stronger up the middle (say a faster ILB and a faster FS), Gay wouldn't be so easy to pick on.

It's no wonder were over the cap we never sign anyone to a 1 year deal this is a waist we could invest in Cromartie or Carlos Rodgers instead of this scrub

Such a disappointment. There's a reason no other teams go after these guys. I'm hoping it's just for precautionary reasons and Butler/Brown will win a job ahead of him on the depth chart, making him expendable. I'd really be furious to see him the starting nickel week 1.

The cornerback situation is bizarre in Pittsburgh. Having a former HOF CB as a defensive coordinator and a former DB coach as head coach, it's surprising that they are clueless about how to bring in new guys into the system. That's why Tomlin made a desperate move to bring back a corner who had a horrible year in Arizona. Then they let Anthony Madison see the field in the playoffs over guys like Lewis and Butler. Are they that scared to let a non-veteran on the field?

I heard no guaranteed money, which means no "dead money" if we cut him. Good move

Decent nickelback...but still lacking the #2 CB. Brutal.

Ike is a decent corner. If we had a nickelback, we'd have a decent secondary. We don't. He isn't.

1 year deals are a waste... why?

Look how we handled the Flozell situation... 2 years. First year, cheap... Second year, $ sky rockets. If they dont renegotiate, cut em.

However I would love to see Rodgers come in :)

I hope one of these young guys is the truth for us @ CB...

This is a safe move, and fortunately for the Steelers he wasn't getting much attention in Free Agency. Basically this is a win since it's only a 1 yr. deal. If he sucks this year you can just release him. If he steps up and has a solid year then you can bring him back to a new deal.

This is how a lot of teams handle veterans these days, especially ones that are on the edge either because their performance on the field is inconsistent or they have off the field issues.

We'd all love to see Gay step up and have a great year, but none of us are holding our breath.

That would be ideal... He's just another camp body at this point.

He's gotta compete for a spot on the roster and if he doesn't make it clear he is better than Keenan, Cortez, Crezdon, and Brown. Then they cut him.

I really believe that Carnell will do a better job with the secondary this year... Kind of like Kugler has been an obvious improvement for the O-Line.

This is a safe move, and unfortunately for the Steelers he wasn't getting much attention in Free Agency.

Fixed.

And I wonder why a very affordable"decent nickelback" didn't generate any offers from any other teams.

Oh wait. I'm pretty sure I know why.
