View Full Version : Russell Best Goal Line Back???

LATROBE – Steelers coach Mike Tomlin went into Sunday evening’s goal-line session looking for a short-yardage runner.
He’s still looking.

First-round draft pick Rashard Mendenhall was stuffed on three carries by the first-team defense and Tomlin criticized the rookie.

“He’s got to run harder, not over-analyze, understand what that drill’s about. It’s about hitting downhill,” said Tomlin. “Hopefully next time out he’ll be better.”

While Tomlin said he’ll give Willie Parker a chance to be the short-yardage back. But Parker didn't get a chance since Tomlin wanted to take a good look at his prize rookie. But, just like last year, the best short-yardage runner in the goal-line drill was Gary Russell, the undrafted 21-year-old who had only seven carries last season for 21 yards. Russell was stopped by the first-team defense on the third snap of the drill, but his second effort got him close. On the next snap, running behind Justin Hartwig and the rest of the second-team line (against the second-team defense), Russell went right and plowed easily into paydirt.

He’s added 10 pounds to his listed weight of 215, so Russell’s built for the job. He once scored 29 touchdowns as a prep senior in Columbus, Ohio, and was the goal-line runner at the University of Minnesota, where he rushed for 18 touchdowns his last season there.

“I’ve always been bigger than everybody else,” he said. “That’s how I learned to run downhill.”

Tomlin noticed. “He doesn’t overanalyze,” he said of Russell. “He gets his pads down and he finishes downhill. He adds value in that regard.”

It’s one of the reasons Russell made the team as an undrafted rookie last year. Perhaps Tomlin won’t fear his inexperience this year.

With the added 10 pounds, Russell is 5'11 225lbs.
Mendenhall is 5'10 224lbs. So their physiques are very similar.
I don't know how their speed compares to each other but from a power aspect they are close. I would like to see Russell get some more carries this season. We may actually have 3 feature backs in this offense if Russell was given a chance.

Russel was looking great out there yesterday; he was hitting the holes hard and breaking tackles and still had good speed. He's definitely got some potential and with Mendenhall we have some good size and power back in our running game to compliment FWP.

I would love to see 3 strong backs this year. It's hard to see them get lots of playing time, but I'm still a big fan of depth at the position. Especially for the Steelers where you can use 3 guys on a 15 play, 90 yard drive full of rushes.

I hope Mendenhall gets it together on the practice field. Mike Hart showed last night against the 'skins that you can have success in the early stages of the preseason. And of course there's Adrian Peterson from last year's regular season...

Alot of people forget this dude ran for almost 1200 yds and 20 tds in 05 splitting time w/ Maroney at Minnesota. Academic In-eligibility in his final year is what kept him from being drafted. He definately has the talent and physical make up to be a factor on this team. For right now he is and has been our best short yardage back. The more carries he gets the more effective he will be this season.

What also kept him from being drafted was being out of shape at the Combine and running a 4.7 or something. I do like the depth at running back, one of the few postions where a committee is not necessarily a bad thing.

ok their physiques are not similar at all, russell is kinda round and mendenhall is kinda jacked....he might be a good goal line runner but to say hes the best after one goal line drill, the first full contact one of camp is kinda dumb

Its great to have so much depth at this position. If one goes down, we still have 2 great backs left. Sounds like Tomlin really likes Russell with the short yardage plays. Works for me as long as he gets the job done!

Whos better K? Will Russell be the best at the end of camp?? I hope not, hopefully Mendenhall cements himself in that position. But going into this preseason i kinda have to think Russell is our best option. Im not willing don Mende the god of all RB's in preseason like most people here. He's gotta prove he can play on this level first. I hope he's the next LT and parker takes a backseat to him, but thats no sure thing!

russell is a baller, ive said that since day one....but dont get down on mendy after one goal line drill thats ****ing stupid...i cant believe were having this conversation, this is just like saying timmons is a bust after one injury, only dumber because it was one practice against a beast of a defense. If mendenhall got in every carry i would consider that a problem because our defense is great

We got alot of depth at RB Parker, Mendenhall, Russell, and Moore.........each player will add something to the offense if given a chance....1-2 punch with Parker and Mendenhall, 3rd downs with Russell or Moore...

I have always liked Gary Russell....I wanted the Steelers to bring him as an undrafted FA......He had the talent to be drafted and was a bad-*** at Minnesota.....So no surprise to me if he can play.....I don't think he ever will be a super star...But a quality NFL RB....Which is fine..

