Steelers to Sign Jared Zabransky to Compete for the No. 3 Quarterback Job (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/01/27/steelers-to-sign-jared-zabransky-to-compete-for-the-no-3-quarte/)

I'm guessing this has no bearing on Ben Roethlisberger (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/tag/BenRoethlisberger/)'s impending contract extension, but it is a sign that the third-string quarterback Brian St. Pierre (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/tag/BrianStPierre/) won't be back with the Steelers in 2008. (Time to update the "Steelers to impersonate" list, Brian Jackson.)

The team is expected to sign former Boise St. quarterback Jared Zabransky (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/tag/JaredZabransky/) on Monday. The plan, apparently, is to have Zabransky and a rookie compete for the third-team job. Charlie Batch (http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/tag/CharlieBatch/) will hold down the backup job, while Big Ben will again take his life into his own hands by playing behind the Steelers offensive line.

Whatever, Zabransky, who was 33-5 at Boise State, including two undefeated regular seasons, is excited about the opportunity (http://www.idahostatesman.com/sports/story/276828.html):
"I feel like this is an organization that knows how to win with all the championships they've had through there," Zabransky said of the five-time Super Bowl champions. "I think they're going to give me a legitimate chance to be able to prove myself. I heard through the grapevine that coach (Mike) Tomlin is a no-politics kind of guy, which is exactly what you want in my situation."That Pittsburgh has signed Zabransky signifies nothing, really. The team has gone with two quarterbacks on the game-day roster in the past, and there's no reason to think they won't do it again. Still, if Zabransky shows the Steelers something in training camp, he could also be with the team when the season starts. If nothing else, he could be Batch's heir apparent when his contract expires after '08.

BSP has been in and out of the line up more times than Matt Cushing over the years. It's high time they get a viable candidate in there to push him for his spot and make that competition something worth having.

yeah, and? ..... As tired of a cliché as it may be, "It is what it is"

There's a reason this guy has been bounced around and being cut from teams .... and it's not because he's having a hard time finding a house. Leave it to the Rooney's to find this guy floating around on eBay with nobody bidding on him.

Good sign. Adds depth tgo the QB position. Lets face it, Batch is old when need youngish backups. Maybe not this young, but it's still depth.

Batch is firmly entrenched as the main backup to Ben....do you really want BSP or Zabransky as anything more than a clipboard and scout team guy? This day and age you need 2 viable QB options on your team and Batch fills the role nicely for us. If this guy comes in and unseats BSP then more power to him.

Nothing to worry about a lot of teams have been adding players to their off season rosters the last few weeks since the regular season has ended.
Most of these guys like Jared Zabransky and Jeremy Bloom are just mini-camp and training camp fodder and they still have to make the final roster.

Easy everyone, Jared was a rookie last year, and being that to run the offense they had at Boise he has to be somewhat smart, I wouldn't mind him on the practice squad learning until Charlie caled it quits.

I've loved Jared Zabransky since that bowl game against Oklahoma.

Would I be comfortable with him having to come in if Ben and Batch go down? No. But if it gets down to the 3rd string QB, it doesn't really matter anyway. I'm sure Zabransky should be able to push St. Pierre, and if he turns out to be better than BSP, great.

At this point they need to really work on having a viable backup because Charlie isn't going to be around forever and BSP has been in and out of the lineup for years. They need to find someone and stick with them and keep that person on the team to be groomed as the main backup to Ben for when Batch leaves.

When is Batch's contract up? I sure will miss him when he goes. There is a certain level of comfort having him for a backup.

I believe after next season he is a FA.
