Anthony Smith went out of his way to guarantee a win against the Pats today on Sunday even though it doesnt say it here in that in the link that was posted about Smith saying the Pats receivers arent that good. This is just stupid in my opinion. Why would he do something stupid like that when your playing a team like the Pats and that kind of shiat does nothing but **** them off more and more when you play them. The Steelers are a good team but there not a good enough team yet and especially on the road when your playing a team that hasnt lost a game yet to go open your damn mouth and guarantee a victory against them in their own backyard. Tomlin should have told everyone of these players to keep a low profile this week and not open your mouth and give the Pats any extra added fuel. Ill say one thing Tomlin had better have this team ready to play Sunday for once on the road if Smith is going to come out and make statements like this. Im tired of this team coming out flat and looking horrific the last 3 or 4 road games this year.

This is a huge huge measuring stick and test for the Steelers this week. If the Steelers lose this game and play hard and play right with the Pats till the end and its a close game then maybe this team has a chance to do something, if they dont and get blown out of the water and look flat and sluggish then this team is going nowhere in the playoffs. The bottom line is Tomlin had better have this team ready to play on the road for once this week or Im going to really start to question his focus and awareness of this team. Anthony Smith's comments here though are just flat out dumb though the Steelers didnt need him to come out and say this just totally uncalled for.

Associated Press, Updated 5 minutes ago

Defensive back Anthony Smith (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/401193) is so certain the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67067) will end the New England Patriots (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67054)' unbeaten season, he is guaranteeing a win Sunday in Foxborough.

The Patriots (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67054) (12-0) may have the perfect record, Smith said Wednesday, but it should be New England that is worried about the Steelers (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67067) (9-3) rather than the other way around.

"People keep asking me if we're ready for the Patriots (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67054)," Smith said. "They should be asking if they're ready for us."

Is Smith so confident that he is willing to copy one of former Pittsburgh linebacker Joey Porter (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/70547)'s familiar motivational ploys by guaranteeing the Steelers (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67067) will win?
"We're going to win," Smith said. "Yeah, I can guarantee a win. As long as we come out and do what we got to do. Both sides of the ball are rolling, and if our special teams come through for us, we've got a good chance to win."

Despite Smith's abundant optimism, no other Steelers (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67067) are designating Sunday as guaranteed win day. Linebacker James Farrior (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/70362), cautioning that Smith hasn't been in the NFL long and may not realize what he is saying, doesn't think the Patriots (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67054) will pay any attention.

Smith, a third-round pick from Syracuse in 2006, became the starter at free safety only after Ryan Clark (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/105951) needed spleen surgery in late October.
"He better keep his mouth shut," Farrior said, though he was laughing and wasn't angry at his teammate. "Oh well, I guess we've got to go deal with that."

Defensive end Brett Keisel (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/102582) doubts Smith's words will have any impact, even if the Steelers (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67067) might have been better off not giving an exceptional team like New England any bulletin-board material.

"I think a lot of us in here feel like this is one of those games where we really don't have that much to lose," Keisel said. "If we win the game, well, we were supposed to win, and if we lose the game, we were supposed to lose. They're this big, great team that no one can touch."

The Steelers (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67067) stopped the Patriots (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67054)' record 21-game winning streak in 2004, but they have dropped five of six to New England since 1997 with two losses in AFC championship games.

Still, Smith is convinced there are multiple reasons why the Steelers (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67067) will be the team that makes certain New England doesn't become the first NFL team to sweep a 16-game schedule.

Pittsburgh's defense has allowed the fewest points and yards in the NFL and, Smith said, "We don't expect that to change."

Also, he said, the Steelers (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67067) are more physical than any team New England has faced and are so balanced offensively, the Patriots (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67054) can't stop both Willie Parker (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/224889)'s running and Ben Roethlisberger (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/200315)'s throwing.

