NEW YORK -- Linebacker James Harrison, the best player on the NFL's best defense, won The Associated Press 2008 Defensive Player of the Year award.

The announcement was made Monday.

Harrison, whose career-high 16 sacks set a team record, also led the NFL with a career-high seven forced fumbles. He beat Dallas' DeMarcus Ware in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcaster. Pittsburgh's latest version of the Steel Curtain was the league's stingiest in total defense, pass defense and points allowed.

Harrison earned 22 votes to 13 for Ware.

the 2008 Defensive Player of the Year - James Harrison, beating out DeMarcus Ware 20 votes to 13. Very deserving, and no other player changed as many games as this guy.

Silverback is 'Da man!

Some may disagree with letting J Peazy walk, but consider this .... if he hadn't ...... Harrison's potential would never have been realized.

I was one of the people that really wanted to see Porter stay on but I also knew that Tomlin's personality probably wouldn't be a suitable match for Porter like Cowher's was.

I've been a Harrison fan watching him in NFLE and then when he finally made the team for good I knew he could be something special but he was hurt for awhile and playing behind Porter and Haggans he didn't really get the chance but once he got it you just knew this guy was going to be awesome. Congrats to Silverback, it's a well deserved honor!

I thought Ed Reed might take this award again. He also had a great season.

Just goes to show you the talent we've had at the LB position in the past few years to have a guy like Harrison as a back up..He's played lights out ever since he cracked the starting line-up,now he's the face of the Steelers defense and alot of credit goes to the rest of our D who stepped up this year.Woodley has made him that much better. :yellowthumb::tt02::tt02::tt02::tt02::tt02:

:321::bigfinger::321: ----->To "A-Hole" Baltimore HC John "Hairball"....just seen him on Sportscenter and he came short of Whineing that Ed Reed didn't win the DPOY.
He said that Ed Reed should have won the award and was more deserving.

Harrison rocks. I'm proud of him, and he deserves this big time. Should have had the sack record too, but the league has an issue with calling holding on my boy. 24 quarters no holding calls against him...really????

Congratulations Silverback!!!!!

Harrison is the fifth Steelers player to win the award, including three Hall of Famers from the original Steel Curtain: Joe Greene (1974), Mel Blount (1975) and Lambert (1976). In 1993, Rod Woodson was AP Defensive Player of the Year.

Baltimore safety Ed Reed (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5910/;_ylt=AiWVe6bhWNU7jbrGIYKX_4EdsLYF), the 2004 winner, got eight votes. Tennessee defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5901/;_ylt=AqEhZVBQK6Ll5xpUgn_RItEdsLYF) had five and Harrison’s teammate, safety Troy Polamalu (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6352/;_ylt=ApGWkL4.LC0PWhAjS70JsagdsLYF), got two.

“It couldn’t happen to a better guy,” Steelers veteran receiver Hines Ward (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4323/;_ylt=AmYJc2rcu2lMDDt1J3ypZpkdsLYF) said. “He’s worked his tail off to get to where he is. You appreciate it more, considering where he came from and how he got here.”
