Chuck Tanner, who led the Pittsburgh Pirates to the 1979 World Series championship, has died.
He was 81.
Born July 4, 1929 in New Castle, Lawrence County, Tanner led the Pirates to second-place finishes in the National League East during his first two seasons as manager. In 1979 they won 98 games, held off the Montreal Expos and captured the division by two games.
After sweeping the Cincinnati Reds to claim the NL pennant, the Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles in seven games in the World Series, their first title in eight years.

The guy was a gem, coached some real interesting characters, and they all seemed to jel as a unit (just ask the Baltimore Orioles). When I think of those Pirate teams I think, one, the Ugliest uniforms ever (who thought of those stove pipe hats), minus Tekulve and Moreno a pretty overweight team (magnified by the unis), and thirdly, a clutch team. I also remember getting in Three Rivers Stadium for 3 bucks on college night, another 2 bucks in the ushers hand got you in field level seats.

R.I.P chuck.. I still have fond memories of the '79 world championship...I was a ten year old kid rushing home from school to see the scores...i believe they were still showing a few of the world series games during the afternoon then...I was at the 30 year celebration of the '79 series at PNC a few years ago following the game KC and the sunshine band played to a full house...god how i wish the pirates could become relevant again, but i don't see baseball fixing itself anytime soon...It's really great to reminisce about those great days
