I'd rather drop a game like this B4 the Classic, maybe a kick in the *** going into it will set them off!!

The warm weather wouldn't be the problem. If anything it's gonna be the rain.

Rain would not be good at all. It will freeze on contact making the ice hard to keep smooth. I know they say they have a backup plan that would move the game to sunday. I hope they dont cause it will conflict with the steelers game

The Alumni game tomorrow morning at 9:30 is being streamed on hnl.com and the penguins site.

We need a tab for how many points Mario will have.

Almost time to drop the puck for the Alumni. The Pens/Caps of the 90's was a great time. Especially for me being a Pgh guy, I spent most of the 80's in the DC area. From 91 - 96 they met 5 times in the playoffs and the Pens won 4 of them. 2 times coming back from being down 3-1. Many of those involved take to the ice shortly. It's sure to be fun to watch. I look for Mario to have a HT and the Pens to win again. :)

By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Penguins aren't sharing whirlpools with an HBO camera crew anymore.

Heinz Field has gone back to being a football stadium.

And the next time any of the Penguins skate outdoors, it likely won't be in anything more competitive than a family outing.

With the Winter Classic and all of its trappings and distractions now nothing more than a memory, the final three-plus months of the Penguins' season figure to be significantly different from the past.

What can't be determined yet is how the team will handle the transition back to business as usual.

Will the players be relieved or disappointed that the spotlight in which they operate has been reduced to its customary wattage? Have a letdown or be grateful to slip into a more typical routine?

"There's definitely a trap there," defenseman Brooks Orpik said. "I think everybody had fun with [the TV show and outdoors game]. But from what I've heard, everyone was ready to move on and get it over with."

But while the Penguins speak optimistically about not sagging in the near future, no one can know for sure how they will perform in coming days.

"I think it's up to us to make sure that we don't have that letdown," defenseman Paul Martin said. "That we come out ready to play against Tampa Bay [Wednesday]."

To a man, the Penguins agreed that having a few days to decompress from all of the unusual issues with which they'd been dealing -- from HBO to the outdoors game to family visiting for the holidays -- should work to their benefit. Having to play the Lightning Monday night, just 48 hours after their 3-1 loss to Washington at Heinz Field, several suggested, would have been daunting.

"I think that makes a big difference, as opposing to playing after a one-day break," Martin said. "It's nice to have a couple of days to let that clear, then go ahead and focus on Tampa."

Coach Dan Bylsma cancelled practice Sunday so that his players could rest, recuperate and re-focus after being immersed in the hoopla (and waist-deep water) of the Winter Classic, but kept them on the ice for about 90 minutes Monday.

The final half-hour was devoted to a three-on-three scrimmage and shootout competition, but the first two-thirds of the session featured intense, down-to-business drills. If anyone had to be reminded that 42 regular-season games remain, that workout should have done it.

"It was important to have a really hard practice," Orpik said.

Bylsma didn't just put his players through a demanding workout; he broke out a couple of new forward combinations.

The No. 2 line had Jordan Staal between Evgeni Malkin and Tyler Kennedy, while Matt Cooke and Chris Conner flanked Mark Letestu on the No. 3 unit.

"[Kennedy] adds a disruption factor and a speed factor to a line that other guys on our team don't match," Bylsma said. "Speed on the forecheck, chasing the puck down, tenacity-wise, pursuing the puck. That's Tyler's strong suit, and that's what we're looking for."

Staal and Malkin have been united in an effort to generate offense; whether they can tap into whatever goal-scoring potential Kennedy has is unclear. Kennedy has five goals in 39 games, just one in his past 19.

Although Kennedy is a right winger by trade, he is penciled in on the left. That will allow Malkin to work on the right, which he prefers, even though Bylsma said he's willing to play either side.

"I actually prefer [Malkin] playing the right side and [Kennedy] playing the left in those situations," Bylsma said. "Given the way we play and some of the details we want in our game, it's not a bad thing to be on your off-side, so that's the way that line will look."

