Running backs Carey Davis and rookie Isaac Redman, linebacker Bruce Davis and veteran cornerback Anthony Madison were among the players cut today by Coach Mike Tomlin as the Steelers began reducing their roster to the 53-man limit. Also among the 22 players who were waived is former Penn State center A.Q. Shipley, a Moon High School graduate and one of the team's seventh-round draft choices. Shipely said he was told the Steelers will try to sign him to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Capizzi was the surprise for me .... I thought for sure he made the team this year.

Among others ..........

C A. Q. Shipley
T Jason Capizzi
FB Carey Davis
RB Isaac Redman
DT Scott Paxson
CB Anthony Madison
K Piotr Czech
LB Tom Korte
LB Andrew Schantz
QB Mike Reilly
LB Bruce Davis
RB Justin Vincent

i think johnson will be a great blocker for us no matter where he lines up.

i was pretty accurate saying shipley, redman, harris would get cut among the rookies, i still think summers is garbage though....there were a few guys like madison, c.davis, and b.davis that were kind of surprises to me, but not real big losses by any means

Tomlin just said the same exact thing at his press conference that he is not comfortable at all with the current group of backup o-line man. And they will definitely search the waiver wire for a veteran o-lineman that got cut. Tomlin didnot want to reveal all of the cuts because he doesnt want anybody to take any of his players with 24 hours still left to make all of the cuts. Tomlin was great as always at his press conference with the things he said. He said pretty boldly when asked who is running back is he said a few times that Willie Parker is and not Rashard Mendenhall...

hes thin for a tackle though, he might have been stronger but being so lanky people get up under him and use alot of leverage and hes got heavy feet.

trust me i had high hopes for hills, and came away very disappointed but hes lighter on his feet and a little stockier, im sure that was the difference.

Steelers make final cuts
Friday, September 04, 2009

Running backs Carey Davis and rookie Isaac Redman, linebacker Bruce Davis and veteran cornerback Anthony Madison were among the players cut today by Coach Mike Tomlin as the Steelers began reducing their roster to the 53-man limit.

Also among the 22 players who were waived is former Penn State center A.Q. Shipley, a Moon High School graduate and one of the team's seventh-round draft choices. Shipely said he was told the Steelers will try to sign him to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Shipley is the one of two draft choices who didn't make the 53-man roster. The other is defensive end Sonny Harris, a seventh-round pick who was also cut.

Carey Davis, who started 11 of the 34 games in which he appeared the past two seasons, was waived injured by the team. He did not play in last night's 21-10 preseason victory in Carolina.

Bruce Davis was a third-round draft choice in 2008 from UCLA, where he had 25 1/2 sacks in his last two years as a defensive end.

Among other cuts were defensive tackle Scott Paxson, who was on the 53-man roster last season.

That was from the post gazette. Not sure who they were but some told us we better learn to like Carey Davis because he was a lock. Not so fast! This is one cut that I am happy about. Carey Davis was often tackled by his own shadow. Most of his plays where he touched the ball resulted in negative yards. Good riddance. As for Isaac Redman my guess is he will wind up on our practice squad if nobody claims him. :2cents:

Has anyone seen a complete list?

No doubt...I hope David Johnson gets the majority of the snaps at fullback. he's a hell of a blocker and definitely an upgrade over Carey Davis, Sean McHugh and Frank Summers. Maybe BA will actually decide to use a full back as a lead blocker more often this season. It would really help Willie and Rashard.

The fact that he cut Carey Davis shows me that he knows Davis is nothing more then a scrub and is not just going to keep him around for the hell of it like Cowher did with a lot of guys namely Ricardo Colclough comes to mind. That's the difference between Tomlin and Cowher.

when a player is waived it means they are under contract, theres a waiver order of the other 31 teams and they all have a chance to claim that player off waivers, but by doing so they pickup their current contract.

example when deangelo hall was waived by the raiders no one picked him up even though there were teams interested...this was because the raiders signed him to a $70 million deal...once he cleared waivers the raiders are still responsible for that guaranteed money but another team could sign him as a FA deal...so now he has a contract with the redskins for alot of money but al davis still has to pay him the guaranteed money in his raider contract

that is an extreme case....no one really dips into waivers for scrub players unless they are really high on them or they are desperate

but to actually go on the practice squad they need to clear waivers

I think Redman did get robbed as well and I dont know what more he could have done during preseason to make the team. He did everything that was asked of him facing the odds he was facing to make the 53 man roster. While Redman did look very good in preseason I still think people are getting a little too worked up over Redman being cut. This team still has 3 solid backs in Parker,Moore, and Mendenhall who are all capable of getting the job done I believe when their number is called. Redman looks like he has talent and was a good find but the way fans are reacting on some of these boards and on talk shows you would have thought the Steelers just cut Walter Payton or Emmitt Smith or something.

steelcityrockers
09-04-2009, 09:43 PM
Ok, I called AQ Shipley getting cut the second I heard the pick. Beyond that is a bunch of people who a balls, although I thought Bruce Davis would get one more year. Regarding the lack of depth at OT, I am hereby advocating the signing of Damion McIntosh who was cut by the Chiefs. He can play either tackle and has started 100 odd games. Not great, but good back up

Iron City South
09-04-2009, 10:27 PM
The fact that Tomlin unloaded Bruce Davis tells me nobody is a sacred cow just because they are a high-round draft pick. You either make the 2nd year turn .... or you don't.

I saw the Davis cut coming a mile away. The dude looked lost out there and there was no way he was every going to fit into a 3-4 scheme.

Redman will be back on the PS if he gets passed waivers. No doubt in my mind he's going to get a shot eventually with Willie Parker's glass legs.

Redman is going through the same thing Marcus Mason did last preseason with the Redskins (different roles, but similar situation).

I dont get why people think Parker is always injured....over the past four seasons he has only played in less than 15 games once, that being lasst year. I guess it's the most recent memory people have about him so they asssume he is always hurt. He is probably one of the more durable RB's in the league.

:yesno:

No one is going to beat him with a lead pipe. I just don't get how people think Willie is fragile. People dawg him for not having a certain pedigree, but his four year stretch as a starter is almost comparable to any four years Bettis had, and when Bettis was in his prime he was running behind a behemoth of an offensive line.

I dont think FWP belongs in the HoF, but I do think Steeler fans dawg him b/c of his stature, and for the fact that he doesnt catch well out of the backfield (he can run a hell of a screen though).

Maybe if you boy Mendenhall (who seems to be the fragile one so far) can live up to his first round pedigree, they can take a little of the load off of Willie and keep his legs fresh and we will see him break some big runs against tired defenses.

If Redman would make this team better I would be all for him making the team, but the fact is he ran against 3rd stringers all pre-season, and against our D in practice.....practice.....I said practice.

That's a pretty good comparison there.

I'll go on record saying Redman will be a 1,000 yard rusher for some NFL team, some day. He looks like a young Priest Holmes. His talent is so evident. I get paid to evaluate potential pro talent, and he has it.
