Facing Arch-Rival Flyers Adds To Opening Night Excitement:

Finally, after years of hype and buildup, CONSOL Energy Center will officially make its regular-season debut on Thursday night when the Penguins begin the 2010-11 campaign by hosting the Philadelphia Flyers at 7 p.m. in a nationally-televised contest on Versus.

http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=539743&navid=DL|PIT|home

I'm so jealous of everyone who will be in the new Arena tonight for the start of the season and start of a new era in Pittsburgh sports. There's no better team to be playing than the Flyers. I can't wait to watch it.

How proud must Mario be today? He's had many great moments, 3 cups, come backs from cancer and retirements but I think this may very well be his biggest moment. Thank You big guy! The night is yours, enjoy the moment you deserve it!

Well just past halfway and we're still losing, man that would suck to lose to the Flyers in the opening of the new building. On a separate note, how awesome is the Flyers goalie's name? BOBS is a great nickname.

It was almost as if they were skating in slow motion. They didn't have that extra jump in their legs. The Ruskie rookie won it for the Flyers. We'll be fine I look for Comrie to have a great year. It's going to be a battle all year with the Devils and Flyers.

I guess he didn't play as bad as he has been this year. But he gave up 3 goals on about 22 shots. That usually isn't good enough. But he did make a couple nice saves and we did get 2 points. Luckily the Pens had 40+ shots.

No not at all, although I'd start BJ the next game and ride him until his hot steak is over. :) But we need MAF to get his act together and start playing like a #1 $5 million a year goalie.

I'd agree that you ride the hot streak but I don't think its good to have MAF stagnate on the bench for any long stretch. I think the way to get out of a funk is to see more rubber. It sure is nice to have a legitimate backup to put out there.

I was working in the kitchen during Wednesday's game. I know there were a good bit of penalties from what I heard on the radio. I also know one of the goals was off I believe a bad power play pass that led to a break away for Marty St.Louis. Jordan Staal skated last week I believe. However, they haven't really put a time table on it. Also Michalek is still out due to injury.

Well I made the trip back to Pittsburgh for the weekend. Picked up some tickets and we headed to the Pens game. Before the game at the hotel bar we hung out with many of the Flyers fathers. They were all in on a players/dad trip. A great bunch of proud dads and it was really cool talking to them. The new arena is awesome, great to watch the game and also some spectacular views of the city walking around the concourse. The game start was insane, I almost thought I was at a taping of Slapshot II! :) The first period they played well than they came out flat in the second and stayed flat. Even though they lost it was still a great time and MAF seems to being getting his act together. The 1st month wasn't great for the Pens but I believe they'll be fine.

SteelerDan43
10-31-2010, 11:31 AM
MAF has done this before, let's not act like he isn't prone to slumps. Not that uncommon for a 25 year old goalie. He is still the number 1 goalie, no matter what Johnson does.

I love when people say johnson is our best chance to win a game right now...fleury is our best chance to win the stanley cup....bylsma's throwing mud against the wall to see what sticks for this week coaching philosophy sucks..fleury knows how to play goal and isn't going to learn something new or see something he's doing wrong on tape while sitting on the bench twiddling his thumbs...these people ripping fleury are just like the people who were saying "should batch remain the starter when ben returns"...those were team wins and team losses you flip-flop who played goal each game and probably fleury has all the wins and johnson has all the losses...don't know how this panic button philosophy has started to infect pittsburgh sports fans, but it needs to end...the steelers philosophy of playing your best players and sticking with them through tough times is a proven winner, it builds character and forces the other players to rally around the struggling player and play better themselves...

How can you justify sitting a guy on the bench who has a .960 save percentage? I don't care if he is a career back or not. Hasn't he earned the right to play?

It really is hard to understand how their PP is so bad. You have two of the three best players in the league on the ice. Geno and Crosby yet they can not manage to score. Something needs to be done soon. I watch the power play and cringe. So many passes along the outside. So much passing in general. Put someone in front of the goalie. Throw pucks to the net and crash it. Absolutely beyond frustrating to watch.

I missed the game. By the score it looks like Mr. Johnson has come back to earth.

Why is Godard on the roster? He's a wasted piece of flesh.

