Holmes likely to return punts

Despite two more fumbles on special teams last week, rookie wide receiver Santonio Holmes might be back as a punt-returner against the Saints, Cowher said.

Holmes fumbled a kickoff that led to the Broncos' second touchdown, then also fumbled while returning a punt. That fumble was recovered by McFadden. Holmes, who has five fumbles on his past 16 touches on kick returns, was yanked from the return units after the second fumble.

"I'm leaning toward Santonio getting back out there," Cowher said.

Cowher indicated he will probably not use Holmes on kick returns.

This situation is alot different than Ike Taylors. Ike has been pretty solid all year with the exception of the Atlanta and Denver game but Santonio has been struggling all year long. I don't care who we have back there but keep Santonio out !!!!!

Why in the hell would he do this?

This entire season is a mystery Dan, nothing should surprise us anymore. Im guessing it either because he wants to see if the kid can work through his issues since we're thin return men and the season is lost anyways so why not ? or he's just having yet another brain drain of coaching decisions again. :nonod:

what does it matter??? he's only lost 2 fumbles, we make it seem like he loses fumbles everytime he touches the ball, at this point there's no one better to return, and i'm sure he's just gonna fair catch everything now

Exactly, why not put him back there, atleast he doesnt fumble !

we don't know that, it can just be an all around thing with the players since cowher doesn't correct ****, i bet they don't even practice speical teams anymore

Davenport hasn't fumbled yet and has done well returning so give him the ball!

keyword, yet.......y'all are being to hard on holmes, he's only lost 2 fumbles this year.....and it's not like we have anyone better......well until reid gets healthy we don't....we might as well just fair catch every punt

Steelersfan
11-10-2006, 04:19 AM
Biased?......LMAO! The kid is just lucky he doesn't have 10 fumbles! You want someone back there that has shown they fumble all the time over someone you think "might"? wth!

Koopa
11-10-2006, 04:27 AM
no, i just rather keep losing and get a badass draft pick then pointlessly bring up the hopes of everyone and then crush them by not making the playoffs and not getting a good draft pick to build for our future.......and i said leave holmes in there and just fair catch everything. i don't want him running it

Steelersfan

OK, fine then. When was the last time we got a badass draft pick in the first round? Big Ben? Edwards? Plexiglass?
So Ben is probably the best of them. Even he has had trouble this year. Draft picks are no sure thing.

This circus is about to get worse with Holmes back in the saddle. Goodness. I could just close my eyes and shake my head over this crazy forsaken season of failures.

I can't take Holmes returning punts, it's very hard on my health and gets my blood preassure sky rocketing! The dude scares me back there primarily because he has been bailed out by his teammates recovering his fumbles!

Maybe Cowher is trying to give the FO a reason to let him go! ;)

BlitzburghRockCity

It's bad enough we're holding our breath everytime Ben throws a pass these days but now we're back to worrying how close the opposition will get the ball at our goal line if Holmes fumbles again !

I just don't get this whole damn year at all !

Our damn year is on life support and I think by the time this season is over, we all will be in the hospital recovering.

I was looking forward to Holmes not returning anymore punts or kickoffs because I could personally use the time to catch my breath! Practically the entire game I am holding my breath...

when Ben drops back to pass
when Holmes is returning a punt or kickoff
when the opponents QB drops back to pass
anytime a Steeler is running down field with the ball in hand!

You see... I'm holding my breath a lot during the game and about the only time I can breathe is when the opponent hands the ball off or during a TV timeout!!!

BlitzburghRockCity

Ktrain has it, Troy was the best 1st round pick in the Cowher era IMO. He and Ben that is.

Steelersfan
11-10-2006, 06:59 PM
You almost always get at least a decent player in the 1st round. Whatever happened to us getting great players in the rounds after that though? Some of our best players over the past 10 years have been in the 2nd or 3rd rounds until the past few drafts.

Koopa
11-10-2006, 07:03 PM
the reason we get decent 1st rounders is cause we draft so high every year, this year we have a chance to get a great 1st rounder on the defensive side of the ball.......i think we are pretty much set on offense if we can resign dookie, and on special teams i wouldn't mind drafting another speedster in the 3rd round again to help reid out in the kick offs.....we just need to work on defense, casue i'm sure porter is gone

House of Steel
11-10-2006, 07:10 PM
Well we got Harrison as Joey's replacement. We really do need to address at CB, OL, DL, ILB in the draft, otherwise, we are set, oh yeah, we need a special team specialist for sure. I wonder who is on the Free Agent Market after the season ends.