He offered those thoughts to a small group of local reporters, because HBO cameras no longer are stalking the Penguins, and no one is collecting information for NBC's Winter Classic telecast.

It was just like old times. And the Penguins didn't seem to object.

"It was fun," left winger Mike Rupp said. "I would love to do it again, from the Classic to the television cameras from HBO. But at the same time, it's a bit of a relief that they're gone, because we can do the thing that we're used to doing all the time.

"We don't have to worry about guys [wearing a microphone] for games. In the back of your mind, it's always there: 'OK, something might be on me right now.' I think it's going to be a bit of a relief."

Let's hope they come back rested and ready to roll for the 2nd half. We need Sid to stay Sid, Jordan back is huge, I believe the deciding factor is Geno. He needs to be Geno of 2 years ago for us to win the cup. Play like a $8 million superstar not like a $3 million forward. I think he is healthy again, motivated and will shine.

:lol::lol: You got love it..4 of the top 6 vote getters are Pens! Way to go Pens fans...give everyone else another reason to bitch about us!:lol:

What do you think of the format for the game? Pick 2 captains and they draft a team. I think it's friggin awesome, who wouldn't love to be a Captain, just like pick up games when we were kids. All Allstar games are a joke anyhow, props to the HNL for being creative with it!

The 14 million-plus votes have been counted, and the fans have picked the first six All-Stars selected for the 2011 All-Star Game presented by Discover.

Forwards Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews and Evgeni Malkin; defensemen Kris Letang and Duncan Keith; and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury are the first players guaranteed spots in the 42-player pool for the NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft powered by Cisco, which will see the All-Stars themselves pick the teams that will take the ice Jan. 30 at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.

The event, which will be televised on Friday, Jan. 28, on Versus in the U.S. and TSN in Canada, will be held at NHL Fan Fair at the Raleigh Convention Center.

Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins center, set the pace as the overall vote leader with 633,509 votes. It's a spot well-earned as he leads the League with 32 goals and 65 points, and his 25-game point-scoring streak earlier this season was the longest since Mats Sundin's 30-game streak in the 1992-93 season.

"It's really nice. To have everyone share that is pretty special. You don't see that happen very often," Crosby said of four Penguins players making the first six. "We're all really excited. We appreciate all the support we get. That says a lot about our fans."

Oh yeah!!!!! :cope:

The Penguins' record for fastest goal to start a game is 6 seconds by Jean Pronovost in 1976.

Pittsburgh hadn't scored five goals in the first period since beating Washington 7-3 on Dec. 26, 1990, according to STATS LLC.

I know they tied a playoff record last year against either senators or canadiens.

It seems like hockey is beginning to devolve back to the clutching and grabbing that was prevalent back before the lockout...hopefully bylsma can come up with a better strategy to beat these trap teams,so far we haven't looked too good against them lately...tonight reminded me of the montreal playoff series from last year...expect more teams to resort to this style of play against the pens until they prove they can beat it consistantly

The entire team is dead space without Sid. I know he's a superstar and all that, but it's not good to let the team revolve around one player so much. They better find a way to start winning and get in the swing of things again. They're like 1 for the last 6 or 7.

I can be optimistic; however, I am not naive. That is like playing a game against the Browns with Roethlisberger, Mendenhall, and Polamalu sitting on the sideline. Sure, you have a fighting chance, but it is not surprising to lose if you do. That's the way I look at it.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced Sidney Crosby will not play in the 2011 All-Star Game presented by Discover due to the concussion that has sidelined him for nearly three weeks.

"Sidney is making progress in his recovery but still is not completely symptom-free," Penguins General Manager Ray Shero said. "The Penguins organization has decided that he will not attend the NHL All-Star Weekend and instead will continue to relax and recuperate in the hopes of returning to our lineup soon.