The mystery of the power play better get figured out or it will be a long season. Teams will beat on us and injuries will follow if they don't respect our PP.

Definitely,LNJ....as good as our pk and defense has been....offense has been unlucky(but winning)...last few games looked like there could have been at least five goal nights each...a post here, a crossbar there, a lot of jumping pucks...not getting beat by opposing goalies but dumb luck....but they keep chopping and get some goals out of it...should be more...they'll start going in...for malkin especially.....everything seems to be gelling nicely.

The Flyers are very good this year. They really seemed to odd grown from their playoff run last year. They are deeper at both end of the ice then the Pens. :yesnod: 6 in a row.

Even though Sid had a HT he blew his chance to to score every way when he missed a penalty shot. Mario is the only player ever to score 5 ways in one game. Even, short handed, penalty, power play and empty net. Sid would of got 4 because his empty netter was also short handed.

This defense is really clicking all of a sudden. Reminds me of how this team played Detroit in the Cup a few years back: Get the puck outta there. Shot prevention = wins, especially when Fleury and Johnson are playing well.

How about a pat on the back for Conner as well? He's doing pretty well for this team right now.

The Pens fans took over that arena like the Steelers fans often do at away games. It was a great thing to see. They are certainly clicking on all cylinders now without Stahl and Geno. Sid and Kunitz have great chemistry together, the 3rd line just keeps coming at you night after night, Conner has earned a spot on the team. The Penguins are the best and hottest team in the NHL with the best and hottest player.

Remember when things weren't so good? When they didn't have a 10-game winning streak and they didn't lead the league in points, as they do going into their game tonight against Toronto. When center and captain Sidney Crosby didn't have a 16-game points streak and wasn't the league's leading scorer, as is the case now?

The Penguins aren't the types to toss around I-told-you-sos, but they could if they wanted.

Over the first several weeks of the season, when the club wasn't very successful at Consol Energy Center, wasn't getting the most out of No. 1 goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, wasn't winning at a rate that seemed appropriate for its talent level, the Penguins refused to flinch.

"You have a choice when you're dealing with things, whether it's adversity in the locker room or in general in sports or just in life," forward Mike Rupp said Tuesday after practice. "Which way are you going to handle it? We went about it in a particular way."

That was to pick out the good, the bad and the ugly -- seeing more good than a lot of their critics on many nights -- and repeatedly talking about believing in themselves and trusting that their game was going to yield more wins than losses soon enough.

"I don't think anybody's too worried about the questioning [we faced] or people who thought we weren't where we needed to be," Crosby said. "There were times we didn't play well and we didn't win, and I think we were pretty honest with ourselves in evaluating that. I think the most important thing is to evaluate yourself honestly. I think we were able to do that through that stretch.

"It's nice to see us get rewarded for some good hockey now."

The Penguins started out 7-8-1, a mediocre run that would have been dismal if not for a four-game winning streak at one point, especially for a club considered a Stanley Cup contender.

The low point might have been the 0-3 start at their new arena. Or a 3-2 loss Oct. 29 at home to Philadelphia that prompted a players-only postgame meeting. Or a no-show in a 5-2 loss Nov. 3 at Dallas.

The last straw -- or at least the last time the Penguins lost in regulation before what has grown to a 12-0-1 string -- came Nov. 10, when the Penguins collapsed in the third period at home, giving up five goals in a 7-4 loss.

After most of their losses, though, the Penguins talked about doing good things despite the outcome.

"We've always said if we play a particular way, we're not too concerned about the wins and losses because we know the wins will come," Rupp said. "And they are now."

Coach Dan Bylsma swears he fully expected the turnaround based on what he saw from his club.

"This is probably going to seem odd: I was confident when things were not going well that we were going to play good hockey just like we are right now," Bylsma said. "I was confident in Marc-Andre Fleury. I was confident in my team and how we were going to play."

That's not just hindsight talking. Bylsma said, other than some breakdowns and an occasional off night, he thought his team had the horses, had the right system in place and was playing well enough to win.

Even a newcomer such as defenseman Paul Martin, who signed as a free agent in July, could see light approaching.

"It's just in how you handle it," Martin said. "With all the guys they have here and all the success they've had in previous years, the young team they have, they were going to have that success.

