View Full Version : Making sigs

OK, I have Photoshop CS and when I get home from work tonight I want to try and make a sig for the first time but I need a little help.

1 - Where do I start making a background? I like the clear, clean looking sigs more than the grunge ones. I assume I make a new image say 500x150 or whatever. But where to go from there?

2 - Where do you get pics? I know there are places with some already cut.

3 - How do you cut pics if/when I need to?

Guess that will do for starters. Thanks for any help!

I don't have Photoshop or make any sigs so I can't help with that but I know of this site which has a ton of PSD cuts:

I dont use photoshop, but I find most of my pics online by doing a google or yahoo search, checking out steelers.com or post-gazette.com/steelers if Im making a steelers one.

Normally when I want to cut out a pic I resize it down to where i think it will look right on the sig, then I erase everything but the actual part of the picture I want to use.

First off, 400X125 is the best size to use for a sig. I actually do them 400X110. Start of by making your background, every new thing you do put into a new layer. As far as the picture goes, you can copy and paste them. Just find a pic, right click on it and click copy. Go back into photshop and select Layer>New Layer, then EDIT>Paste. Then selct EDIT>transform>scale to make the pic the right size. Then create a new layer and selct Layer>fill>solid color. Make it black and put it behind your pic then use the eraser to cut out the pic. When you are done cutting out the pic you can do away with the solid black layer. Hope this helps. good luck.

You can click edit>transform>scale then size them down.

BR7
10-31-2006, 01:51 AM
edit -> transform -> scale

Hold shift while dragging to the size you need to constrain proportions.

If you don't see the 'boundry' enter like 50% for height and 50% for width (just so you can see the boundry), then scale to how you need via dragging the box.

OK, so here is my first sig ever!
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/5144/untitled2ew9.jpg

I still have a few questions if anyone can answer them.

1 - How do I create a border?
2 - How do I add some color to the background?
3 - I know the font sucks. I just threw that in there.

Thanks for everyone that gave me some tips to start out. I did cut that pic myself and thought it came out pretty well for my first time....lol

Any comments? Suggestions? Would love to here anything that could make it better.

1. Border... cick edit -> select all, then on the layers palette, click the add new layer. Then go to edit -> stroke. From there you can get the color you want, and the pixel size (1 usually looks best) and set it to 'inside.' Then click edit -> deselect or ctrl + D to unselect. If you use black, you wont see it until you view it in your browser, PS uses a border around the canvas by default and sometimes it looks like you don't have one there.

2. Get ahold of some brushes (deviant art .com). Use a gradient on the bottom most layer or a solid color, then add a layer (mess with the blending mode, ie. overlay, linear light, etc) and use your new found brushes. Don't go too crazy with the second layer, just keep adding layers one at a time and play with the blending mode w/brushes. Also some decent patterns/gradients work wonders as well. You can also set your foreground/background colors to black/yellow (for example) and go to filter -> render -> clouds. If you don't like that, just hit CTRL + F to get a different variation, don't like that one, hit it again and again until you get an effect you like.

3. dafont.com

Also, don't forget to cut out the inside of the facemask ;) Don't get used to the eraser tool as your means of cutting. Better start to learn the pen tool. Even some 'stock' images will make your BG look good. So just look for different ****, obscure **** and blend that into your BG, overlay some brushing and viola.

For your first one that is very nice. Good work. The face mask needs a little editing and a border would be good.

The hardest part is the text. That will come with time though.

For the size, the [ ] are short cuts for changing the size of any brush. If you open the brush preset picker (the dialog box where you can change brush 'types,') you can change the diameter by entering a number or moving the slider.

Photoshop Pen Tool Tutorial

Alrighty, here's my tut on cutting. This could possibly ruin my site, lol, cause 90% of that requires cutting. So for starters, I'll use a simple image (http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_misc/pen1.jpg) and cut that.

First thing is to get your tool settings. So click the pen tool on the tool pallette window.

http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_misc/pen2.jpg
------------------------------------

Then on top, make your settings look like these.

http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_misc/pen3.jpg
------------------------------------

Now the fun part :sarcasm:. Zoom in to 700% and I'm gonna start on the right side of his hat. So click in that spot.

http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_misc/pen4.jpg

Continue around the image clicking points around the image you want cut. Try to get the "point" on the players edge, not that fine line between the player and the background or when your finsihed, you will have a 1 to 2 pixel outline around it. Don't spend too much time on the hair, I'll show you how to fix that after its cut, so avoid the hair by clicking points about 5 px away from it (on the BG).

