I think once we get this done we just might see a couple of minor FA moves. Not many though.

KDKA TV local news just reported its very close to being done and could be announced as soon as tomorrow. Its expected to be the richest contract in Steelers history. Somewhere in the range of 8-10 years with 30 million dollars being guaranteed. It would be great to lock up Big Ben for that long lets get it done Mr.Rooney.

Yep I just got the text a couple minutes ago too, this is awesome! I was hoping we'd get this done before we got too far along in the offseason!

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Ben Roethlisberger has put together a terrific resume in four years as quarterback for the Steelers.

And even though he still has two years left on his current deal, KDKA's Bob Pompeani reports that the Steelers could be close to signing Big Ben to a brand new long-term deal that will make him, by far, the highest paid player in franchise history.

The new deal could be announced as soon as Monday.

Pompeani reports that sources indicate this deal will be somewhere in the neighborhood of eight to 10 years, and based on what the recent market has been for quarterbacks who just signed, guys like Marc Bulger and Tony Romo, the guaranteed part of this deal will be in excess of $30 million.

Roethlisberger has a terrific four year resume and last year proved that the previous season was an aberration. He has emerged as a top tier quarterback and will be paid accordingly.

Pompeani also reports that when he spoke with Art Rooney II and Kevin Colbert last month, they both indicated that signing Roethlisberger was their No. 1 off-season priority.

This deal will be very long, so as to help pro-rate the guarantees, which could make the total number of dollars on paper very high.

Pompeani reports that this deal is not yet signed, but it could be very close.

Definitely be glad to see him signed, but what are those kind of numbers going to do to the salary cap, which is already strained.

The Steelers will make the deal stretch out as far as they can and give him a HUGE signing bonus to stretch out the hit as much as possible..plus you can bet in the coming years he'll be one of the ones restructuring to free up more space. Ben is the king pin to this whole team, if we don't sign him we might as well kiss any future success goodbye for a long time so it's good the team is close to getting this deal done. We don't want Ben to even sniff free agency ever!

Steelers Extend Ben Roethlisberger (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/03/03/steelers-extend-ben-roethlisberger/)

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/sports.aol.com/fanhouse/media/2008/03/benroethlisberger.jpg

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7866918/Steelers,-Big-Ben-reach-deal-on-extension) that the Pittsburgh Steelers have reached an agreement on a long-term contract extension for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/tag/BenRoethlisberger/).

A long-term deal for Roethlisberger was considered one of the Steelers' top priorities this off-season.

Although no details have been announced, Roethlisberger's guarantee is likely to exceed $30 million, and, depending on the length of the contract, it could have the largest total value of any contract in NFL history.

As we've previously noted (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/02/10/big-deal-coming-for-ben-roethlisberger/), the contract (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/07/27/rams-marc-bulger-expected-to-sign-six-year-60-million-contrac/)signed by Rams quarterback Marc Bulger (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/tag/MarcBulger/)and the contract (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/10/31/inside-tony-romos-cowboys-contract-11-5-million-signing-bonus/)signed by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/tag/TonyRomo/) both had total values in the $60 million range and guaranteed money in the $30 million range. Roethlisberger is only 25 years old and has certainly accomplished more in the NFL than the 27-year-old Romo and has arguably accomplished more than the 30-year-old Bulger.

Glazer reports that the team and Roethlisberger will make an official announcement this afternoon.