"Earlier, we were doing a lot of good things. We were just making a couple of mistakes here or there and getting away from what we needed to do. Now that we're on this little streak and winning some games, I think we realize how good we can be when we do those things. Hopefully, we'll continue to do it. It makes more sense as you see what it produces."

It's highly doubtful the Penguins will win each of their remaining 53 games this regular season, and there could be stretches with less than desirable results.

The Penguins expect to use the same approach they had early on.

"That's not going to change the next time we lose a few," Crosby said. "There are going to be questions. If anything, it's good for us as a group to see that. Sometimes you work hard, you do a lot of good things, and you don't always get rewarded. I think it's nice for all of us to see it [work out]."

The Caps’ team will be led by Peter Bondra. Full rosters for the Penguins and Capitals alumni will be announced in the near future.

“We all grew up playing on outdoor rinks, so we’re really looking forward to having this chance to skate on the Winter Classic rink at Heinz Field,” Lemieux said. “There is so much history between the Penguins and Capitals and it will be good to get together and see friends on both benches.”

For $25, fans will be able to purchase one ticket that will enable them to attend both the Alumni Game at 9:30 a.m. and the Pittsburgh Penguins’ practice session at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 31 at Heinz Field.

Seating capacity for these Dec. 31 events will be 10,000. Tickets will be available for sale starting Friday, Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 1.800.745.3000.

The Washington Capitals’ 2 p.m. practice will be closed to the public.

The alumni game and NHL team practices will be the first official events on the Winter Classic rink at Heinz Field. The 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will be played on the same rink Saturday, Jan. 1 at 1 p.m.

We had a great time even though the score didn't cooperate. Conner is great, the dude is like a little smurf. He is funny to watch when he tries to check someone. The long-anticipated wait for the premiere episode of HBO Sports “24/7 Pens-Caps: Road to the Winter Classic” all-access series is almost over for Penguins fans.

The first episode debuts Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 10 p.m., exclusively on HBO. Viewers can tune in to watch the show following Wednesday’s 7 p.m. contest against the New York Rangers.

The four-episode, all-access series will take viewers inside the rivalry between Pittsburgh and Washington and will follow the Penguins and the Capitals as they battle twice in nine days, starting with a 7 p.m game in Washington at the Verizon Center on Dec. 23.

That contest, however, is the preview to the main event. The series will put the players in the spotlight as they prepare for the 2011 NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic, to be played outdoors at Heinz Field on Saturday, Jan. 1 at 1 p.m.

The show is going to give Penguins fans an unprecendented behind-the-scenes look at captain Sidney Crosby, head coach Dan Bylsma and the rest of the team. Not only will HBO’s cameras be in the locker room, the training room, team meetings, and coaches offices, but they’ll also be following the players as they go about their lives outside of the rink.

HBO's cameras have been in the building since the team's annual Christmas party on Sunday, Dec. 5. They won't stop filming until after New Year's Day.

For a preview of what's in store, see the video clips posted below.

For those who can’t watch the premiere's original airdate, there will be plenty of opportunities to catch what they missed. The replay dates for Wednesday’s premiere episode are as follows (all times are EDT):

HBO:
Wednesday, Dec. 15: 11 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 16: 5:00 p.m. and midnight
Friday, Dec. 17: 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 18: 10:30 a.m. and 11:15 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 19: 9:00 a.m.
Monday, Dec. 20: 5 p.m. and 1:20 a.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 28: 2 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 30: 1:30 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 8: 1:30 p.m.

And here's the scheduled debuts for the remaining three episodes, all of which will air on HBO:
Episode #2: Wednesday, Dec. 22 – 10 p.m.

I don't get that. They're just gonna give the tickets away to some random person? If I didn't like the Pens, much less if I didn't like hockey, I would have no desire to sit outside for 4 hours in the freezing cold.

Yes Geno has been on a roll since he returned. MAF made some great saves again too, and stood continues to be Sid. What is different is how good we have been on D this year, and fighting like we are the 70 Flyers. Did you see that knockout punch tonight? The great D is going to be huge come playoff time. Props to disco Dan for getting them to play his system. If we can get Stahl back, and grab 1 winger at the deadline we could be celebrating in June.