If the Patriots (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67054) thought the Ravens (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67065) were physical Monday night when New England was forced to stage a desperation rally to win 27-24 in the final minute, Smith said, wait until they meet up with Pittsburgh.

"They say they played their toughest game last week against Baltimore, but I think we play harder than Baltimore," Smith said. "They're going to be in for it again this week. They're going to have a tough week in front of them."
Smith isn't worried his words might give the Patriots (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67054) a motivational kick during a tough week in which the Patriots (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67054) are playing two physical AFC North teams in a seven-day span. Or that his own teammates will dislike what he is saying.
"They will back me up," Smith said. "Everyone has the same attitude anyway, so it's not like it's a big thing."

If Smith didn't give the Patriots (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67054) enough hey-look-at-this material, here's this nugget for the Patriots (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67054)' receiving corps: Smith said they may have Randy Moss (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/70100), but Cincinnati not New England has the league's best wide receivers.
"They've got Walker and Moss," Smith said, referring to Patriots (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67054) receivers Wes Welker (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/224531) and Randy Moss (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/70100). "But they're not like Cincinnati."

The Steelers (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67067) shut down the Bengals (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67041)' passing game during a 24-10 victory Sunday night, limiting star receiver Chad Johnson (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/69343) to six harmless catches. Carson Palmer (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/140403) completed only 38.6 percent of his passes (17-of-44) and was 11-of-37 (29.7 percent) after Cincinnati's opening drive.

Keisel could only laugh after hearing Smith's comments, saying, "Maybe I should start (guaranteeing games)."
Will he begin doing that next week, when the Steelers (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67067) play the Jacksonville Jaguars (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67064) (8-4)? "Maybe the week after that," he said.

I wonder what kind of talk Tomlin had with him after that statement hit the news wire. To me it sounds like the entire team is tired of hearing about the Pats and is just ready to get out there and get it on with them.

He did kind of backpedal out of it though..

"We're going to win," Smith said. "Yeah, I can guarantee a win. As long as we come out and do what we got to do. Both sides of the ball are rolling, and if our special teams come through for us, we've got a good chance to win."

Personally I'd rather he not say anything of this magnitude but we'll see what happens. If we're going to beat them then we have to do it whether they are all fired up with bulletin board material or not.

That's what worries me too, get fired up all you want and take it out on the players across from you but why give them more bulletin board material. I love trash talking, I think it's great but I don't like guaranteeing wins at all.

As much as I think guaratees should be left to players like 85 and T.O. i kina have to agree w/ what Smitty said!!! If they play the way they can on D, play abalanced O and dont turn the ball over... i cant see us losing this game... as talented as their team is its real only in 4 or so positions... Moss, Samuel, Brady and Thomas are the only studs they have. Their O line plays well with a lead... but they are slow at the tackles. Their secondary -Asante is average. WR's are feeding off of constant doubleteams on Moss, and, less the Eagles/Colts/Ravens (their only close games) nobody has been able to pressure Brady!!! Maroney could be a speacial player but right now he is a non-factor unless him and Faulk are catching passes out of the backfield.
I hate to see a young guy like Ant do this... if it were a guy like Peezy was, a vet, i would of had an easier time swallowing it!! Either way he can/and better back this
sh!t up!!!
The Exfactor to me is coaching, Belichick is gonna have these guys ready to play their best come sunday... hopefully Mike will do th same!!!!

I wouldn't be saying that crap considering we have lost to a 6-6 team, a 5-7 team and a 3-9 team all on the road. The Steelers didn't even look good in those games. Not to mention we gave the Bengals way too many chances to get back in the game last weekend.
I just hope they bring some intensity on the road this time because if they don't it will be a long game.

OK, so what you smoking? Left no chance? Parker left 4 chances out there himself. Ben added another 2. Do that against a 12-0 team and the results won't be the same.