Well cowher really took a chance on troy...safetys are tough to draft high. He wasnt used at all at USC like he is here, and this risk paid off big time...now we got to lock his *** up in pittsburgh forever...cant let a guy like that go.

We dont get great defensive players in the late rounds anymore because now that more teams use the 3-4 they grab those guys up pretty quick, those undersized, more athletic guys that is.

Our draft this year we need LB...Porter is probably out (which is a shame) and Farrior is getting up in years.

We dont need Oline unless we can get some stud center.

Corner isnt a big issue....Ike will be fine regardless of the recent slump and i really think Mcfadden is gonna be something special.

Safety...im really impressed with Clark...the guy hits like a freight train...and Smith is another one i think is gonna be great.

ST...Chidi was great to have on ST, mabey in a later round we could get a guy like that. (who the hell is madison, he was great on special teams against denver).

Alot of mocks have us taking a RB...Michael Bush (who i think is great) and Kenny Irons (who i also like), but i think we'll keep Najeh and Parker has been great (when we actually try to run the ball). We are set at WR.

Is Paul Posluszny a 3-4 OLB? The Steelers always find small athletic DE in college and convert them into 3-4 OLB when they draft them. When you look from Greg Lloyd, Chad Brown, Jason Gildon, Joey Porter and Clark Haggans. All of them played DE in college and then moved OLB when drafted. So I'm sure the Steelers will continue to do that.

The Steelers should draft a top OT in this upcoming draft or try to find a Richard Seymour type DE. I think that would be the best move.

who's to say we'll be a 3-4 next year, new coach could mean new everything....i hope not i just hope cowher gets fired, i wouldn't let him walk off, i'd embarrase him lol

Paul P would probably play ILB i think. But your right we would take a guy like Manny Lawson (who i wanted) who played DE in college. Or the Giants guy...Mathais Kiwanuka would be another one of those type players.

So, since we are only halfway through this season, I'll try to steer the discussion back that way.

Santonio should not be returning punts. He's fumbled 5 times this season, and has been lucky to only lose two of them. I think the best option here would be to put Hines Ward back there. He's tough enough to take a hit, has had experience as a returner, and we all know he can catch and hold onto the ball. Even if all he is going to do is fair catch it, at least we actually get the ball.

And I'm with AZ, I can use all of the chances I can to breathe. I hold my breath in all the same instances he does

I agree Holmes shouldn't be returning punts but I don't like the idea of putting our best WR back there to do it. I'd like to see some young guys step up to do it but we don't have many options. Davenport has clearly been the best one returning this year.

No way in hell is Ward put back there to return punts/kicks unless we absolutely have nobody left and then I'd put Casey back there before Ward. The man is our best WR, and literally one of the best players on the team. As much as returners get clobbered, clipped, smacked around, tripped up and everything else I dont want Ward back there getting twisted up in a pile of 300 lb wedge busters.

You got to look at what Ward brings to the table. He is the clear number 1 reciever. You do not want your number one reciever hurt returning kicks.

Defeated Lynn Swann picked up by Steelers as a kick returner

Former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Lynn Swann may have been soundly defeated in tuesday's Pennsylvania gubernatorial election, but the Hall of Famer quickly found a new job – as a kick return specialist for his former team.
“I was pretty down in the dumps tuesday night, but then Bill Cowher called,” said Swann, “and asked me if I’d be interested in becoming a Steeler again. I thought at first he meant as a coach or something, but he wants me to return kicks.”
Cowher said he is fully aware that Swann is now 54 years old, but says the Steelers have run out of options.
“I’m just looking for someone who can field a punt of kickoff without immediately tossing it to the ground,” said the Steelers coach. “I realize Swann isn’t going to be a threat to take it in for a touchdown, but I don’t care about that right now. He had some of the best hands in NFL history, and that’s all we need right now. If he can just cleanly field a punt and then fall forward for two yards, it will be our best return of the year and give us a much better shot to win a football game.”
