"It's a... HOCKEY NIGHT in Pittsburgh!"
-Mike Lange

Hockey season is here and this is the place to discuss anything and everything about this season's Penguins. It should be a push to get into the playoffs this year but it's possible with guys like Crosby and Malkin along with Nils Ekman (underrated IMO) and Jordan Staal.

Lets go Pens!!!

Since when do the Flyers have Nedved?

PITT23
10-05-2006, 08:09 PM
I dont think we had a quick lead like this at all last season.

And I dont know when Nedved came to them, I know he was with NY for a while. He's old though...

Well I don't follow hockey much. But go Pens go. They do seem to have maybe the next Mario/Jagr combo in Crosby and Malkin.

Amazing job on the penalty kill by them in that 1st period. I'm interested in this press conference w/ the new owner.

And what a great fight by Colby, he really crushed the Philly guy.

And before that he put a huge hit on another Flyer, which caused the fight.

Go Pens

SteelerFan87
10-05-2006, 10:25 PM
Yeah, the offense looked good, with contributions from lots of guys, not just the people you'd expect. Fleury was amazing, the penalty kill was great (although I don't like the number of penalties), and the defense overall looked very good.

i just got back from the game, what a crowd tonight! it almost felt like a steeler game, almost. fluery looked great in net, and well crosby is crosby. i was really impressed with colby armstrong, i think he'll have a great year.

SteelerFan87
10-07-2006, 11:48 PM
Well, the Pens lost tonight, 2-0. It was a good defensive game though. Fleury was great again, and really kept them in the game. The defense was pretty good again too. The only thing was Detroit's defense was just better. They managed to shut down Crosby, who only had, what, 1 shot on goal?

But, the Pens are still playing well, against some good teams, so I'm really optimistic about the team this year, especially when we get Malkin back.

Steelersfan
10-08-2006, 12:35 AM
Malkin should make a difference in games like this. He will take a lot of the heat off Crosby which should help both of them.

SteelerDan43

Pens up 1-0 after first carrer goal by Jordan Staal shorthanded

Should be a good 3rd period, the team that wins will probably be the one that stays out of the penalty box.

SteelerDan43
10-12-2006, 09:00 PM
Whitney gets the go ahead goal, 4-3 Pens

PITT23
10-12-2006, 09:00 PM
Great pass by Corsby right into Whitney and a Penguins goal. Now we need M-A Fleury to be a brick wall.

PITT23
10-12-2006, 09:10 PM
Nothin to do on that, not sure why we're getting into all these 5 on 3 situations anyways.

Im listening on NY radio and they are blaming it on the refs call w/ a minute or so to go

PITT23
10-12-2006, 09:44 PM
And you'd think they would be watching the Mets but oh well, NY fans always need someone to put their blame onto. Did Crosby pick up 4 points tonight?

SteelerFan87
10-12-2006, 09:45 PM
The Pens got screwed by bad calls at the end of games all last year. I'd say we deserve to have one go our way. Great win.

Holy crap, the Pens are the only Pittsburgh pro team that's above .500.

PITT23
10-14-2006, 04:27 PM
This is great:

If ever there was a night that gave Penguins fans a glimpse of the future it was this game. The Penguins became the first team in 24 years to have 3 teenagers score in a single game. Staal and Letang both recorded their first NHL goals help spark the Penguins to a 6-5 win. This came on the heels of the other teenager Crosby scoring a PP goal off the a Rangers D with 3 ticks left on the clock to steal at least one point from the Rangers.

PITT23
10-14-2006, 07:51 PM

Sidney Crosby is the 6th ranked center

Gonchar is ranked 5th among defense with Whitney 8th

I officially hate the San Jose Sharks. What, did they want to take the title of "dirtiest team in the NHL" away from the Flyers? Whenever one of your best offensive players is ejected in the first minute for a cheap shot, you know you're a dirty team. And what was up with all the crap after the whistle? I understand pushing people around after the whistle once in a while if you're trying to get them out of your crease, but after every single whistle? It seemed like every time play stopped, one of them was trying to start something, but wouldn't actually fight like a man. I had heard the Sharks hadn't allowed a short handed goal all year, and now I think I understand why. It's because they never let the other teams penalty box get fuller than theirs!