"I know Sidney is very honored to have been selected by the fans to appear in the All-Star Game, and he was happy to attend the festivities two years ago when he couldn't play because of a knee injury. However, in this situation -- when he has not even skated for 2 1/2 weeks and still has not been cleared to resume physical activity -- we think it's best for him to focus totally on his recovery.

"I spoke with Brendan Shanahan of the NHL office and informed him of our decision. Brendan was very understanding and offered Sidney his best wishes for a quick return to the lineup."

Crosby, who was the leading vote-getter in fan balloting for the All-Star Game, will miss his ninth straight game Tuesday when the Penguins host the New York Islanders. He has not been cleared to resume physical activity and there's no timeline set for his return to action.

He suffered the injury when he was hit into the boards by the Tampa Bay Lightning's Victor Hedman during a game on Jan. 5.

PITTSBURGH -- The injury news just keeps getting worse for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Sidney Crosby is out with a concussion. His return date is unknown. Mark Letestu has a meniscus injury. He's out four to six weeks.

Now, Evgeni Malkin -- who had just returned from a five-game absence -- has joined the list. And from the looks of it, he won't be getting off it anytime soon.

According to coach Dan Bylsma, Malkin -- the All-Star center who has 15 goals and 22 assists this season -- has two torn ligaments in his right knee, and it's not clear if he'll need surgery.

Malkin was injured during Friday night's 3-2 home win over the Buffalo Sabres. He had an MRI exam Saturday, which showed the tears to both the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments. Bylsma said treatment options are being discussed.

"You're talking about Evgeni Malkin and the quality of player that he is. He's a guy that's won a scoring title and a Conn Smythe," Bylsma said. "We were anticipating getting him back in the lineup and healthy back in the lineup. This is a difficult injury for him."

Malkin nursed a knee problem as well as a sinus infection in the latest absence, which included him skipping All-Star Weekend in Raleigh, N.C. But he practiced with the team this week and managed three shots vs. the Sabres.

However, he had just 6 minutes, 3 seconds of playing time before colliding with Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers in the second period.

"It was kind of a fluke situation going into the boards with a guy," Bylsma said. "That's a tough injury for Geno. We have dealt with games without him. We've managed to find our way without him. That's what we're going to have to look at now."

So, the Penguins indeed will journey on without their top two stars. Crosby is not even with the team this weekend, as he's visiting his parents. He has missed 12 games.

"I don't have a timeline [for Crosby's return]," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said. "I know he's feeling better. Until he's symptom-free, there's not much we can say. The good news is that there's plenty of time for him to come back and make a contribution this season. But, at this point, we just don't know when he'll be back."

Through it all, though, Pittsburgh continues to win games and maintain its place in the Atlantic Division. The Penguins have won five in a row, including all three since the All-Star break. With 72 points, they were just one point behind the first-place Philadelphia Flyers as play began Saturday.

That said, clearly the Penguins were building momentum as they prepared to be at full strength. Now, that appears unlikely.

"It really was the second part of the contact that made the hit. That was two guys kind of going into the boards on their own that happened to land on each other, which caused the hit," Bylsma said. "I don't think at the point of injury that Myers had any intent of even making contact with anybody."

Malkin is in his fifth year in the NHL and has had at least 70 points in his first four. He has two 100-point seasons and scored a career-high 47 goals in 2007-08.

Pittsburgh plays the Washington Capitals Sunday.

Cooke Suspended 4 Games
Matt Cooke suspended four games for his hit from behind on Fedor Tyutin
Tags: NHL, Pittsburgh Penguins, Columbus Blue Jackets, Fedor Tyutin, SportsCenter, Matthew Barnaby, SportsCenter, SuspensionCooke Suspended 4 Games
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke has received a four-game suspension for his hit from behind on Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Fedor Tyutin on Tuesday, the NHL announced Wednesday.

