Even though Paul Ernster made a solid debut as a punter in the first preseason game, the Steelers have signed another candidate as a possible replacement for injured Daniel Sepulveda -- Mitch Berger, who has played for six different NFL teams in his career.
Berger, 36, punted last season for the Arizona Cardinals, appearing in the final five games and averaging 40.7 yards after sitting out the 2006 season. Before that, he played three seasons with the New Orleans Saints, averaging 44.3 yards in 2003, 43.6 yards in 2004 and 43.2 yards in 2005.
Berger is also known as a kickoff specialist -- a facet Ernster displayed Friday night when his only kickoff traveled 9 yards deep into the end zone. Ernster averaged 42 yards on seven punts against the Philadelphia Eagles.
He can't be any worse than Ernster.....:question-1:

This is what I was hoping would happen; they would bring in a few punters and let them all use the rest of camp and preseason to try out for the job.

Ernster did ok against the Eagles but a couple of those punts from deep in our territory brought back visions of Gardocki's 35 yd punts !

probably because he's a bum and you never know what you're going to get out of him. All i know is 1 kick will be booming and the next will be just 28 yards. Not to mention that he has fumbling issues.

I think the big reason most fans don't want him is the simple fact he let that one punt slip through his when the Steelers played the Browns in the season opener last year.....I'm sure Steelers fans remember that one which was great for us..lol

I have no problem with bringing in another punter for competition.......Might as well look at all the options since really this is just a one season fix.....D-Sep will be back next year...

I agree I think with the way he punted the other night, and with the one kickoff he had in the end zone, and the nice job he did holding for Jeff Reed especially on the 50 yard FG he definitely held his own in the first preseason game. He should most definitely get more of a look the rest of the games this preseason before making a final decision.

Ernster is probably as good an option as you'll find at this point; he's not perfect and he's not someone that I would necessarily want to have as my starting punter for the future but at this point an open competition for the job for the upcoming season is the best way to settle it and find the best option available. Competition breeds excellence and no better way than to let these 2 duke it out for next few weeks.

He did great on that kickoff in the end zone the other night.

Here is Berger's stats:

at 36 years old and based on what he did for the last part of the season in 2007 he's still got some leg left in him so why not bring him in for a tryout.

Bring him in..why not...lol, This has been a crazy camp so far with all these old veterans coming in and out. Tomlin is a man pocessed to get the best possible squad together before the big cuts come in a few weeks. More power to him.:yellowthumb:

Yeah I say let em duke it out. Ernster didn't really impress me too much against Phily. We'll see how he does tonite though.
