Do the Steelers Want Kevin Jones? (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/06/29/do-the-steelers-want-kevin-jones/)

A day after they cut Najeh Davenport (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/06/28/steelers-dump-the-dump-truck/) because of the team's glut of running backs, the Steelers had a scout (http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2008/06/lions_attend_kevin_jones_worko.html)at ex-Lions' running back Kevin Jones (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/tag/KevinJones/)' workout.

There's something said for being thorough, as the Steelers now have another scouting report on Jones to stick into his file. But beyond that, I can't think of any logical explanation for why the Steelers would bother to show up, when 28 other teams didn't.

Jones would be no better than the team's No. 3 running back (behind Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall) if he signed, and because Mewelde Moore will return punts, Jones would likely not even dress on gamedays. Even if he's struggling to find a job, some team should be able to do better than that.

There are instances where the Steelers have taken unwanted guys and turned them into something--Charlie Batch is a great example. But in Jones' case, it's hard to think of any reason the Steelers would be interested. Hopefully Steelers scouts are even more thorough when it comes to scouting offensive linemen.

In a word...

in a few more words, considering Jones in an already crowded backfield where they just released a veteran so they would have a roster spot for Russel tells me it's just doing their homework in case the need would arise to pick him up some time in the future.

I think they were just checking to make sure they weren't missing anything... besides the last thing they need right now is another RB unless they want to put someone on the PS

Can't see the Steelers making a honest attempt after him. They just cleaned up the backfield a little bit.

06-30-2008, 10:29 AM
maybe they are checking him out for the FB position....:dunno:

That would be a negative Captain. He can't play Full Back.

ditto, just keeping an educated backup plan open, that's all....

Our back field will be pretty damn good as it is without him. But I did read, he ran a 4.3-40 on wet grass.....

It was a shuttle. Not a 40.

id take him. the guy was cut a little prematurely. id take a chance on him.

The Pittsburgh Steelers received a visit Wednesday from former Detroit Lionsí running back, Kevin Jones. The visit was a follow-up after the Steelers had sent college scouting director Ron Hughes to a Jones workout in Saline, Michigan in late June (http://mvn.com/nfl-steelers/2008/06/29/former-lions-running-back-kevin-jones-on-steelers-radar/).
Jones is attempting to recover from knee surgery to repair an anterior cruciate ligament tear.

Itís unknown where Jones would fit on this team after they picking up running backs Rashard Mendenhall via draft, and Mewelde Moore via free agency, both to back up starter Willie Parker. Itís unquestioned that Jones, a former 1,000 yard rusher, is talented when healthy. Still, the Steelers seem set at running back.
Speculation is that Kevin Jones may be set to sign an early contract so that he can take part in training camp. The Steelers are the only team to have met with the running back after his June workout. Jones is scheduled to meet with Tampa Bay next week. The Buccaneers were not one of the four teams at the workout, and also seem set at running back with Earnest Graham, Cadillac Williams, Michael Bennett and Warrick Dunn.
Jones probably wouldnít be ready by the beginning of the season, but it could be an interesting proposition for the Steelers to add Jones to their running back situation after the halfway point. Obviously, injuries canít be predictied, but Jones would provide the Steelers with a viable replacement should something serious happen to any of the other Steelersí running backs.
Gary Russell, assumed to be the fourth-string running back on the team, would be the odd-man out. Russell, who was good enough to share time with Lawrence Maroney in Minnesota, is believed to have starting talent. Unfortunately, it doesnít appear as though heíll get an opportunity to see the field for the Steelers, even if Jones doesnít sign.
It seems unbelievable to me, but the Pittsburgh Steelers are seriously considering signing Jones. Itís not that I donít want him on the team, because I do. It just seems to be an unbelievable amount of riches for the Steelers at running back should he sign. With the Steelers being the only team to visit with Jones twice, it may just be a matter of time. The bonus is that Jones will had had at a bargain-basement price.
Look for Jones to visit with the Buccaneers next week, and make his decision soon thereafter. He could be within the Steelersí fold before players report on July 27th.

We don't need him. We're stacked at RB.

I just hope this isn't a sign that Mike Tomlin will be for RBs what Jon Gruden is for QBs.

I don't see where he fits.

ESPN just reported that Jones signed a 1 year contract with the Bears. Now the Steelers need to sign their first two picks and go get Bentley for some OL depth!

You are correct.

The agent for unsigned RB Kevin Jones says his client will sign with either the Steelers or Bears on Tuesday.

The Bucs are out of the running. His best shot at immediate playing time is in Chicago, where he'd be a threat to Matt Forte's passing-down snaps. Jones might be admitting desperation if he joins Pittsburgh's loaded backfield.

The Steelers may have made a huge mistake not taking KJ.
There's no question that the torn ACL from Dec. 2007 will limit Kevin Jones until at least the point he gets far enough away from the injury. Kevin Jones is a warrior, very fast and The myopic approach that the Lions took with Kevin Jones is the latest example why it's difficult to have confidence in the organization. Best of luck to KJ in his recovery from the torn ACL , the remainder of his NFL career, and in all future endeavors. KJ is going to be missed.

The team is pretty high on Russel right now, they let Davenport go in favor of him so between Willie, Rashard, and Russel that's going to be our backfield along with Moore. I wouldn't have minded Jones in the mix in a support role in case someone gets injured because our depth at RB, veteran wise, is not very deep. It's up to the group we have now to get it done.

It doesn't matter who we have in our backfield unless we do somthing with our OL!