Cooke was issued a five-minute major for charging for his hit on Tyutin, which sent him face-first into the glass.

Cooke also was handed a five-minute major for fighting, as was Columbus center Derick Brassard, who went after Cooke after the hit. Tyutin stayed in the game.

The Penguins, who lost 4-1, contended Tyutin had glanced over his shoulder before playing the puck behind his net.

"It was the worst hit I've ever had from behind," Tyutin said, according to the Columbus Dispatch. "I wasn't surprised, not when you see [Cooke] in the highlights all the time for dirty hits."

Tyutin knew the hit was coming and looked Cooke "right in the eyes," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said, according to the Post-Gazette.

"It used to be you were responsible for yourself if you turned, but that's not the way anymore," Cooke said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "That call's been called on us four or five times this year. It's the same thing.

"He turns and looks and sees me coming. The other defenseman is slowing me down, so I'm not skating full speed," he said.

Although the four-game suspension was for the hit on Tyutin, Cooke was at the center of another questionable hit earlier in the week.

On Sunday, late in the third period of the Penguins' nationally televised loss at Washington, Cooke made knee-on-knee contact with Capitals star Alex Ovechkin. Cooke was given two minutes for tripping on the play.

Neither Ovechkin nor teammate Nicklas Backstrom, who both charged at Cooke and landed punches, were assessed penalties for their response to the hit.

Bylsma also defended Cooke Sunday for the hit on Ovechkin. But Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau wasn't buying it.

"It's Matt Cooke. Need we say more?" Boudreau said Sunday.

"It's not like it's his first rodeo. He's done it to everybody. And then he goes to the ref and says 'What did I do?' He knows what he did. There's no doubt in my mind. He's good at it."

Cooke's blindside hit on Marc Savard knocked the Boston Bruins center out of action with a Grade 2 concussion last season.

Although Savard returned for the playoffs, he missed the first 23 games of this season with post-concussion syndrome. He has been ruled out for the season after sustaining another concussion last month.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Penguins enforcer Eric Godard likely is facing a 10-game suspension.

Godard appeared to leave the bench to intervene when he saw New York Islanders tough guy Micheal Haley charge up the ice toward Penguins goalie Brent Johnson during the third period of the Islanders' 9-3 victory at Nassau Coliseum Friday night.

Rule 70.10 mandates that the first player leaving the bench during an altercation, or with the intent of starting an altercation, shall be suspended without pay for the next 10 games.

Also, coach Dan Bylsma is suspended automatically, pending a review by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. He can be fined a maximum of $10,000.

Godard was assessed a double game misconduct and a double roughing minor after his run-in with Haley.

By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- There were 351 penalty minutes assessed at Nassau Coliseum Friday night.

For a while, it seemed like the New York Islanders might score that many goals.

Ultimately, the Islanders only defeated the Penguins, 9-3, but New York's margin of victory certainly seemed larger.

Not quite as high as the number of players ejected from the game, though. Eleven received game misconducts, and numerous others left early because of sundry other offenses.

There also were 16 fighting majors.

The Islanders had entered the game looking to avenge a couple of teammates -- goalie Rick DiPietro and forward Blake Comeau -- injured in a 3-0 loss at Consol Energy Center nine nights earlier, and had to feel satisfied that they succeeded.

"We knew coming in here it would be a chippy game," Penguins goalie Brent Johnson said. "Things just got carried away."

Not only did the Islanders injure left winger Eric Tangradi, who got a possible concussion on a third-period hit by New York's Trevor Gillies, and torch the Penguins for the most goals as they have allowed since Nov. 8, 2003, but the Islanders repeatedly tried to punish their primary targets, Johnson and forward Max Talbot.

Johnson had one-punched DiPietro in the waning seconds of that Feb. 2 game, inflicting facial fractures that will prevent DiPietro from playing for a month or so, while Talbot had given Comeau a concussion with what the Islanders considered to be a cheap shot.

