After seeing Ben last night on TV at the Arena for the Harlem Globetrotters event gimping around on the court I do believe this is the right move. With Magahee out and Troy Smith starting for Baltimore and the Ravens having a bunch of guys out on defense the Steelers should be able to score enough and win this game with Charlie Batch. Hopefully the Raiders help the Steelers out by beating San Diego to improve are seeding but at this point if that doesnt happen so be it bring on the Jags and then most likely the Pats. The key is having Ben Roethlisberger the guy thats gonna take this team as far as it will go healthy for any sort of playoff run this team plans on making.

I hadn't heard anything about this until now so I was wondering how he was doing. It makes sense to keep him out if he's not ready to go; the last thing we need is him aggravating that or one of the ratbirds giving him a cheap shot below the waste and causing him to wretch that leg the wrong way and make it worse.

At least Batch is getting all the snaps this week so he should be ready. We still need to get our asses in gear and win this game and put a stake right through the Ratbirds hearts !

Just heared the same via text message from KDKA.com. I think Charlie will be fine, he can use the game experience.

It's become quite evident that Tomlin wants to roll the dice and not play for the win, accept the #4 seed and let the chips fall where they may.

The chances of us getting the 3 seed are slim to none but it would take a miracle for Oakland to beat the Chargers so Tomlin does the smart thing and gets Charlie some reps in case we need him in the playoffs. Plus Batch is more than capable once he gets into a rhythmn during a game so we should be fine..looks like it's going to be a battle of the backups this week with all the starters out on the ratbirds and who knows how long our starters will play. We still better play to win this game and not let up 1 damn bit.

Injury report

Safety Troy Polamalu (inflamed knee) did not practice, and it is unlikely he will play against the Ravens. Linebacker James Harrison (groin) was limited in practice and also could be rested in Baltimore.

This team is falling apart at the seams with injuries this year. The list just continues to grow and if you step back and look at how many have missed significant time or out for the year due to injury this team has done well with the reserves stepping up to the plate.

Marvel Smith
Dan Kreider
Willie Parker
Hines Ward
Santonio Holmes
Troy Polamalu
Aaron Smith
Ben Roethlisberger
Bryant McFadden
Jerame Tuman
Deshea Townsend
Ryan Clark

The Steelers have done very well with the reserves, we'll probably go 11-5 with an injury riddled season. I hope the reserves can keep it up in the playoffs and hope Harrison and Troy are OK for the first game of the post season.

GO STEELERS!!!!!!!!!!! Bleeding Black and Gold:tt02:

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks that  Injuries all piling up at the end of season just **** me off even though there's not a damn thing I can do about it.

If this was a must win game this weekend I wonder how many of the injured players would be starting...I'd imagine we'd see most of them out there on the field but since it's not we're better off just letting them chill out, especially in a phsyical contest like the Ratbirds always give us.

Might as well and thats not a give up attitude, we have to get as many healthy for the playoffs as we can. I don't see Oakland beating SD, sure would've been nice if they were playin at 1pm, then we would already know the outcome.

You're assuming that the line will block for him right?

The ratbirds have 6 starters on IR so they are depleted and have been for quite some time now, Troy Smith gets the start again so hopefully we can get after him but he's mobile so we have to be careful.

If you look back over the years this is really no big change. I think it is calling it safe and letting our boys get some recovery time because we can damn sure use them in the playoffs. When game time comes around and it really counts the number of players on the injured list will suite up and play their hearts out. :tt02:

By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Coach Mike Tomlin would not make it official, preferring to list quarterback Ben Roethlisberger as questionable and safety Troy Polamalu as doubtful for the game tomorrow in Baltimore.

But neither Roethlisberger (ankle) nor Polamalu (knee) practiced with their respective first-team units this week and are not expected to play against the Ravens.

That means veteran Charlie Batch will make his first start at quarterback since the 2006 season opener against the Miami Dolphins, a game Roethlisberger missed because of an emergency appendectomy.

"He is questionable," Tomlin said yesterday after practice, preferring not to elaborate.

Roethlisberger, who sprained his ankle in the 41-24 victory in St. Louis last week, could have played if the game was meaningful for the Steelers. But Tomlin does not want to risk aggravating the injury by playing him against the Ravens.

Roethlisberger and Polamalu are expected to return for the wild-card playoff game next weekend at Heinz Field.

Also, return specialist Allen Rossum (hamstring) missed practice yesterday and might not play against the Ravens. He is listed as questionable.

Special-teams co-captain Clint Kriewaldt (neck) has not practiced all week and has been declared out for the game.

Russell rises

With Parker on injured reserve, rookie free agent Gary Russell will become the backup to Najeh Davenport on first- and second-down situations.

Russell has dressed for only two of 15 games this season and has just one carry since the preseason. But he could get a lot of carries against the Ravens because offensive coordinator Bruce Arians wants to get him some work, in case he is needed

"I think I showed them I'm a young, tough runner ... I'm very physical," said Russell, who was academically ineligible his senior season at Minnesota after rushing for 1,130 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior.

"Before I even got here, everyone said you have to be ready because you're only one play away. So I just sit back and watch when I'm on the sidelines. It's like a learning experience all the way around."

Thumbs up

Rookie outside linebacker Lawrence Timmons will play with a soft cast on his left hand after he broke his thumb against the St. Louis Rams.

Timmons, the team's No. 1 pick, said he sustained the injury when he fell on his hand on special teams.

But he said the cast will not affect his ability to tackle or catch the ball, should the possibility arise for an interception.

"I can still catch it pretty good," Timmons said

I'm not as concerned about the playoff games as much as I am about the long term health of players like Troy and Ben. I wouldn't want a career ending injury to any of them even for a playoff game.

Apparently Tomlin is taking no chances and is gonna rest all his players of signifgance thinkin that he can beat Baltimore with his backups since they will also be playing a lot of backups as well. Look for Davenport to get yanked early on in this game as well Ive been hearing and for Gary Russell and Verron Haynes to get a lot of carries. But once again it appears as if Ben,Troy, and Ward will all be inactive and not play today.

Ward needs the rest....His body always takes a pounding.....I can't blame Tomlin at all for resting his players....

Also Allen Rossum has been deactivated as well so look for Willie Reid or Wilson and Holmes to return punts and kickoffs.

I didn't think he would play much in this game anyways so it makes sense. I just hate having players miss time right before the playoffs because it knocks you out rhythmn you've been in but when we have so many guys hurt we don't have much choice...
