OWINGS MILLS, Md., Oct. 15 --
If Jonathan Ogden (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Jonathan+Ogden?tid=informline) is not able to play in the Baltimore Ravens (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Baltimore+Ravens?tid=informline)' Nov. 5 game at the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Pittsburgh+Steelers?tid=informline), the 10-time Pro Bowl tackle might not play again this season, Coach Brian Billick (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Brian+Billick?tid=informline) said Monday.
Ogden has been recovering from a hyperextended big toe that he initially injured last season and aggravated in the season opener. He has been practicing with the team in recent weeks, but has been unable to play in a game. If he still can't play after the bye (Oct. 28), then the Ravens might consider placing him on injured reserve.
"It's a very legitimate question: 'Jeez, is this going to happen?' Because at some point, if it's not, then we have to consider holding a roster spot," Billick said during his weekly news conference. "But by the way he moves around [in practice], I'm fairly optimistic. But he's the only one that can really answer it, and he's working very hard."
The Ravens (4-2) have already decided to start Kyle Boller (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Kyle+Boller?tid=informline) at quarterback this weekend in Buffalo (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Buffalo+Bills?tid=informline) in order to give Steve McNair (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Steve+McNair?tid=informline) another week to rest his injured groin and sore back. Boller started on Sunday in Baltimore's 22-3 win over the St. Louis Rams (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/St.+Louis+Rams?tid=informline).
Billick reiterated that McNair -- when he is healthy -- is the Ravens' starting quarterback; "There is no circumstance that I can think of that we would not have him as our starter," Billick said. The decision to start Boller this week is a practical one, and one that McNair, who first injured his groin in the season opener, agreed with.
"Steve McNair doesn't have to prove to anybody his courage," Billick said. "His whole career has been that. But in talking with Steve . . . the idea of getting a chance to be healthy as we approach not quite midseason is intriguing to him because he has been battling through it. And he's been battling through very well in my opinion. But that competitor does come out, and he recognizes the value in doing this, and he signed off on it."
Defensive end Trevor Pryce (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Trevor+Pryce?tid=informline) is getting closer to returning -- the pins in his surgically repaired broken wrist come out this week -- but he will not play against the Bills (1-4).
But center Mike Flynn (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Mike+Flynn?tid=informline), who missed Sunday's game with an injured knee, could be ready to play this week, as could tight end Todd Heap (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Todd+Heap?tid=informline) (hamstring). The Ravens could also choose to rest both players against Buffalo, hoping the extra time will help them heal completely. Baltimore has a bye following its trip to Buffalo.
"The idea of that is very intriguing to us," Billick said. "But we have other priorities between now and then, and that's to beat Buffalo. But these are decisions that we have to make because you're talking about the health of the players."
