Sounds good to me; at this point neither Culpepper or Leftwich inspire any kind of confidence in you but atleast we went out and got a veteran QB who atleast has a clue of how to react to the speed of the game and knows how to play the position.

This will take the pressure off Dixon again and allow him to continue his learning curve at a more desirable pace like the original plan was.

I dont have a problem with this signing at all. The Steelers just could not afford to go into the season with Dixon as their number 2 QB and possible starter if Ben would happen to go down at some point. If anything Leftwich should look at this as a tremendous opportunity to play on one of the better teams in the AFC that has a chance to go far in the playoffs, and get his career which has been like a yo-yo over the last few years back on track. Hopefully he will thrive on that and god forbid if Ben would go down to an injury he would be ready to step in and get the job done if need be. Who knows maybe he can even help the Steelers figure out a way of how to beat the Jags which they have had so much trouble doing over the last 2-3 years.

:plus1: Nailed it, thats the one most important factor imo of his signing.

Absolutely it is, and you gotta think that he still has some bitter feelings toward that organization and how he got let go over Garrard last season. I am sure he would be thrilled to be able to give the Steelers some insight on what they can possibly do to beat the Jags since both the Steelers team as a whole, and Leftwich himself have a lot of payback due to the Jags for what happened last season.

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh Steelers (http://www.steeleraddicts.com/teams/pittsburghsteelers/profile?team=PIT) signed veteran quarterback Byron Leftwich to a one-year deal on Sunday, choosing the former Jacksonville Jaguars (http://www.steeleraddicts.com/teams/jacksonvillejaguars/profile?team=JAC) starter over Daunte Culpepper, a three-time Pro Bowl player.
The Steelers signed the 28-year-old Leftwich after both he and Culpepper worked out Sunday morning at the team's training camp at Saint Vincent College. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
http://www.steeleraddicts.com/static/content/public/image/getty/headshot/L/E/F/LEF677964.jpg The Steelers were in the market for a backup to Ben Roethlisberger (http://www.steeleraddicts.com/players/benroethlisberger/profile?id=ROE750381) after veteran Charlie Batch (http://www.steeleraddicts.com/players/charliebatch/profile?id=BAT039161) broke his right collarbone in Friday night's 16-10 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles (http://www.steeleraddicts.com/teams/philadelphiaeagles/profile?team=PHI) at Heinz Field. Batch, who is to have surgery Monday, is expected to miss four to six weeks.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Leftwich, who has started 46 career games for Jacksonville and Atlanta, may not be released when Batch returns.
"We're just going to let the play talk," Tomlin said. "You know how we do it. We're going to evaluate what we see based on performance."
Leftwich was released by Atlanta in February and has played in just nine games in the past two seasons because of ankle injuries. A first-round pick by Jacksonville in 2003, he saw action in 15 games that season, making 13 starts. He missed two games in 2004 and five in 2005 with injuries.
A serious ankle injury in 2006 limited him to just six games, opening the door for backup David Garrard (http://www.steeleraddicts.com/players/davidgarrard/profile?id=GAR371604) to get a 10-game audition and win the starting job. Leftwich was released at the end of training camp last year and signed with Atlanta.
The Steelers also signed veteran punter Mitch Berger to a one-year deal on Sunday to compete with Paul Ernster (http://www.steeleraddicts.com/players/paulernster/profile?id=ERN566472). Daniel Sepulveda (http://www.steeleraddicts.com/players/danielsepulveda/profile?id=SEP474618), a fourth-round draft pick in 2007, tore an anterior cruciate ligament and is out for the year.
The 35-year-old Berger is a 12-year veteran with a career average of 43.1 yards on five different teams, including Arizona in 2007.
The Steelers also activated Pro Bowl nose tackle Casey Hampton (http://www.steeleraddicts.com/players/caseyhampton/profile?id=HAM671173) from the physically-unable-to-perform-list, where he had been since failing his conditioning test July 27. To make room for Leftwich and Berger on the roster, the team waived wide receiver Gerran Walker (http://www.steeleraddicts.com/players/gerranwalker/profile?id=WAL179685) and linebacker Anthony Trucks (http://www.steeleraddicts.com/players/anthonytrucks/profile?id=TRU246098).

Well if you take a look at what Tomlin says below here that they might not let Leftwich go when Batch is healthy that basically right there is telling Charlie Batch that his job is not as safe as it may appear.

We have to keep our quota of Mac QBs......Leftwich played in the Mac conference just like Big Ben and Batch.....I don't hate the signing......I think Byron still has something left...I just worry about him being a statue behind our questionable pass protection....

Ya know, the more I was thinking about this after I heard of the signing the more apparent it becomes that if Leftwich does well in the next few weeks they may just release Batch and this way they have a younger, experienced option behind Ben not only for this season but afterwards they would probably have a real good chance to sign him to say a 3 yr deal to be Ben's permanent backup while Dixon comes along.

