The Steelers have so little room under the salary cap, and have such a conservative philosophy to go with it, that free agency has come to mean a door that only opens outward as their own players flee the premises.

Last I heard before we were a good 15-18 mill under the cap but after the offer to Starks and the offers to our RFA's we're down pretty low right now. Last night on NFLN they mentioned were around only 2-3 million under the cap right now which is NOT much room. You can expect to see some contract negotiating and restructuring taking place in the next couple months leading up to the draft and shortly after to free up more room.

We generally don't have a ton of money to spend under the cap as it is but how is it that in a year where the cap number has gone up such a significant amount that we still have so little to spend? It's due to backloaded contracts and players due big money that have been in their deals for a few years years but still have time to go that haven't been restructured yet this year.

Looks like our penny pinching Steelers will have to work some cap magic yet again.

If they can resign Ben to an extension and get that cap hit down, and sign Starks long term and get that 6 mill cap hit away from him that will help alot. Parker, Aaron Smith, Marvel Smith, Troy, and Hines should all restructure as well because those guys eat up a ton of room.

The FO has got their work cut out for them. Can't see any reason why any of those guys wouldn't restructure, but then again......it is a business, nothing surprises me anymore.

ASKING GUYS TO TAKE A PAY CUT IS NOT A GREAT IDEA IT WILL MAKE A BUNCH OF UNHAPPY GUYS IN THE LOCKER ROOM.

I hate when fans say this. How much time do you spend in the locker room to know this?

It's not a pay cut they need to take, it's a restructure of their existing deal to make it more cap friendly. It happens all the time and players usually don't have a problem it. Teams will give them the bulk of their money for the upcoming year in a lump sum instead of being spread out over a whole year; so the cap hit is more friendly for the current season.

So we went from like 20 million under the cap to like 2 million?? And we haven't even signed Ben yet??

WTF are the morons in our front office doing??? If this is true, why the hell did they spend so much money on Starks?!

The Steelers always find a way to make it all work and everyone comes out happy. That's why we are just fans and let the FO handle the books :bigthumb:

Ha lets call the front office morons...i guarantee ward and troy will be forced to restructure this year and we will be in good shape....our FO is great at managing the players cap hit...not good, great. this is how it happens every year and its where you want to be. if you have 40 million under the cap, chances are you suck. our FO can sign an entire draft class with $5 is cap room so chill the **** out. expect bitch boy mahan to get alot less money too

We can't just restructure each year. That's what is hurting us now. All the restructuring that we have done in the past.
