CORAOPOLIS, Pa. (AP) -- Leo Anthony Nobile, a former Pittsburgh Steelers player who almost drowned in a mud puddle during a game in the 1940s, has died at 84.

Nobile, who lived in Moon Township, died Tuesday, according to Copeland's Funeral Home. The cause of death was kidney failure, his family said.

His daughter, Natalie Nobile-Shoop, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that her father's brush with death occurred on a rainy day at Forbes Field during either the 1948 or 1949 season. Nobile, a lineman who played both offense and defense, wound up face down in a puddle under a pile of players.

"It was the only time my grandparents watched him play pro ball," Nobile-Shoop said. "They carried him off the field because he almost drowned."

Nobile played for the Washington Redskins in 1947 before joining the Steelers for two seasons.

After leaving the NFL, Nobile worked as a sales manager for a cutlery firm. He later worked as director of activities at a state prison, where Nobile organized a prison team named the Pittsburgh Stealers.

Nobile served as president of the Steelers' alumni association, said Steelers chairman Dan Rooney.