The D played great and really won that game. But this is a different team than the Bungals. All I'm saying is if we play the same as we did against the Bengals (or Fins or Jets or Cards or Broncos or even the last Browns game) I don't think we win. Don't think it will even be close if we play like we did in those games.
But! If we put together a good game on both sides of the ball for once against a quality team (win or lose!) it will show the Steelers have a chance to do some damage in the playoffs.

Love what Anthony Smith brings to the table. Love the decleating hits he lays on wideouts whenever he gets the chance. But he is not an established star in the league yet and IMO should keep his mouth shut and let the veterans talk trash if they must. Personally I don't much care for trash talking. Why give the best team in the league bulletin board material? That is just foolish IMO. Hope Coach Tomlin will give Mr. Smith a little guidance in this matter. He better hope that he plays flawlessly in this game because if you talk the talk you had better walk the walk! :nono:

As far as bulletin board materiall, naw! I do not think AS garners the respect he should yet with other teams. Unless they have played against them. If it were Big Ben, Harrison, or a marquee player then some Patriot hackles may be raised.
I think this does more for Anthony's game than the Pasties.

"**** Brady, **** Belichek, **** Moss, **** Maroney, **** Bruschi, **** the Five layers of Protection, **** Vrabel, and **** Foxboro"

If wee play our best game, even against the Pats best game, we win, no question in my mind. We have a better defense, a better running game, and everyone here get ready for a shocker, a better QB.

Yes I said it, a better QB, Ben is putting up MVP numbers with a fraction of what Brady has in his arsenal. We are going to beat the Pats, Anthony Smith has it right.

A day after he guaranteed the Steelers would beat the Patriots Sunday free safety Anthony Smith didn't back down from his comments. When asked if what he said Wednesday made him a target for a New England wide receiver looking to lay him out with a vicious block, Smith said, "I don't think they have guys like that so that's not something I worry about."
As for Patriots quarterback Tom Brady going after him on passing plays, Smith said, "I hope they do. I haven't been getting a lot of action so hopefully I get a chance to make some big plays, and if the receivers come after to me I welcome it."
Smith's comments Wednesday were not welcome by all of the Steelers.

Coach Mike Tomlin talked to Smith about not speaking for himself and nose tackle Chris Hoke said several of the veteran players spoke with Smith as well. As for what Smith's guarantee, Hoke, who found out about it Wednesday night while watching TV with his son, said, "I would never do that."
Smith said he did it because he was merely saying what he believed.
"We've been having a good week of practice," Smith said. "Everybody's focused and we're going to get a victory. That's just the way I felt."
The Patriots' reaction to Smith's guarantee has been mixed.
When asked about it Wes Welker said, "I don't know...one of those deals that kind of gets blown out of proportion. We have to make sure that we do what we need to do and not worry about the other stuff."
Another Patriots wide receiver, Jabar Gaffney, said Smith's comments constitute bulletin-board material that New England can use to its advantage.
"Yeah, yeah, definitely," Gaffney said, "guaranteeing victory in our home."
And if the Steelers do beat the Patriots?
"I could look like a mind reader or a fortune-teller or something like that," Smith said with a smile. "I know the offense is going to put up some points and the defense, we've just got to eliminate the big plays."

Im sure Tomlin had some choice words for him so I'll be curious to see if Smith makes any more future predictions no matter what the outcome is the weekend.

Smith is just confident, not only in his abilities but in his team mates too. Thats another reason for him saying it. Who cares if the Patsies use it as "bulletin board" material, what a bunch of crap, if it takes that to get up for a game, they've got problems.

i agree with everything that smith said!!! yes if we play steeler football like we all know we can we will win the game!!!!! no doubt! we ruined there streak before and we can do it again BUT I still don't like ANYONE wether they play for the steelers or the browns guaranting a victory. say what you want be as confident as you want but i don't care who you are don't come out and say we will win, that looks bad on you and your organazation IMO.

