Not so fast: Penguins win in third OT
Penguins stop Detroit's title party on Sykora's goal in 3rd OT
Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Petr Sykora scored the winner from the right dot on a power play at 9:57 in the third overtime.DETROIT -- This game was supposed to be nothing more than a 60-minute formality.

The Penguins had been penciled in as props, a 20-man ensemble charged with offering just enough resistance to keep TV viewers and the Joe Louis Arena crowd interested until Detroit earned the opportunity to parade the Stanley Cup around their home rink.

Did anyone expect genuine suspense? Yeah, right. About as much as a typical North Korean election.

These Penguins apparently didn't understand their season was destined to end last night.

And it didn't.

They earned one of the most dramatic victories in franchise history by defeating Detroit, 4-3, in triple-overtime of Game 5 to slice the Red Wings' lead in the Cup final to 3-2. Game 6 will be at 8:08 p.m. tomorrow at Mellon Arena.

"It's a huge game," winger Petr Sykora said. "We just wanted to get this one and go back to Pittsburgh."

Sykora scored the winner at 9:57 of the third overtime -- the fifth-longest game in Cup final history -- when he threw a shot past Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood from the right dot.

"I hated to see Petr Sykora get that puck," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "You just know it's going in."

back to Pittsburgh!

I have a hockey hangover. Went to bed after 1am and got up at 5am..like I always do. I am soo tired and my body aches because that game was so tense last night that my whole body was tense at the same time. And by the way...I swear Malkin is hurt...something just isn't right with him.

Woot! What a game! I agree Susie. I was just talking about that with some friends last night. He has to be.

I think he might be hurt but they are keeping it hush hush so no one knows. He just looks lost on the ice...at least he did get the assist on the overtime goal.

Very odd PA lottery number was 7171. Malkin to Sykora for the win. 71 to 17 lol.

How about this. A good friend of the family's son is a Red Wings fan. We have a bet on who will win. He came in my parents' bar right after Detroit scored the goal with 10 minutes to go. Left with about 3 minutes to go praising his Wings for winning the cup. 34 second left Max scores the goal. 2 hours later I get the privilege of calling him after Sykora buried the puck behind Osgood and saying what happened. They polished Lord Stanley up and had to put him away. That was the icing on the cake!

Bet he never brags like that then leaves again.

Like your thinking on this one!! :yellowthumb: Still got a tall hill to climb but the boys believe they can do it and thats what counts the most !! Also agree Malkin is hurtand they said during the game that Sykora is hurt to- " we will talk to him(Sykora) after the series is over and will have the scoop on this". I hope they are gonna have to wait a couple more games.. GO PENS!!

Go Pens! The main thing is that we go back to the Burgh! And that they know they can win in detroit. the Steelers won the Superbowl there, now the Pens win the cup there

Not to Pee on your parade Prosdo, but that Clinton won the election though. So, hope this doesn't change the karma.
