PITTSBURGH (AP)—If the Cincinnati Bengals are seeking retribution for his hit that broke linebacker Keith Rivers’ jaw last month, Hines Ward said they know where to find him Thursday night.

Revenge factor or not, the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver expects it will be the Bengals—as usual—that end up getting the worst of the AFC North matchup physically.

“I always keep my head on a swivel,” Ward said Tuesday. “It’s football. … Their heads should be on a swivel.”

Some Bengals players hinted at payback after Ward’s block ended Rivers’ season during Pittsburgh’s 38-10 victory on Oct. 19. Rivers, who can’t oppose Ward again until next season, said, “You reap what you sow. What goes around comes around.”

The Bengals ramped down such talk Tuesday, no doubt trying to prevent any distractions during a short work week before a rivalry game.

“It’s all part of the game. Injuries happen,” linebacker Brandon Johnson said. “The only thing I have now is just the passion for the rivalry. Getting a win is my incentive. I’ll see him. If he’s standing between me and a W, that’s my incentive.”

Ward developed the reputation of being an uncommonly physical blocker for a receiver early in his 11-season career and has kept it, and players around the league—not just those in Cincinnati—dislike him.

Disliking him is one thing, Ward said, but calling him dirty is unfair.

“To label me as dirty or a cheap shot, if you’re worrying about a little 200-pounder, a 32-year-old wide receiver, I take that as a compliment,” Ward said.

Following the Steelers’ 11-10 victory Sunday over San Diego, Ward said some Chargers players told him they stayed away from his territory to avoid the risk of injury.

“I’m not going to change because of the threat somebody is going to get me back,” Ward said. “Every game, there’s somebody trying to get me. I’ll apologize for the guy being out the whole year, Rivers, but there’s nothing I can do about it. I’m not going to apologize for the way I play this game. Nobody’s going to apologize to me if I get knocked out going over the middle.”

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis issued no such apology after ending Steelers rookie running back Rashard Mendenhall’s season by causing a severe shoulder injury, Ward said.

Ward was blocking on a pass reception by tight end Matt Spaeth when he leveled Rivers, who was coming from a different angle in pursuit of the play.

NFL vice president Ray Anderson said during a visit to Pittsburgh last month that the rules regarding hits like Ward’s might be reviewed.

“I continue seeing those blocks, they’ve been going on the entire age of football,” Ward said. “There’s nothing cheap about it. … If I really was trying to hurt Rivers, I would have gone low on him and tried to take out his knee.”

To Ward, his biggest worry with the Bengals (1-8-1) is they will be playing the Steelers (7-3) with little time for preparation after only three days off, not whether they’re targeting him.

“They don’t have anything to lose. They’ll go for it on fourth-and-3, fourth-and-2. They’ll do the trick plays,” Ward said. “They’ll blitz the house.”

Ward is coming off his two best games of the season, making 11 catches for 124 yards against San Diego and eight for 112 yards against Indianapolis. Still, he remains confused about several of his three holding calls against the Chargers.

On one play, Ward said, the referee complimented him for a good block, while another official said he made the officials look bad by acting as if he were holding before releasing the opposing player.

The holding calls, among 115 yards in Pittsburgh penalties, were part of the reason the Steelers were held without a touchdown despite outgaining San Diego 410-213.

“I’m frustrated. I’m trying not to get called for holding. I’m to the point where you’re scared even to put your hands on somebody because you don’t know if you’re going to get a holding call,” Ward said.

During the Bengals quest for revenge let's hope they keep it clean as Ward did when he broke Rivers' jaw! :D

lol. I just posted a section of this article over in the other section dealing with the articles.

It bothers me what the officials said to Ward during one of his blocks. Telling him that he's making them look bad. I'm sorry... To me it's the officials making the officials look bad.

As for Cincinatti going after Ward? I have no doubt they will. They can't get into the playoffs even if they wanted to now. It would be very Bengals like to try and take out a rival's key player. Look for them to try and hurt Ben also.

Everytime we play someone that Ward puts a big hit on, usually an AFCN team, they always yap and talk like it's some big deal but nobody pays any attention to it much less Ward himself. The dude has seen it all and done it all in every type of game situation so useless chatter from other players makes no difference. :blah:

lol.. I'd love to see Ward hit Douche-man-zadah to where his extremely bulbus head came off with his helmet. We need Hines to play a few plays at SS..

That would be sweet....I hate TJ Humpshismama......But Anthony Smith did jack up TJ a few years ago........Since the Steelers will be winning this game in a blow out....Just put Anthony Smith in a SS and let him jack up TJ again....Plus Mucho Stinko.........

As for the Bengals seeking revenge on Ward....The Bengals don't have one player with the stones to seek revenge on Ward......So Ward has no reason to be worried....lol