I still think Mendenhall will prove to be the real deal....Having faith and thinking Mendenhall is a bad-*** isn't thinking he is the God of RBs or whatever that ****ing post was about...lol For real posts like that get on my nerves...lol.....I don't ever remember reading Rashard Mendenhall being the God of NFL RBs...lol

Moore has looked solid out there this camp so far...I liked the signing when it happened.....The Steelers have serious depth at the RB position....

I hope so! But I hope that in a 3rd down* capacity, not in a "injury replacement" capacity.

MVP, Moore won't be the short yardage back. He is the 3rd down back/Return Specialist.

By the way, DJ Hackett could stake a claim for the title of free agent steal.

Who had Moore as the short yardage back....He returns punts....He hasn't returned many kick-offs the last few years...So I don't look for him to return kick-offs...But he will be the Steelers version of Keven Faulk.....Which is fine by me.....Faulk has bailed out Brady many times throughout the years.....

Moore may be 3rd down back

but short yardage is a whole diff story... Id be kool with Russell (or Menden) winning that shot.

Does Russell play any other special teams? b/c during the season, IF, he won the "short yardage" back slot. He would take up an active gameday spot. If he doesnt do anyother ST. I just say go with one of the 3 we'll have playing already for the short yardage package.

After the 2007 season I think most of us were feeling that the RB position was at this point a liability with no depth behind Parker to speak of but after a solid offseason and draft we're back to having a real nice group of guys back there. :yellowthumb:

I never said i was disappointed in Mende nor did i dismiss him because of one drill! I said i was disappointed in the O as a whole for failing to get in one time against out goaline D. Then i merely stated to this point Russel was still our best GL option . I HOPE Mende will earn his way to our short yardage guy, from what i have seen he appears to be quite capable.

Alot of people here have been saying Mende should be starting, will have parkers job by midseason. Thats what i meant by "god of RBs". If my post pissed yinz guys off so bad imagine how pissed i get when people bash parker after 3 1200 yd seasons and a couple probowls. Yeah his YPA and Td's are down, but he still dictates the way D's try to defend us. Eight in the box means big things for Ben in play-action. Say what you want but its not like we have a bum at RB in Parker. He scored on his first attempt at GL drill last night.

Word is they are going to give Carey Davis a shot at this too. He spent his offseason bulking up his neck and shoulders to be able to give/take more abuse head on this season.

I never called Willie Parker a bum and stated many times that I don't mind him starting.....I'm still a Parker fan.....

Its just my opinion that since the Steelers used a first round pick on Rashard Mendenhall it will just be a matter of time before he is the starter.....I think it will be 09 but I wouldn't be shocked if its late in the season this year...If Rashard proves it on the field this year.....It has nothing to do with Willie Parker....More so of Rashard being a first round pick...

I never knocked Parker...I have only stated I didn't want him to have another 300 carry season...

Totally agree with you, and for the record, i realize that you are one of the few people that arent down on Parker. There are people on this site and even in the media who are calling for Mendenhall to step up right now and win the starting job. Thats is all im trying to say. I'd love to see Willie stay sub 250 carries this year with mende taking about 100 or so. But This offesne will go as far as the coaching staff will let it this season. Mike and Bruce are gonna have to find a way to maximize reps with Mende, Sweed and Spaeth with out taking too much away from guys like Parker, Holmes, Miller and Ward. Its a good problem to have.

Linebackers Larry Foote and Lawrence Timmons both said that Mendenhall is a load on the inside and has good hands as a receiver.

whew good thing....i mean after he didnt get into the endzone on a goal line drill i was sure he was gonna be a bust....this is encouraging

You should have read the crap on fever......Some fans were really freaking out that Mendenhall couldn't punch it in for six in his first goal line drill...lol....Dude its funny how some Steelers fans always over react....I remember at camp some years when Jerome was on the team when the offense couldn't punch it in for six against our D in the goal line drill....

Hell remember the whole pre-season 2005....The starting offense looked like crap the whole 2005 pre-season.....There was serious doubts about our offense after that pre-season by some fans....Which the offense proved to be fine since the team won the Super Bowl...lol

I have never doubted Mendenhall and thought it was a total over reaction to even doubt Mendenhall for failing to punch it in for six in his first attempt in the goal line drill....One drill doesn't make a career...lol

As for Russell...He is talented in his own right but I don't think he will be anything near the RB that Rashard Mendenhall will be.......Rashard is going to be a star.....He has all the tools....