I think this is something you will see from alot of teams against the pens, they have to find a way to slow the young guys down. So there only choice is to try to rough them up as they sure as hell cant stop them otherwise.

Other revenues also available if team exercises extension here
Friday, January 12, 2007

By Mark Belko, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Penguins won't have to skate off to Kansas City to play in a rent-free arena next season. They can get the same deal at Mellon Arena.

Lost in the discussion over Plan B is that the Penguins can exercise a short-term lease extension for Mellon Arena this summer that would give them more control over building revenues without paying any rent, perhaps while a new facility is constructed.

Under the proposed extension, the Penguins would become master tenants of the arena in place of SMG, a property management group that specializes in running publicly owned facilities. SMG would become building manager.

With the change, the Penguins would stop paying rent to SMG, estimated at close to $2 million a year, and would have greater access to such building revenues as concessions and parking, for both hockey and non-hockey events. Those could generate close to $20 million in gross revenues annually.

But there are costs associated with such an extension as well, including a $5 million payment due to SMG when the switch is made. The Penguins also would pay SMG to manage the arena at an amount to be determined.

The arena management changes, negotiated as part of the team's 1999 bankruptcy filing, could give the Penguins interim relief during construction of a new arena, which won't be finished until at least 2009, assuming the franchise can reach a deal with state and local officials over funding.

They also could serve as the framework for a long-term lease for the Penguins in a new building. With gambling proceeds financing the lion's share of the construction, state and local officials have said they have the ability to offer the team virtually all arena revenues.

The Penguins have until next month to exercise a proposed one-year lease extension, but it's unlikely that they will sign on unless they have reached a deal with Gov. Ed Rendell, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato on funding for a new arena.

The extension would kick in at the end of June, at the same time the team's current lease expires, leaving the franchise free to move elsewhere.

Mellon Arena is the oldest venue in the National Hockey League, and the Penguins have long insisted that they need a new home if they are to stay competitive with other franchises.

Marc Ganis, president of Sportscorp Ltd., a Chicago sports business consulting firm, said a Mellon Arena lease extension, even under more favorable terms, would work "only on an interim basis."

Even if the team is getting all of the arena revenue, it's "still playing catch-up" compared to clubs in newer, bigger facilities that generate more revenue.

"[An extension works] only as an interim step and only if they have a new arena deal or expect a new arena deal shortly. It is not something you would look at on a long-term basis, just as a bridge," he said.

Although the Penguins wouldn't have to pay rent in the switch with SMG and would get most arena revenues, including parking, they would be responsible for the building's operating costs, which is not unusual for teams that have control over money streams.

As part of the deal negotiated in the 1999 bankruptcy, the Penguins also would have to make the $5 million lump sum payment to compensate SMG for building assets and for the change in management. SMG originally was to serve as master tenant until 2012.

The $5 million payment would be in addition to a management fee paid to SMG. The amount is not known but is believed to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The $5 million payment also may have to be accounted for in some fashion in the negotiations on a new arena. Even if a deal is reached, the Penguins still would have to play in Mellon Arena for at least two more seasons and most likely would want building revenues and the same rent-free offer they have from Kansas City, which opens the $276 million Sprint Center in October.

Neither the Penguins nor SMG would comment about a possible extension on the arena lease. Mr. Onorato also wouldn't talk about a possible extension yesterday, saying through a spokesman the issue is related to the Plan B negotiations on which he has not been commenting.

State and local officials have been working diligently to put together a deal under Plan B after a meeting last week between Mr. Onorato, Mr. Rendell and Mr. Ravenstahl and Penguins owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle.

They would like to reach an agreement before the end of next week. The Penguins have said they want to make a decision by early February between Pittsburgh and Kansas City.

Under the original Plan B, the Penguins were required to make an upfront payment of $8.5 million and contribute $4 million a year, including $1.16 million annually in naming rights, toward the construction.

However, state and local leaders presented a somewhat sweetened version last week. Although the exact details aren't known, the Penguins' annual contribution likely will end up closer to $2.9 million, the same the Pirates paid toward PNC Park.

The $8.5 million payment may be accounted for in the sale of the old St. Francis Central Hospital on Centre Avenue to the city-county Sports & Exhibition Authority, which needs it as part of the new arena site. The Penguins purchased the property for $8 million.