New York not only scored seven goals on Johnson, but minor league tough guy Micheal Haley skated the length of the ice to get at him in the third period. Unfortunately for Haley, Penguins enforcer Eric Godard arrived at Johnson's side at pretty much the same time, so all Haley got to show for his trouble was an early exit from the game.

If Haley happens to still be in the NHL when the teams meet again in the next to the last game of the regular season, the Penguins figure to look for a little vengeance of their own.

"A guy who would challenge the goalie, that's kind of a cheap move," Penguins defenseman Kris Letang said. "We're going to play our game [April 8], but there will be consequences."

Talbot, meanwhile, had been attacked at center ice by winger Matt Martin in the second period, which triggered a brawl that resulted in six players being ejected, although Talbot didn't seem particularly damaged afterward.

Along with everything else, the Penguins got a scare in the waning seconds of the first period, when Letang was slashed on the right foot by New York center John Tavares, and was in obvious pain as he hobbled off the ice.

"I was going back to the front of the net, and I got a two-hander," Letang said. "That's the only think I remember ... I couldn't feel my foot at the beginning."

For a team already missing so much top-end talent, the thought of losing its finest defenseman in a game against an opponent that couldn't see a playoff spot with the Hubble telescope had to be positively chilling.

Letang returned for the start of the second period, however, and showed no major effects of the whack he had taken, which means that not quite everything was a disaster for the Penguins.

Just that pretty much everything else was. Like how the Penguins were humiliated by allowing nine to a team that, before this game, had not generated a single goal against them in 164 minutes, 26 seconds.

Of course, scores can be misleading, and that probably was the case with this one. Fact is, what the Islanders did to the Penguins was far more embarrassing than their margin of victory might suggest.

About the only consolation for the Penguins was that they were humiliated in relative privacy because the game drew a crowd of just 12,888.

New York went in front to stay at 8:51 of the opening period, when defenseman Travis Hamonic beat Johnson from above the right circle. Before the period ended, Jesse Joensuu (12:52), P.A. Parenteau (17:48) and Michael Grabner (19:12) put pucks behind Johnson.

Thus began a game the Penguins won't easily forget.

Trouble is, they have to do it before they face the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden Sunday afternoon.

They said it was a mild concussion, but that's obviously not the case or they are just being overly protective. Makes me wonder if he had a more substantial concussion, or something with a disc in his cervical spine.

It's possible but I'd say it very unlikely we miss the playoffs. We are 14 points ahead with about 20 games to go. We'd have to lose, lose and lose again. I don't see that happening with Flower, defense and the young motivated guys. We won't beat the likes of the Flyers and Caps, and probably won't win a playoff series, but we'll most likely make the playoffs.

By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

DENVER -- The NHL trade deadline is less than two weeks away and, no, Penguins general manager Ray Shero doesn't expect to be just an interested onlooker between now and then.

That doesn't mean he is poised to make a personnel move anytime soon.

"Not unless it's a call-up from Wilkes-Barre," he said, laughing. "I'm good at those."

Shero should be, with all the practice he has had in the past few weeks.

But bringing up guys from the American Hockey League is a short-term response to injury problems. A trade before the Feb. 28 deadline would have longer-lasting implications, especially if Shero doesn't settle for adding "rental" players whose contracts expire after this season.

"Everything you do, you have to keep in mind how that's going to affect us moving forward," he said Wednesday.

At this point, he seems willing to consider deals that would bring in guys who are on the cusp of free agency as well as those for players with time left on their contracts.

It is unlikely either will happen until he can get a complete read on the market, and that isn't possible yet.

"There aren't a lot of guys who are selling players [yet], so it's not like players are getting thrown at me, left and right," he said. "I have an idea of what I want to do and what price I might want to pay -- and not overpay, obviously.

