Ben Roethlisberger now has a 6-foot-6 guy to throw to, unfortunately for Roethlisberger, he's not likely to make the team.

The Steelers signed Matt Trannon (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08037/855414-66.stm?cmpid=steelers.xml), a former Michigan State receiver, along with quarterback Jared Zabransky. Zabransky will likely battle Brian St. Pierre for the team's third quarterback job. Trannon has a much steeper hill to climb. He is 6-foot-6, 235 pounds, so he's easily the biggest target Roethlisberger will have to throw to among the wide receivers, something Roethlisberger has been begging for (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/01/25/hines-ward-doesnt-understand-why-ben-roethlisberger-wants-a-tal/), but his lack of deep speed (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2007/draft/players/18793.html) (4.60 40-yard dash) combined with a less than aggressive approach to using his massive side have kept him on practice squads (Arizona and Oakland) during the 2007 season.

But if nothing else, the Trannon signing might prove to Roethlisberger how acquiring a tall receiver doesn't really mean much unless he's pretty good.

My grandma could have run a 4.6 40

The thing with big, tall WR's like this is that they have such long legs that they don't usually post that great 40 times because it takes them awhile to get started. Plax was the same way, he wasn't the fastest guy in the world but he had deceptive speed because he has such long strides.

He is trash. Soft and a MASSIVE underacheiver at MSU. He is really slow too. Not just because of the "long strides".

I don't know much about him but if he is THAT slow then we might as well just Kendall Simmons out there to play WR

We should get a tall WR that is fast but has no hands and make him a CB. I mean, the whole reason tall WRs have such an advantage is because they're taller than the CBs covering them. So get a tall CB to cover those guys. :dunno:

Matt Trannon has potential but he doesn't seem to have the work ethic to play at the pro level. Living near Michigan State I got to see him play in college and he could be dominant in one game and disappear completely in the next. He just lacks consistency, and that isn't good at this level. I love his size, obviously, and he isn't terribly slow, ran a 4.57 40, but he drops alot of passes. Like Plax (must be a MSU thing 363

The football coach and Tom Izzo got together and talked Trannon into also joining the basketball team, thinking it woulod help his speed, etc. He was a good basketball (1st string) player.

Jerry Rice never ran better than a 4.5 4.6 for his entire career. How this guy runs his routes and his work ethic are way more important than speed. He could fit the bill for the posession receiver. Happy quarterbacks are productive quarterbacks.

rice was a dynamic athlete though, his talents and work ethic on game day exceeded anything weve seen before...dont even bring out jerry rice comparisons....for every 10000000000000 matt trannons you get one jerry rice

That's what I was just thinking reading your posts, sounds like another Plax..a whole of talent but totally underachieves. If nothing else he'll get his shot in camp but good grief I hope Tomlin brings in more WR's in the draft or FA because we need depth here desperately.