It wasn't much of a fight Deryk Engelland knocked out Taylor Pyatt. You have to give Pyatt credit for even fight him. He's not a fighter and never stood a chance. Cook slammed their top scorer in the head and after that it wasn't a clean game.

Is it really that bad there? When I lived in NoVa during the Mario days we'd go to the Caps Pens games and there would literally be 4000+ Pens fans. It was always a great time, especially in the Playoffs coming back from being down 3-1 and winning the series.

OTTAWA -- The Penguins' charter jet touched down here a bit after 9 a.m. Sunday, setting up a long day. It took several hours for it to become apparent that their two-day Christmas break was catching up with them.

That reality set in during the first period of a 3-1 loss to Ottawa at Scotiabank Place, when the Senators scored twice and the Penguins looked as disjointed as they have during any period this season.

"It's the same for both teams," Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said of the NHL-mandated respite, "but we looked kind of abnormally sloppy. You have tough periods sometimes, but that was pretty bad in the first. Why? Who knows? I'm sure [the break] had a little bit to do with it. ... That's not really an excuse."

Crosby gave the Penguins a strand of tinsel to gaze at when he scored his 30th goal at 16:38 of the third to extend his points streak to 24 games.

"It's good, but I look back to the first and I wish we would have been better, wish I would have been better," Crosby said. "You never like finishing a game regretting how you started or how you played. That can't happen. At the same time, we stuck with it, and we've got to build off of that."

The Penguins, who had won three games in a row and 15 of their previous 17, were outshot in the first period, 12-6, with Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson getting an assist on Mike Fisher's power-play goal and scoring during a delayed-penalty call. Karlsson added a second Ottawa power-play goal 20 seconds into the second.

The Penguins made Senators goaltender Brian Elliott work, finishing with a 45-24 shot advantage, but it all came back to the poor start.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma, who, in the past, has at times seen signs that his club might come out flat and altered routines to try to stem that, was caught off guard.

"None at all," he said of indications the first period wouldn't go well. "There's always an eye on the fact that you're coming back from two days where you don't skate, but that wasn't any different for them or us."

Crosby was in the penalty box for hooking Jesse Winchester when Fisher scored. He would have been headed to the box for slashing Karlsson before Karlsson scored his first goal.

Asked if those calls helped contribute to his obvious frustration, Crosby said dryly, "Yeah, if they were penalties."

In addition to the hooking call and what would have been the slashing call, Crosby got tagged with another hooking call midway through the second period when Ottawa defenseman Chris Phillips ended up on his wallet after being part of a short-handed two-on-one breakaway.

Crosby didn't like any of the calls.

"It was a one-handed slash," he said of the move on Karlsson along the right-wing boards. "You can call it a slash. [It's probably not] if he doesn't put his hand up in the air or whatever he did. Karlsson sold a few early on. That's what happens sometimes.

"On the Phillips one, I don't even think I touched him. It looked like he fell to me when he was turning.

"That wasn't the difference, though. At the end of the day, we didn't play well in the first, and that was the difference."

A case likely could have been made that coming out of the first period trailing by just 2-0 was reason for the Penguins to believe that if they could straighten things out they could get back in the game. After all, they are the top team in the NHL in terms of points and wins.

"I think great teams find a way to recognize what's going on and manage the game accordingly," Penguins forward Craig Adams said. "If we didn't feel great in the first 10 minutes, you keep it simple, get pucks deep and play in their end. We didn't do that.

"It would have been nice to get that kill at the start [of the second period]."

That was the Ottawa power play that carried over from the first on perhaps a questionable charging call Chris Kunitz got, drawn by -- who else -- Karlsson in the final minute of the first period.

Karlsson made it 3-0 20 seconds into the second on a shot from the left point. His shot from the right point at 9:14 of the first period deflected off the stick of Penguins defenseman Paul Martin and off Fisher's body or the upper part of his stick and past Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury -- who had been 15-1-1 in his past 17 starts.

Karlsson got what turned out to be the winner on a blast from the center point.

It's the first period that will most haunt the Penguins.

"For the most part I'd say the last six weeks, the first period's been pretty good," Adams said. "We don't want to let that happen again, for sure."