Honestly would Leftwich want to stay for 3 years to be a backup....I don't think so....

Right now he'd be out of work still if it wasn't for us signing him. Sure he'd probably get picked up before the season started but I can't imagine it would be for anything other than a backup role either. He said in his interview today that he would be happy to play behind Ben and be on a team that has a chance to win it all. Who knows at this point; Batch was most likely going to retire after this season anyways so either way we'll be looking for a backup QB in 2009 most likely.

i think hes come to terms that no one wants him to come in and start...if you werent good enough for atlanta or miami you need to be a backup and show that your worth a damn

Very true......But at the same time he was former first round pick and I'm sure has some pride.....Plus its not like Atlanta was the best situation for a QB to be in last year....I just don't think Leftwich would be content to be a backup for three years....I think if he remains with the Steelers all year then he will test the market next year to find a starters gig....

I just don't understand how a team like the Bears that have complete bums at QB wouldn't at least bring in Leftwich for a chance...

Why was Daunte Culpepper’s name missing from the announcement that the Steelers had signed Byron Leftwich? Apparently Culpepper wants to be more than just a backup: John Clayton of ESPN reports that Culpepper was hoping for a chance to compete for a starting job. The Steelers were impressed with both Culpepper and Leftwich when they worked out at Latrobe Memorial Stadium today, but that Leftwich agreed to sign even though the Steelers gave him no assurances of a roster spot.

see he knows no one wants him to come in and rescue them

Wait, Pep wanted to compete with Ben for a starting gig? LMAO. He really needs to find an agent. His current one blows. His current agent is astoundingly terrible. His current agent is Daunte Culpepper.

Leftwich is definately looking alot thinner, which should be a good thing. He's gonna need to be quick on his feet behind our line, lol..okay i'll stop O-line bashing now. They did look pretty solid for a series or two the other night

I am glad to hear that we have signed Byron. I hope we don't have to ever rely on him to win games for us, but I think he would be a nice backup for Ben. I wouldn't be surprised if we let Charlie go.

Culpepper wanted to compete with Ben for the starting job??????? OMG!!!!!! That is funny!!!! He must be smokin some good stuff.

I hate that he is here. He does not have the stuff for our offense. He makes porr decisions, is injury prone and takes way too long to get rid of the ball. Culpepper is better equiped I think.
Also, if anyone thinks Charlie is going to give up his job, you are nuts! He will come back with a vengence and snatch it back from Lefty.
Besides, if Ben were to go out in week one or two, which is the initial timeline for Batch to return, we would have much bigger problems than if Dixon was number 2. Lefty will not be able to do anything for us.

He usually won't force the ball ala Derek Anderson. Leftwich is more than ok. Probably now one of the better back ups in the league. Culpepper has no accuracy whatsoever and is worse than Leftwich when it comes to decision making. Leftwich A LOT more taleted than Batch. Batch's only saving grace is his mentoring abilities.

:plus1: His decision making is actually pretty good. He has mad heart standing in the pocket til the last second to throw the ball and is pretty accurate. Of course he throws everything 1,000 M.P.H. and he is VERY immobile. (immobility+ balls to stand in the pocket = MASSIVE HITS ie:injuries)

I've always been a big Culpepper fan, but out of the 2 Byron is a better fit for our offense. Dante is a bit careless with the the ball and his accuracy seems to take a few games to get on par. You dont want that in a back-up. Byron looks like he is in good shape and he knows his role is back up to a probowler!

Eveyone always wants a big name FA move, here it is!

He'll be fine. I love the heart that Batch has but we all have to admit, he's been on the decline for the last two years.

I'm all about what gives us the BEST chance to win if the bottom falls out on #7.

I think Leftwich can be a solid back-up in a pinch and I hate to say it but Charlie Batch has been gettting a little brittle the past couple of seasons.

Culpepper is an idiot if he's thinking that he gets a shot at competing to start.....Hey Daunte!!!....why do you think no one has signed your has been *** yet??
What a Jack-***!!

I love the idea that Leftwich can fill in some blanks on the Jags. :cope:

To be honest I'd feel more confident in Byron than Charlie. Byron does have some talent, theres a reason he was a number one pick. He's pretty slow, but thats why he wont be starting, he's got an absolute cannon of an arm though and I think that he could be successful in the right system and be a solid starter(just not with us)

Culpepper can go to hell. He really thinks he will beat out Ben? I ****ing hate that douche

Tomlin said that he expects Leftwich to play thursday night against the Bills; since preseason is all about vanilla offenses now is the perfect time for him to get out there and run as many plays as he can to get a feel for the offense and our players. He'll be up against backups so that will help too.