Mr. Ganis sees the Penguins remaining in Pittsburgh, assuming they can reach an arena deal with very little capital costs to the team and decent revenue streams.

Despite the much heralded rent-free offer in Kansas City, Mr. Ganis views it as an "above average deal and that's it. The reason for that is it's not a great market.

"As it stands right now, I don't see it as a great relocation opportunity other than a building being under construction right now. But it's a thoroughly mediocre market," he said.

Another factor that could work against Kansas City is that naming rights already have been accounted for and flow to Anschutz Entertainment Group. The Penguins would have the ability to cut their own deal in Pittsburgh, one likely to generate at least $2 million a year for the team.

Prudential announced this week it would pay $105.3 million over 20 years to put its name on the New Jersey Devils' new arena, although no one expects a bid that high for the Pittsburgh rights.

Arena talks may continue soon
By Andrew Conte
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Gov. Ed Rendell plans to meet with Penguins officials in Pittsburgh this week to discuss for a second time how to pay for a new Uptown arena, sources said Monday.

In town for a health care initiative Friday, Rendell is seeking to meet with the hockey team's owners either Thursday evening at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel or the next morning at the State Office Building, Downtown.

The meeting likely will include Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and team co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ronald Burkle. The timing of the meeting depends on everyone's schedules.

A Penguins spokesman declined to comment, as did Rendell's spokeswoman. Ravenstahl's spokesman Dick Skrinjar said he did not know of the meeting.

Onorato could not be reached yesterday, which was Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Rendell's original $290 million arena proposal, often called Plan B, included $14.5 million a year for 30 years in gambling money.

The Penguins would have paid $8.5 million up front and $2.9 million a year, while forgoing $1.16 million a year in naming rights.

The latest version could include the city-county Sports & Exhibition Authority paying $8.5 million to Lemieux's development group for the former St. Francis Hospital site, which Lemieux's group bought in 2001. The team could use that money for the arena down payment.

Onorato has hinted that public officials could drop the naming rights requirement as well.

Lemieux and Burkle last met Jan. 4 with state and local leaders in Pittsburgh. Coming out of the meeting, Lemieux said he felt "optimistic" about keeping the team here.

The team owners were in Kansas City earlier that day to talk about moving the Penguins to that city's new Sprint Center arena, set to open in October.

The Penguins' lease at Mellon Arena expires in June.

Rendell says Penguins given best offer of any NHL team
Friday, January 19, 2007

By Mark Belko, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Gov. Ed Rendell said today that public officials have offered the Penguins the best deal any National Hockey League team has received to build an arena in recent years.

The governor, who participated in a meeting between public officials and team executives late last night, elaborated on the discussions to keep the team in Pittsburgh as he emerged from the Sheraton Hotel in Station Square this morning.

He said that, under terms discussed last night, the Penguins would be expected to contribute a fraction of what the Pirates, Steelers and three Philadelphia teams -- the Eagles, Flyers and Phillies -- put into their new facilities in recent years.

He said the Pirates contributed 18 percent of the construction costs for PNC Park. The Penguins' expected contribution would be significantly below that, he said, but he wouldn't give a dollar figure.

"I believe the offer we put before the Penguins is the best of any offer that's been made to any NHL team for a new stadium in recent times and it's also by far the best of any offer made to any Pennsylvania professional sports team for a new stadium."

Officials on both sides of last night's meeting generally were closed-mouthed after the session, a contrast to the optimism expressed after the first round of meetings.

Mr. Rendell said, "We made progress on some things and went back on others and that's very common in negotiations." Asked what they "went back on," he said, "some of the requests for relief from the Penguins."

"I hoped we would have made more" progress, the governor said. "I'm still hopeful, but there's a lot of posturing that goes on. That's true in these types of negotiations, that's true in business negotiations, it's true in labor negotiations."

Penguins souring on Plan B
Governor calls deal hard to beat, but team balks at splitting development rights, parking

Saturday, January 20, 2007
By Mark Belko, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Gov. Ed Rendell yesterday said the arena deal being offered the Penguins is better than others struck recently in the National Hockey League, but the team has balked at a proposal to share development rights and parking revenues with Pittsburgh casino backer Don Barden.

