Battle sets up visits with Steelers, Seahawks

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 5, 2010 12:46 PM ET
We've always considered Arnaz Battle the destitute man's Hines Ward. He could wind up playing behind the real thing.

The long-time 49ers receiver has visits scheduled with the Steelers and Seahawks, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

Battle can help on special teams and as a third receiver, although we're a little surprised Seattle wants to add more age to their wideout group.

It's even harder to see where Battle fits in Pittsburgh, with Ward, Santonio Holmes, and Mike Wallace are entrenched atop the depth chart. The team's interest doesn't speak well for Limas Sweed's status with the team.

This is either big smoke screen to try and scare Sweed into some how producing or the writing is on the wall and Sweed won't it out of training camp in a Steeler uniform. Normally one would think they would give him 1 more chance but considering how poorly he played and the fact that he didn't even finish the season on the active roster, I'm thinking he's done.

Just got the text from the official site..

http://www.steelers.com/news/article-1/Steelers-Sign-Battle-and-Allen/001821dc-1b04-45d9-845e-2ac015939811

The Steelers signed a pair of unrestricted free agents, wide receiver Arnaz Battle and safety Will Allen, to their roster today. Financial terms of the three-year deals were not disclosed.
Battle (6-1, 208) was originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers (http://www.sf49ers.com/) in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. He spent seven seasons with the 49ers and played in 88 career games as a wide receiver, kick returner and punt returner. For his career, Battle has 178 receptions for 2,150 yards and 11 touchdowns as a receiver. In 2009, he was the 49ers primary punt returner with 21 returns for 61 yards and added three kickoff returns for 68 yards.
Allen (6-1, 200) has played all six NFL seasons with Tampa Bay after being drafted by the Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. Allen made two starts in 2009 before being placed on the team’s Reserve/Injured List following Week 9. In his six seasons with the Buccaneers, Allen had 63 special teams tackles and was named the team’s special teams captain in 2008. He started 26 games in six years and had 174 career tackles and four interceptions.

This would strongly indicate that we've seen the end of the whole Limas Sweed experiment..or disaster as it were.

Battle...... what a waste. Don't we have enough 30+ veterens on this team?

Considering how bad Sweed was; this guy will be the 4th WR. Sweed will be gone and then they'll grab another one in the draft and use Tyler Grisham to round out the WR corp for 2010.

and he's got his own website; actually a pretty cool at that.

If you ever hoped that we'd have free agent signings like those teams then you must be drinking or really living in that dream world

This is typical Steeler offseason moves, nothing we should be surprised about at all. Our WR corp was the best in the AFCN, so there was no need to upgrade that position that much. Ward, Holmes, and Wallace are the starters and by far the best trio in the division, no question. This is just a depth and ST signing and a reason to get rid of Sweed.

LMFAO! When you look at it in that light... its pretty comical! Really i think he is here for ST's and WR depth. I think they still retain Sweed as the 4th -or- 5th and make him battle Battle for a depth chart spot/playing time! With Miller, Ward, Holmes and Wallace as our 4WR set... i could care less who our #4 and #5 wrs are.

Why would we regret it? We have Wallace, Holmes, Ward and of course Heath Miller. Even if Sweed does pan out we don't need him.

With Battle (for ST) and Randle El to play slot... Looks like Sweed dropped his last pass as a Steeler!

who cares....lol our offense was not the issue last year. Our Deffense and special teams was the problem. A good 4th reciever doesnt matter.
