After he'd handed out 1,000 Thanksgiving (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/arts-culture/history/thanksgiving-EVFES000169.topic) turkeys in his old Collier City neighborhood last year, Pittsburgh Steelers (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/sports/pittsburgh-steelers-ORSPT000055.topic) free safety Tyrone Carter (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/sports/tyrone-carter-PESPT001148.topic) saw people leave empty-handed. "I felt that I let a lot of people down, elderly ladies," Carter said.

For today's 2 p.m. giveaway, the Blanche Ely High School grad will pass out 2,000 free turkeys with wife April and their four children at McNair Park.

Carter knows what it is to want more. He recalled childhood holidays when his family didn't have the traditional table full of food.

Though Thanksgiving equals football for many, he's leaving his black-and-gold NFL (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/sports/football/national-football-league-ORSPT000007.topic) jersey at home."I don't do this for the hype," said Carter, who paid for the birds. "I'm just like one of them. That's the main thing."

What a nice thing to do!

Yeah, thats cool. I think most players should dothat kind of thing around the holidays. They have the money. Or the league can take all the money they rake in off fines for late hits on QB, and use it for that.

My niece was on Good Morning America serving her platoon a Thankgiving feast. That was a nice surprise...Didn't think I would see her for the holidays....lol

What a great show of humanity. It's good to see that they don't forget where they came from.

Nice but people don't only get hungry on turkey day, what about the rest of the year?

The Steelers and every NFL team does things for the community all year around; working with the United Way as well as tons of local community charities for food drives, coats for kids, toys for tots, etc.

Props to Carter for doing something for the folks in his old neighborhood.