Another issue that has come up in the talks is $10 million the Penguins may owe Isle of Capri Casinos Inc., which lost to Mr. Barden in the bidding for the city's casino license.

According to Mr. Rendell, the Penguins agreed to pay that amount if Isle of Capri failed to win the casino license but the team still secured a new arena in Pittsburgh.

During an interview yesterday, Mr. Rendell, coming off a late-night round of negotiations with the team Thursday, said the Penguins' share of the arena financing would be a "fraction" of what Pennsylvania's other professional sports franchises -- the Steelers, Pirates, Flyers, Eagles, and Phillies -- contributed toward their new homes.

"I believe the offer we put before the Penguins is the best of any offer that's been made to any NHL team for a new [arena] in recent times and it's also by far the best of any offer made to any Pennsylvania professional sports team for a new stadium," he said.

Mr. Rendell added that the Penguins' share under a sweetened Plan B funding formula would be "significantly below" the 18 percent the Pirates paid toward the construction of the $260 million PNC Park.

The Steelers paid about 44 percent of the $281 million cost of Heinz Field. Under Plan B, the Penguins initially would have paid about 20.7 percent toward a $290 million arena.

An October Post-Gazette survey found that since 2000, NHL teams have contributed anywhere from nothing to 30 percent of the cost of building new arenas.

While the governor touted the proposed Plan B deal as hard to beat, the Penguins apparently felt otherwise during a 90-minute meeting Thursday that broke off without an agreement.

According to sources, team representatives, including co-owner Ron Burkle, were stunned when state and local officials proposed that the Penguins share development rights and parking revenues with Mr. Barden, who was a surprise visitor to the negotiations.

The team saw the proposal as a worse deal than it would get under an extension available next year at Mellon Arena, one that would allow rent-free use of the building and give the franchise control over all building revenues, including parking.

In addition to sharing parking revenues and development rights, the state, city and county also want the team to pay rent at the new arena, in excess of the roughly $2 million a year it pays SMG at Mellon Arena, sources said.

Team officials saw the latest proposal as a setback after a "very positive" Jan. 4 meeting, they said. They were surprised to see Mr. Barden, who was invited by Mr. Rendell, and the proposals for sharing development rights and parking revenues. They also felt the overall plan represented a retreat from the previous session.

Mr. Barden has committed to providing $7.5 million a year for 30 years toward a new arena under the Rendell-crafted Plan B, which also calls for contributions from the Penguins and a slots-financed state economic development fund.

The casino operator said Thursday night he joined the talks to "observe and see if I can be helpful. I want to do everything I can to see that the Penguins stay in Pittsburgh."

The Penguins declined comment on all aspects of the talks yesterday, saying in a statement that "we'll continue to explore all of our options."

One of those options is Kansas City, where the $276 million Sprint Center will open this fall. The Penguins are being offered a deal that includes free rent and a share of building revenues. It's likely that the team will explore that option more seriously in the wake of Thursday's meeting. The Penguins' Mellon Arena lease expires at the end of June.

Mr. Rendell said the proposal to share development rights is a result of a city-Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority resolution passed in 2005 offering such rights to any casino operator or private investor who commits to building a new arena........

Rendell: Appeal to NHL possible if Penguins try to leave

Tuesday, January 23, 2007
By Mark Belko and Rich Lord, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The deal offered by local officials to the Penguins for a new arena is so good that, if the team tries to leave town, Gov. Ed Rendell would take his case directly to the National Hockey League, Mr. Rendell said today.

The governor, speaking at another event in Downtown Pittsburgh this morning, was asked his reaction to comments yesterday by team owner Mario Lemieux. Mr. Lemieux said he was "very disappointed" with the deal being offered and reiterated his willingness to "explore other options," including relocation of the team.

But Mr. Rendell revealed more about the offer by the state, city and county, including some sweeteners, and repeated his statement of last week that it is the best deal any sports team in the state has received in recent years to build a new facility.

"We do not want to have to go to the NHL Board of Governors. We want to conclude this deal," Mr. Rendell said. "But we will have no alternative," given the proposal, if the Penguins reject it.