"I have a decent idea [of who might be available] from talking to a number of the teams. For some teams, it's still a little early to decide if they're going to make a move with somebody "

The Penguins' primary target is believed to be a goal-scoring winger, although the idea of pursuing a center to fill in for Evgeni Malkin, out for the season after knee surgery, apparently hasn't been ruled out.

Shero would neither identify the players in whom he is interested nor reveal how many there are.

"We can have some names [to target], but if teams don't want to move [that individual] ... I'm sure teams would like Jordan Staal, but he's not getting traded," he said.

The Cooke factor
Penguins left winger Matt Cooke completed his four-game suspension Wednesday night.

Suffice to say, it won't be a tough call for coach Dan Bylsma to add him to the lineup Sunday when the Penguins visit Chicago.

Cooke is a valuable member of the Penguins' highly effective penalty-killing unit, which had allowed five goals in the previous two games before they faced Colorado Wednesday night at the Pepsi Center.

He also is an effective forechecker who can make life miserable for opponents with his speed and physical play.

"He's a tough guy to play against," Bylsma said. "He's a physical guy. He's also a guy who can play the game in the offensive zone. He can make plays and can add offensively. That makes it more aggravating to play against him, I think, because he can be used on our power play and in front of the net."

Cooke was suspended for a hit from behind on Columbus defenseman Fedor Tyutin Feb. 8.

High-scoring Duchene out
Colorado entered its game against the Penguins on an eight-game losing streak, and a bad situation for the Avalanche got a lot worse Wednesday morning, when it was announced that forward Matt Duchene will be out indefinitely because of a hand injury.

Duchene leads Colorado in goals (21), points (47) and shots (141), and was chosen to play in the All-Star Game last month.

"It's just something we have to deal with," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said. "Every team goes through these situations. We'd never use it as an excuse.

"It has an impact on our club, no question. All the injuries have an impact on our club. But we don't feel sorry for ourselves. No one else certainly will."

No big change in Crosby
There doesn't seem to be any significant change in Sidney Crosby's status.

Bylsma confirmed Wednesday that Crosby still is in the "light workouts" phase of his recovery from a concussion that has prevented him from playing since Jan. 5.

"He needs to be symptom-free," Bylsma said, adding that "he's not getting checked out every day."

Once he clears this hurdle, Crosby will have to get through more rigorous off-ice workouts without experiencing symptoms before receiving clearance to practice. He then will have to get through on-ice sessions without symptoms before he will be allowed to play.

More on Forsberg
Peter Forsberg aborted his final comeback attempt Monday, when he announced his retirement after appearing in two games with the Avalanche over the weekend.

Forsberg's attempt to resurrect his career at age 37 generated a lot of attention, and Sacco suggested there was no downside to having him around.

"It was a good experience for a lot of our younger players to have him around," he said. "Peter was very professional when he was here for the short amount of time we had him.

"He didn't want to come in and be a distraction, and he was not that. He was the farthest thing from that."

Penguins defenseman Alex Goligoski never faced Forsberg in a game and seemed a bit disappointed that it wasn't possible Wednesday night.

"He's a guy I grew up watching," Goligoski said. "He was kind of in his prime when I saw him play. He was unbelievable, so it would have been pretty cool to play against him."

Teammate Pascal Dupuis, however, did it a number of times, and saw enough of Forsberg to be grateful that he didn't have to do it again.

"I played plenty against him," Dupuis said. "He's a good player, hard to play against, so I'm kind of glad we don't have to play against him."

Avalanche reeling
Colorado lost three of its final four games before the all-star break in late January, but figured the time off would allow it to regroup for a surge through the final two months of the regular season.

It hasn't worked out that way.

The Avalanche lost its first seven games after the break, putting it in a 1-10 skid before facing the Penguins.

"Coming off the all-star break, we had pretty high hopes for the stretch run," defenseman Matt Hunwick said. "We just haven't been able to get on track, and things started to snowball and confidence starts to run a little low.

"It's been tough, but we're trying to stay positive and get that first win and get ourselves back on track."

