"According to the source, Lerner was not pleased when former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher spurned his advances and so he is prepared to make what was described as a “huge” financial offer to Pioli that would include not only millions, but more importantly full control of the organization and the funds necessary to bring in Pioli’s first choice as head coach, Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz".

This just screams of sheer desperation for the Browns!!
Scott Pioli would be a solid hire but to bring in a half baked Big 10 coach like Kirk Ferentz
who is mediocre at best is beyond mind boggling.

You would think Lerner would have learned about college coaches in the NFL ala Nick Saban and Bobby Petrino most recently.

What an Idiot Organization.

Im with you guys on this. I like the Pioli hire, but I have McKay from Atlanta as my number 1 preference. As for coaching, my top 3 are Shanahan, Mangini, Schwarz from Tenn. Ferentz shoulda came years ago when his stock was higher. Im not not saying he would be a bad hire, but he isnt what we need. I heard there was a Thursday deadline on Pioli too, but we will see.

Pioli, and Shanahan would be a good hire for them.

They are reporting that Pioli has already said no. And Shanahan would be better off sitting down, and collecting the 20M

well pioli doesnt set the world on fire for me. i think he would be solid, but he has on;y been with belichick and who knows if its him or pioli. like i said, id like mckay. i think then he gets us an experianced head coach instead of a college guy or coordinator. i could see shanahan taking a year off. especially since this was a surprising move.

Where did you read that Pioli said no?

ESPN, mentioned today that he had said no, once Cleveland told him that they had to know today. They also mentioned that the Chiefs may be the front runner in hiring him!

I also just read this, the browns backed off there stance.

Patriots Vice President Scott Pioli is not on a deadline to give the Browns an answer Thursday on their general manager job, a league source with knowledge of the negotiations told the Plain Dealer Thursday. The Boston Herald reported late Wednesday that the Browns parted ways with Pioli on Wednesday with no agreement in place, but with a mandate to make his decision by Thursday.
The source told the Plain Dealer that no timeframe was placed on the decision. Pioli intends to go through with his interview with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Browns still plan to interview Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay -- if they don't have a deal in place with Pioli.

Atlanta is also showing interest, but they cant interview until out of the playoiffs
