I'm not a Steelers fan (please don't kill me!) but I thought you guys might enjoy this story: I was eating brunch this morning in Shadyside when in walked Mike Tomlin with his family. They sat at the booth right behind mine. Tomlin got a call on his cell phone during brunch from someone named Kevin. He started talking about Al Woods, a Saints draft pick from LSU, how he had been cut by the Saints, how he's a massive guy, and asked what it would take to get him. He seemed pretty excited about it. So, I'd look out for Al Woods landing with the Steelers sometime.

Thought you guys might find this interesting, it was a pretty cool conversation to eavesdrop on!

The Kevin you are referring to is Kevin Colbert, director of football operations.
Great story, thanks for sharing it with us!

He's just an athletic machine who needs a lot of coaching. I would be in no way against signing him. He could be a monster 5-tech...

This is possibly why we sent both Harris and Worthington to the PS. Question is who expendable if we do pick him up?

Yeah, if Ktrain likes him, then i'll get on the bandwagon....as long as i'm near the rear.

I googled him to see if he had been claimed by anyone and came across several posts indicating that the Steelers had claimed him. The following post is from a Saints forum:

"no official confirmation yet but per his facebook and numerous twitters he has been claimed of the waivers by the Steelers. No word has been given about if Woods had cleared the waivers would he have made our PS."

NFL Draft 2010: The New Orleans Saints Select Al Woods, DT, LSU
by Dave Cariello on Apr 24, 2010 10:53 AM CDT in 2010 NFL Draft 30 comments

Finally! The Saints address one of their top two needs in this years draft by selecting defensive tackle Al Woods from LSU. Trading their 4th round pick and later 6th round pick to the Cardinals, the Saints were able to move up seven spots and grab they guy they really want.

The Saints now only have one 7th round pick left in this years draft. Pay attention though, because the team has been known to trade next years picks to get back into this years action.

This is probably my favorite pick by the Saints in this years draft, though that's not saying much with some of the more...unique...picks the team has made thus far. Woods is obviously not an outside linebacker, the position I think the Saints need to address most, but he definitely provides help at the Saints other area of need. The trade the Saints pulled to acquire Woods, however, leaves them handcuffed for the rest of the draft. Is "trade down" even in the Saints draft vocabulary?

Why would they release him???

Woods was a fourth-round draft pick of the Saints in April out of LSU. The rookie defensive tackle played in all four preseason games, making four tackles and recovering a fumble.

NO practice squad

New Orleans Saints: QB Sean Canfield, FB Matt Klap, WR Montez Billings, G Roger Allen, G Brandon Carter, LB Harry Coleman, DT DeMario Pressley, CB Reggie Jones

He is not on the roster or ir or pup so where is he??

Weird, hes definitely an exciting physical specimen and everything I've read on him has been positive, but it leads to the question why was he released? It seems strange especially for a team that doesn't really have stud dt's. Just a scheme thing, or is there some unknown with this guy?

schematically hes limited to a 34 imo, he would make a good backup nose right now i think and after he tightens up his game a bit hes definitely a perfect canidate for a 34end

the steelers had another player a few years back that had awesome physical attributes and athletic prowess but very little football experience after a few years of indepth coaching out came a pro bowl offensive lineman namely carleton haselrig... Too bad this story doesn't have a good ending just when he was coming into his own the demons took over and ended his career... who knows this guy could be good under the right coaching... the steelers have taken shots on guys with less talent before

The Steelers are making a change to their practice squad today. They are signing rookie defensive tackle Al Woods and releasing rookie defensive end Doug Worthington, their seventh-round pick. Woods was a fourth-round draft choice of the New Orleans Saints from LSU, the 123rd pick in the draft. The Saints traded away a sixth-round pick and their fourth-rounder to Arizona to move up seven spots in the fourth round to take him.
He’s listed as 6-4, 314.

Its unfortunate for Worthington, but great for Woods and us. Great to add some talented youth. I read that we are tied for the second oldest team in the NFL.

heres a blib from NO last April

"A lot of times when you draft a guy locally you've got to make sure they're grounded because they've got a lot of family members who are fans and can be a distractions," Elias said. "Al is so grounded and so focused, it's a perfect fit because of what he does on the field and the maturity he has off the field.

"He just loves the whole community, the team and the city. His best football days are ahead of him. He's very, very excited and very emotional about it. He loved Coach Johnson when they worked him out. He's ready to go to work."

I think I would have kept Worthington,Woods has a hard time keeping his head in the game . Maybe if he keeps his weight down and looks at this as a new start it will work out.

The Saints dumped him and it appears we're the only team to show interest, that's a red flag to me.

yeah worthington was the most questionable cut they could have made...but its not that big of a deal at the same time, id rather have woods

 after all that was hyped about him pre-draft, what IS the reason the Saints didn't invest more effort and time in him?

Because he's not an UT in a 4-3. To utilize his skill set he needs to be the 5-tech in a 3-4. he's a much better run stuffer than pass rusher. He's a monster athlete though for his size. I could definitely see him making the 53 next season.