Weather reports
The high temperature in Denver flirted with 70 Wednesday, and no one seemed to complain about it.

Not after how cold it has been for much of the winter in Western Pennsylvania.

Perhaps surprisingly, defenseman Zbynek Michalek, who spent the previous five winters in Phoenix, said recently that he doesn't mind the conditions he has experienced over the past few months.

"I actually like winter, like the snow," he said. "I hadn't experienced it for a few years, but it's like back home when I was growing up. It reminds me of those times. It's fun."

He enjoys the Penguins' travel schedule, too. They flew across two time zones to take on the Avalanche, but such trips are a rarity.

When he was with the Coyotes, Michalek played intra-conference games in four time zones. With the Penguins, he can be in his own bed three or four hours after most road games end.

"It's such a big difference," he said. "I feel like I'm home all the time. I feel like we play almost all home games. It's so much easier on your body, and my wife is happier, too, because I'm home more often.

"It's definitely a big difference. My brother [Milan] went from San Jose to Ottawa, and he told me the same thing. I was like, 'Yeah, whatever.' But now I see it."

I haven't seen any updates on Crosby. I am beginning to feel like he is out for the rest of the season, or maybe could come back if this team somehow made it to the finals, kind of like Smith for the Steelers.

One thing's for sure: I would love to see the NHL change this whole injury secrecy thing and require injuries to be divulged instead of leaving everyone guessing. If he's done, he's done. Quit keeping our hopes up.

It's going on 2 months and Sid is still experiencing concussion like symptoms. That's a little strange. The hit did not even look that hard. If he still feeling it this mustn't have been his first concussion or their is something seriously wrong with him.

It is an awesome deal. Shero crushed that trade. The no no no was for the fact that we're losing yet another one of our starters, and a solid defensemen at that, right before a game with the Caps. Niskanen is ok but he really isn't nearly as solid as Gogo.

Share With the NHL’s trade deadline just one week away, the Penguins pulled the trigger on a move Monday afternoon that helped bolster the team’s depth at winger and added a skilled defenseman in a deal that strengthens the team today and in the long term.

The Penguins acquired two young studs in power forward James Neal and offensively-gifted blueliner Matt Niskanen from the Dallas Stars for Alex Goligoski. Both players are expected to arrive in Pittsburgh late Monday and be at practice on Tuesday.

“For both sides, for them getting a puck-moving guy and us getting a power forward and defenseman, it made sense for both teams,” general manager Ray Shero said.

“If I was ever going to (make this deal) it had to be for the right forward. I think we’ve found that in (Neal), a young, up-and-coming winger. His best days are ahead of him.

“Getting Matt Niskanen in the deal was important to us. … It’s hard to get defensemen at this time of year. We’re looking forward to having Matt join us. He’s a young guy, only 24 years old. He’s had some pretty good years so far in the NHL.”

Neal, 23, has scored 20-plus goals in all three of his NHL seasons. The 6-foot-2, 208-pound winger is a rare blend of skill and power. Acquiring a player like Neal was too hard for Shero to pass on.

“There aren’t many of these young, power guys in the game,” he said. “Neal on our list is one of the better ones in the game. He’s got some room to grow.

“This is really the first young winger that we’ve gone out and gotten. Chris Kunitz was 27 or 28 when we got him. Neal, being just 23, this is the hockey trade that we’ve been looking for. I think this will be a good fit for him in the long run. … We have a pretty good forward group now.”

Niskanen, 24, is in his fourth NHL season. The former first-round pick (28th overall by Dallas in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft) has played 277 career games. His best season was his rookie campaign in 2007-08 when he posted 26 points (7G-19A) and a plus-22 rating. He followed that up with six goals and 35 points in his second year.

“He started off at 20, 21 years old in the league,” Shero said. “He had good years offensively and was a plus player. … He’s a right-hand shot that can play the left side, which he may have to do here. He’s a guy that can play second unit on the power play, or first if he has to. He can shoot the puck. He can kill penalties.”