If and when you are clicking anchor points along the player and you mess one up you dont have to click undo or ctrl+alt+z, you can use the arrow keys to move it where you want it. Also, if there is a curved part, you can click a point then hold and release, then click again to make a curved part.

So when you clicked anchor points around the entire thing.. heres mine before the final point 'completes' the path.

http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_misc/pen5.jpg

Complete the path by clicking the last anchor point on the first one. You will see a "o" when you mouse over it. Once you complete the path, right click and choose "make selection." In that dialog box, make sure the feather radius is 0 and anti-aliased is checked, then click OK. Now you have an 'almost' cropped image (the damn hair). With the marquee around your path, hit CTRL + C (copies) then CTRL + N (new window with dimensions set to the clipboard which you copied in the previous step, click enter) and finally CTRL + V to paste.

------------------------------------

Should look similar to this...

http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_misc/pen6.jpg

------------------------------------

Now for the hair.

You can use the pen tool for this as well, but the result will be 'sharp' lines when they should be some what 'fuzzy.'

Click the eraser tool, then click the 'brush preset picker (circled in black).

http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_misc/pen7.jpg

The trick is to choose the brush with some 'fuzziness.' If you window doesn't show the brushes like that, click the arrow on the top right of that box and choose 'large thumbnails.' If you look at brush #28 (towards the bottom), thats the 'type' we need... scroll down a bit more and there should be a big one, like #65. Choose that one and move the master diameter slider to 4 px. Start erasing the BG around the hair. You will see where you need to be to erase the bg and leave hair. Zoom back in to the original size and see how it looks. If more needs to be erased, zoom back to 500% and erase more. This tool takes some 'touch' and practice.

Here's my 'almost' final on a white BG

http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_misc/pen8.jpg

I hate that little border that shows around the jersey and part of the top of the hat, so I will erase that with the eraser (not the fuzzy one, the solid one.)

so heres the final final with color correction/hue correction etc. which will be a later tut :)

http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_misc/pen9.jpg

For Images w/Facemasks

I always cut the inside the mask last. So I do all the above first and when the cut image is in the new document, I do all the final tweaking (like that little black border that was around the image) and the facemask.

I'll use an image of Reed that was cut already, and make it look like the inside needs to be cut.

http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_misc/pen10.jpg

Start wherever you want, but this time when you close the path, just move on to the next part you need to cut. Repeat until all the areas are done.

http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_misc/pen11.jpg

Once you have all the areas 'pen'd in', now you can right click, choose make selection (all the same as above), 0 feather radius, anti-alaised checked, then ok. All the pen'd areas are now in a marquee, just hit backspace on the keyboard or edit -> clear to remove it. Then CTRL + D to de-select.

http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_misc/pen13.jpg

End result...

He looks 'dingy' too. I'll post later if I don't fall asleep on how to do the color fix. Peezy looks squashed too, or is it just me? Remember to hold shift when resizing or it wont stay in proportion.

Try using the blur like on these walls (http://www.eacustomcovers.com/_walls/7.jpg)... duplicate your player (so you have two of them, one on top of the other), then on the bottom player layer, go to filter -> blur -> motion blur and make it 0 angle, 40 distance. I think I used a distance of 50 on the walls, sigs you might want to do less.

To dupe the layer, either right click and choose duplicate layer or drag that layer onto the 'create new layer' button.

So basically, the effect is behind the main pic, which you don't want to distract from all that much.

That effect is also on my sig below.

BlitzburghRockCity
11-02-2006, 11:51 AM
HOS, when using PSP like we do, and you want to make the player cut out more clearly..using the eraser at a medium size width to get as close as you can; its ok at that if the background blurs onto the player... then select the layer you have as the player and use a smaller size eraser, and get rid of the blur. that gives you a good effect of cutting out the player.

my current sig was done a different way so it looks a tad bit blurred because I was trying a different approach but if you look at alot of my other ones, they come out pretty well using that method.