Mr. Rendell said the state is offering some funds for infrastructure and would even be willing to direct some tourism funds for advertising at a new arena.

But one sticking point is that the team wants to be compensated for a $10 million payment it owes Isle of Capri, which had a development deal with the team to build an arena if if won a license to build a casino in the city. Isle of Capri lost, triggering the $10 million payment. Mr. Rendell said public officials are not inclined to cover that debt.

Isle of Capri's failure to get the license led to the current round of talks.

Mr. Rendell said he has also heard that Penguins officials plan to visit Houston to check out facilities there.

Earlier today, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato said they are still optimistic they can negotiate a deal.

"We understand the frustration," said Mr. Ravenstahl. "It's been seven years" since Mr. Lemieux first approached public officials for help with financing a new arena.

"We're negotiating, we're optimistic, we continue to believe we can get a deal done," said Mr. Onorato.

The Penguins are upset over a proposal that would require them to share development rights near Mellon Arena and parking revenues with Pittsburgh casino developer Don Barden.

Mr. Ravenstahl and Mr. Onorato refused to discuss specifics, but the mayor referred to Mr. Rendell's statements last week that "there are always steps forward and steps back" in negotiations.

The two officials would not say when further meetings would occur.

Well when Thibault gets up you can see the puck over the line. But that's not the point. The thing that pisses me off is that every time the Pens are trying to score and the ref loses sight of the puck, he blows the whistle IMMEDIATELY. We've had quite a few goals taken away that way. But this time, NOBODY can see the puck, but the ref waits, and waits, and waits, and without even knowing where the puck is he signals goal. That's bullshit. And especially with like 30 seconds left of a 1-1 game?? The teams have fought that hard to at least get 1 point for OT, and you take it away by allowing a bullshit goal?

CROSBY, MALKIN WRAP UP SCORING TITLES

by Joe Sager
pittsburghpenguins.com
04/07/2007

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin capped the regular season in style Saturday night.

Crosby pushed his NHL-leading points total to 120 with a pair of assists against the Rangers. Meanwhile, Malkin wrapped up the year leading all rookies in scoring with 85 points.

The last NHL team to finish a season with the overall points leader and the rookie points leader was 1959-60 Blackhawks. Bobby Hull won the Art Ross Trophy and Bill Hay led all rookies in points.

Crosby, who tallied 102 points last year as a rookie, finished the 2006-07 regular season with 36 goals and 84 assists in 79 games. At only 19, he will become the youngest player in NHL history to win the Art Ross Trophy as the scoring champion. It marks the 12th time in the past 19 season that a Penguins player has won the award. Crosby beat San Jose’s Joe Thornton, who finished with 114 points (22+92) in 82 games.

And, Crosby is the youngest scoring champion in any major professional sport.

“It’s a nice accomplishment. I didn’t come into the season expecting it,” Crosby said. “I just tried to have the best season possible and I was just lucky to get it. I am sure I will think about it more after the season. It’s nice to get it, but it’s playoff time and that’s where my focus is.”

Meanwhile, Malkin tallied 33 goals and 52 assists in 78 games to win the rookie scoring title. Colorado’s Paul Stastny was second with 78 points (28+50) in 82 games.

“I am not thinking about the rookie scoring title,” Malkin said. “Right now, the No. 1 thing I am thinking about is the playoffs and the next game.”

Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar fell two points short of leading all NHL defensemen in scoring as well. He wrapped up the regular season with 67 points (13+54). Anaheim’s Scott Niedermayer was first with 69 points

Bumping this thread for the 07-08 season, lol.

What a game last night! By the time I remembered it was on, it was already 2-0 senators, but right after that Malkin just slices through the whole Senators team and scores a great goal, and then right as I complain about Malone not being enough of a goal scorer since his rookie year, he ties it up, and then Kennedy gives us the lead in the 2nd period. Then Ottawa comes back and scores 3 goals to make it 5-3 and again it looks like it's over, but the Pens battle back again, tie it up, and then Jarko Ruutu wins it with another great shootout goal. How is it that Crosby can't seem to score in the shootout, but Ruutu makes it look so easy?

Thank Gary Bettman and his group of lackeys and buffoons for what he is trying to pass off to the general paying public as hockey. Bettman is such a joke.