Niskanen’s numbers have fallen in the past two seasons, however, he still possesses great talent and skill. The Penguins believe they can hone his skills and help him improve his game.

“The thing with Matt, a change might be good for him," Shero said. "That’s what I’m hoping. We have a good coaching staff here and pretty positive people We’re all U.S. guys so good for Matt. Hopefully, he can get back to where he was earlier in his career and help us out.”

Despite the speculation regarding the impact of Sidney Crosby’s health influencing the Penguins’ deals, Shero stated that this trade was made regardless of Crosby’s situation.

“This was a deal I would have done in the summer time and I’d do now to get Neal and Niskanen,” Shero said.

“The Crosby question, it’s the unknown. I’m looking to add different different pieces to this hockey team, short term and long term - Niskanen and Neal in this case being long term. … Based upon Sid, it’s hard to make that determination because I really don’t know. A lot of this depends on what we’re looking to give up.”

With the deadline still seven days away, the Penguins might not be done dealing yet. If Shero can find another trade to make his team better, there’s no doubt he’ll make it happen.

“Cap-wise we are still in decent shape. We have some room to continue looking at pieces that will help us,” Shero said. “We’ll see what happens between now and 3 o’clock on Monday. There’s a ways to go. We’ll let the dust settle a little bit and get together with our coaches and scouts over the next couple days, work on it and see if we can get better.”

In the meantime, the Penguins know that they’ve acquired two young, quality players that will help now and in the future.

“I believe this is a good hockey deal for us,” Shero said. “This is not just for this year, but moving forward the next few years adding these players. I read a couple times that we’re looking for a wing. This is a step in the right direction. This is a deal that makes sense for us in the short term and the long term.”

I'm not disappointed at all. This defense, particularly Michalek, has impressed me quite a bit this season. We all know Orpik is a stud, but Letang has been putting up some serious points while improving defensively, Michalek is like having a second goaltender at times, and Martin, lauded for his offensive ability, has completely surprised me as a true two-way defenseman. Between these four and guys like Engelland and Lovejoy, I am very confident in the defense. After researching Niskanen, I question whether or not he will contribute to this team; it looks like he was moved from Dallas to help them with the cap.

Offensively, this team just can't put it in the net. Staal is the only dangerous player on the ice right now. If Neal comes in and plays as well as he can, this team's offensive capabilities just went up. Couple that with the possible return of guys like Kunitz, Asham, and Letestu, and I really start liking their chances.

If Neal comes in and plays as well as he can, this team's offensive capabilities just went up. Couple that with the possible return of guys like Kunitz, Asham, and Letestu, and I really start liking their chances.

True true true. This team, even with all the injuries, is real solid besides the fact that they can't score...which is pretty important.

Could you imagine last year's offense with this year's defense?

Shero goes and makes all the moves this team needs to make a run at the cup and everyone gets injured. Thank God just about everyone will be here next year!

Could you imagine this year's offense with this year's defense, sans the injuries? It would be insanity.

It looked like it was going to be Godly for a while, and then the team **** the bed on the injury front.

Who knows, maybe the team gets healthy right before the playoffs and gets hot.

Hockey is no different than most sports. Offense sells tickets defense wins championships. They are learning to play D, even more so with the lineup that is in there now. This will only help them in the playoffs this year and next year when we get Geno back.

Me too. Niskanen will be paired with Engelland . Neal will be on the top line with Staal and Dupuis.

No Versus?

How about Justin.tv?

Worst case scenario you can log on to NHL.com and watch the live feed for about two minutes at a time there with their center ice preview. Just exit your browser and delete your browsing history/cookies and do it again. I've done this for about 20 games this season.

Alright boys. Let's score a goal in the 3rd and get out of this with 2 points. No OT, no shootout. Do it now.
