Though losers in the Super Bowl, the Steelers were winners today in federal court, scoring a contempt of court order against clothes maker Nicholas Wohlfarth and his firm Turtle Creek Sportswear, and stripping from him a season's worth of profits from his sale of various black-and-gold goods.

U.S. District Judge Terrence F. McVerry ruled that Mr. Wohlfarth violated a 2005 consent order enjoining him from marketing knock-off shirts, hoodies and hats by selling a slew of products with symbols that suggested Steelers trademarks. Disclaimer stickers advising buyers that the goods were not officially licensed NFL goods didn't cut it, the judge ruled.

He ordered Mr. Wohlfarth to immediately recall any unsold goods that violated the 2005 order, and, preferrably, donate them to a foreign charity. He also ordered an accounting of all profits from the sale of Steelers-like apparel by Turtle Creek Sportswear, with the profits since June to go to the Steelers.

Failure to comply will get Mr. Wohlfarth a $200-a-day fine, the judge decided.

You can't make money from a trademarked logo by changing it up or removing part of it and expect to get away with it.

seen a lot of knockoffs here in Ohio. Really upsets me, but, I am glad to hear the violators are finally being meant to pay up.

This stuff with the "hypocloids" was all over the strip in Pittsburgh when I was there. It's pretty obvious that it's not NFL licenced merchandise. They had player stuff printed with #86 Phsycho. Most of it was pretty lame, but it was definately cheaper.