We can talk all week (or year) about how we can "stop" New England. The fact is: we need to play pissed off. Fag Brady is just too "perfect" in everyone's eyes and our Defense needs hit him........HARD. Forget about all the F***in schemes and match ups! We need to f***in smack these punks in the mouth! I am so sick of hearing about their "perfection". Anthony Smith also needs to keep his mouth shut! What was he think? He's not Joey Porter. He is a second year FS that commits too many penalties! We needed to go in there quietly and take of business. HE screwed that up. Now we must respond. Lately we have had slow starts to our games and we cannot afford that here. It is time to SHUT UP and PLAY!:banging:

FOXBOROUGH -- One of the main themes in the Gillette Stadium locker room today was Steelers safety Anthony Smith's guarantee of a win.

"I don't know if we've ever come out and predicted victory or anything, and we've won a lot of games," quarterback Tom Brady said. "Whether you predict it or not, you've got to show up on Sunday."

Said safety Rodney Harrison: "The game is won and lost between the lines, not in the media. We've been in this situation before, where guys are talking. It just doesn't matter what you say, it's what you do."

Added outside linebacker Mike Vrabel: "If you went back and documented every time someone called their own shot, I mean, what are the chances? You're going to win or you're going to lose. Either way I don't think that prediction will have much bearing on the outcome."

Elsewhere, fullback Heath Evans said that Smith's prediction would be proven correct if the Patriots don't improve their performance, while linebacker Chad Brown acknowledged the comments could be used as motivation.

Linebacker Junior Seau also commented, noting that such a guarantee would never come from the Patriots. He was asked if there is such a thing as bulletin-board material for teams.

"There definitely is," Seau said. "Obviously, there is obviously a build-up before the game and that's the way this started. There is going to be talk every week. We're not going to pay attention to that. We're going to try to do what we do every week, which is work. Hopefully that will be good enough come Sunday. Come Sunday, all the talk will be between the white lines. It always is."

Hell I thought Brown was done!! Nothing to shocking here, keeping it low key. Maybe they know it will happen !!:tt02::tt02:

Smith who?

Brady said he didn't know who safety Anthony Smith was until he started preparing for the Steelers. And he didn't make much of Smith's guarantee that the Steelers would win.

"He's a young player and it's obvious that [there are] guys that we've played in the past that we really respect on that team -- Deshea [Townsend], Troy [Polamalu], Aaron Smith, Casey [Hampton]," Brady said yesterday at a news conference. "Those guys aren't the ones that say it.

"I don't know if we've ever come out and predicted victory or anything, and we've won a lot of games. Whether you predict it or not, he's got to show up on Sunday and try to guard us, play his role, do his job, and we're going to try to make it hard for him."

Patriots coach Bill Belichick also dismissed Smith's claim. "I'm sure they're confident that they can come in here and win. I think if I was in Pittsburgh I'd feel the same way I don't think either team's going into the game not expecting to win it."

As far as Anthony Smith knows, The Steelers dont lose in Dec. . He hasnt lost in Dec yet as a Steeler that's his experience. He stated the obvious, the rest of the team knows that.

Exactly........I want a player to have confidence.....Plus it was just the media makinga bigger deal out of Smith's comments then it really was....Just trying to put more hype into the game.....I just hope Anthony lays Randy Moss out and I'm talking really laying him out....To quote a line from The Karate Kid.....Get him a body bag..................

Bulletin board material or not, there is a postive side to Anthony Smith's comments:

The Patriots have been portrayed as an invincible juggernaut by the media this year. Even before the season started the Patriots were unofficially crowned the super bowl champions. Every week the story is the same, the overbearing Patriots are going to overwhelm the unfortunate opponents. Those teams who rejected that storyline have been the ones that came closest to defeating them.

Anthony Smith has become the unofficial spokesperson of the Steelers this week, expressing overtly that the Steelers are not afraid of the Patriots. The veterans may be too mature to make those statements, but the fact that a rookie player has enough confidence in his team to say that to the media speaks volumes about the Steelers mentality going into Foxborough.
