PITTSBURGH ó The Steelers added depth and experience to their defensive backfield today when they signed 10-year veteran cornerback Fernando Bryant to a one-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not released.

Bryant (5-10, 175), was originally selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round (26th overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft. He played five years with the Jaguars (1999-03) and four years with the Detroit Lions (2004-07) before signing with the New England Patriots as a free agent on March 20, 2008. Bryant spent the preseason with New England before being released on Aug. 30.

Bryant has made 109 starts in 110 games played during nine NFL seasons. He has recorded 509 tackles (435 solo), seven interceptions, defended 88 passes and recovered seven fumbles.

Bryant will wear uniform No. 31 for the Steelers.

The Steelers made room on their roster for Bryant by releasing rookie linebacker Donovan Woods. Woods originally signed with the Steelers as an undrafted rookie free agent and made the teamís original 53-man roster. He was released on Oct. 25, but re-signed with the teamís active roster on Nov. 8.

Good pickup I think. He shouldn't get #31. Numbers such as this shouldn't be given out to just anybody.

There are only so many numbers....you can't retire every damn number that a player in the 70's wore....I say give them all out...78, 75, 12, 32.....all of them...who cares who wore them?

My only question is can he catch the ball?? How many times are we going to have to watch the steelers CBs drop easy catchable INTs?

All except #58, of course!:nono:

Bryant is a good pick up. Must be there for McFadden?

Mike Logan wore #31 more recently

... relax about using all the old steeler numbers, if they retired them all there wouldnt be any left :)

So who starts Gay or Bryant?

Let them share some time.. Gay have been somewhat solid, and Bryant needs to learn the schemes.. Steelers defence is not an easy unit to join and step into in the middle of the season..

Donnie Shell Carnell Lake

when was lake #31? wasnt he always #37?

anyways, I kinda like this signing...he was a solid CB at Alabama, although the SEC at the time wasn't a super pass-happy conference.

All of the "pedigree lovers" here should be drooling over the fact that he was a 1st round draft pick.....I guess Ike will be riding the pine now since he was drafted in the 4th....lol

This is a good move for the team, with McFadden not back yet and Townsend likely out we found a gem in this could that can really help us. I like William Gay's potential but he's not there yet and Anthony Madison is mainly a special teamer who was thrust into action last week when Townsend went down.

My only question is can he catch the ball?? How many times are we going to have to watch the steelers CBs drop easy catchable INTs?I doubt it he has bred a reputation as a guy who losses track of the ball at times.

Why not a run at Ty Law?? I know it's too late now, but unless I missed an article we didn't even give a call.

Sounds good, it can't hurt given the injuries we've had with the cb's. When does McFadden come back from the broken arm? And how long are they saying Townsend will be out with the hammy? Is it a serious tear?

Man has this unit had it's share of injuries this season or what. Now we have Gay starting opposite Ike Taylor (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08320/928171-66.stm) and Anthony Madison starting at Nickel back in place of Gay who normally replaces Deshea who was replacing McFadden when he got hurt.

Rivers has 21 TD's this year so our top ranked pass defense is in for a potentially long day tomorrow if the pass rush doesn't generate pressure and help th em out. We need Harrison, Woodley and all the guys to get sacks and pressures on Rivers and just as importantly shut down Tomlinson. If he gets going that's will open up the passing game even more. Polamalu will have to put his TV stardom with LT aside for tomorrow and make alot of plays for us, LOL.

Rivers will be testing William Gay early and often you can bet on that so Lebeau better have the zone blitz in high gear. If we can get to Rivers we'll have a real good chance of taking this game but if we ever needed backup guys to continue to step up it's now.

The depth of the Secondary is going to be tested without a doubt this Sunday... The face of the Chargers offense has changed dramatically is taking matters to the air instead of the ground. Top rated pass D vs. top rated pass O... should be a good show even if the secondary is banged up!

With the signing of Bryant this will help us get through till Townsend and McFadden get back. At this point if we can start getting healthy we will find ourselves with a pretty potent secondary down the stretch that will really help us. That is if we can get on a hot streak and stay competitive.

Gay is starting today right? I'm guessing they wouldn't want to start someone like right after they sign him.
