Brown & Sanders, are they ready for the spotlight?

February 23, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

There are not many teams that have a group of receivers like the Steelers have right now. The Packers come to mind, the Giants as well but it’s certainly a rarity among the league today. When you have 3 guys that are capable of taking a reception the distance at any given time, the defense simply can’t cover everyone with enough quality personnel to combat every situation.  It’s a distinct advantage for a Quarterback to have multiple targets with  blazing  speed and a fearless attitude at their disposal,  and the Steelers are certainly fortunate to be in this situation.

They struck gold in the last 3 seasons with drafting Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown, and Emmanuel Sanders. Each one of them has a big future in the league but if you take one away, are the other 2 ready to step up to the challenge? With all the hype surrounding Mike Wallace’s future, it’s a real possibility that the trio will become a duo in 2012.

Steelers talking with Wallace’s agent about an extension

February 22, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

Now that the Todd Haley & Ben Roethlisberger soap opera can finally take a back seat to the real news; issues such as how to handle Mike Wallace are now firmly at the forefront.  In an interview on SiriusXM today (as reported by the Pittsburgh Trib), Wallace spoke about how things are going so far this off season and his thoughts on remaining in Pittsburgh:

“(Pittsburgh is) where I would like to be, but we all know that it is a business and you have certain things you have to handle,” Wallace said. “So if I have to go elsewhere, you know Pittsburgh will always be in my heart, but I have to do what I have to do.”

Steelers fully prepared to handle this offseason & the future

February 22, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

Even with all the hype surrounding the Steelers this offseason; Todd Haley, Ben Roethlisberger, Free Agency, who’s running the team, the Steelers are not in any worse shape than they are in any other year organizationally speaking. Sure they are working their way out of a tricky salary cap situation but it’s not as hopeless as it was made out to be initially. The front office knows exactly what they’re doing with player contracts, the draft, and pretty much everything else that involves running the franchise.

For some reason there is this notion that this offseason is so much different than previous years, that the Steelers are somehow potentially in trouble in the future with the salary cap. The Rooney’s and Kevin Colbert have not steered us wrong in the past so we shouldn’t be worried now about how things are going now.  Every year no matter what the cap is, no matter who leaves or comes into the franchise, they always field a competitive team with a solid coaching staff. Ok, I know the whole Bruce Arians thing is debatable but we’ve beaten that horse long enough.

Fate of Aaron Smith yet to be determined

February 18, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

It’s no secret that the Steelers long time defensive lineman hasn’t been the same since 2008, that’s the last time he was able to play in all 16 games. He finished that year with 60 Tackles, 5.5 Sacks, and 4 Passes Defensed.

Since then he’s only played in 15 games since , fighting various injuries and father time (Smith will be 36 this coming April). Up until recent history, #91 was well known as one of the toughest defensive lineman and probably the most underrated in recent history. His ability to diagnose a play before the snap and occupy more than 1 blocker made him a nightmare for opposing offensive lines and the pride of Dick Lebeau’s unit. Originally drafted out of Northern Colorado by Bill Cowher, Smith was a guy you could always count on to be there year in and year out. Other than his rookie year in 1999 when he played in 6 games,  Smith appeared in every regular season game from 2000-2008 except for 2007 when he played in 11.  (more…)

Cost of first round tender and franchising Mike Wallace

February 18, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

Starting on Monday, February 20th, NFL teams can begin using their Franchise Tag if they choose. It’s not required that a player be tagged on this date, it’s simply the earliest they can use it. There will be some teams that jump on this right away I’m sure.

It’s very unlikely the Steelers will tag Mike Wallace immediately but they have about 3 weeks yet until the March 13th deadline for free agency to begin. They could tag Wallace or tender offer him the the required $2.7 million to ensure they get first round compensation should they decline to match an offer he gets from another team. There are rumors that the Bengals may try and throw a substantial amount of money at Wallace, but that’s not confirmed at this time of course.

Recent media interviews by Steelers officials & players

February 17, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

The Steelers have been fairly quiet since the season ended, in terms of media interviews and news announcements. That all began to change within the last week as Steelers GM Kevin Colbert has been making the rounds with the local Pittsburgh media to talk about the offseason.  With so much speculation surrounding the hiring of Todd Haley, comments by Ben Roethlisberger, and the speculation of a power struggle in the front office, Colbert puts all that and more into perspective.  He puts to rest any concerns about who is in control, who makes decisions, who hired who, how the salary cap is being handled and much more.  Basically if you’ve heard one interview you’ve heard them all but each is interesting to listen to nonetheless if you’re a Steelers junkie like we are.

All the questions asked in virtually every interview center around the following:

Key offensive line injuries put Steelers in a bind

February 16, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

According to Max Starks’ tweet this morning, his rehab is progressing from the torn ACL he suffered in that fateful wildcard loss to Denver.

@maxstarks78: Good morning tweeps! Another day of rehab w/ @Legursky. The knee is coming along nicely! #olinerehab

The return of a healthy Max Starks and Doug Legursky is something everyone is watching around the Steeler Nation.  Starks was the savior of the offensive line last year. If he doesn’t return there’s no guarantee that Ben Roethlisberger even survives the remainder of the season, let alone plays well enough to get to the pro bowl.  Starks only signed a 1 yr. deal to return to Pittsburgh,  so he will be an unrestricted free agent.  Kevin Colbert and the Steelers coaches are in quite a quandary with several players with similar injuries.  Guys like Starks, Casey Hampton, and Rashard Mendenhall all have had ACL surgeries this past month.  (more…)

Wallace isn’t the only receiver the Steelers need to worry about for the future

February 16, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

There are many tough decisions that the Steelers must deal with this offseason, not the least of which is trying to sign Mike Wallace to a long term deal.   If worse comes to worse they can franchise him to help ensure his services for another season, thus giving them more time to work on a long term deal.  They’ve used their franchise tag in a similar manner in the past, on Lamarr Woodley for example.   The team was able to work out a longer deal with Woodley during training camp and thus freed up the tag for use should they need it in the future.  Had they not franchised the Pharaoh it’s no guarantee he would still be with the team this coming season.

Franchising a player is never a cap friendly move but it’s a necessary one to buy the 2 sides time to work out a deal. I would not be surprised at all to see Wallace get tagged, especially given the team’s cap situation this year. However as the title of this article states, Wallace isn’t the only big player they have to worry about for the future.

Kevin Colbert talks with KDKA about the Steelers offseason.

February 15, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert joined KDKA this morning to talk about the pertinent topics at hand facing the team this offseason. Key talking points include Hines Ward, in which Colbert mentioned there still has not been a decision made on his future. He talks about making sure you do the right thing and be sensitive to all those involved including the players in the locker room when it comes to such a great player like Hines. “Ultimately our job is to win a championship and we have to make the decisions that will give us the best chance to do that.”

He can’t speculate how far the team will be over the salary cap by the March 13th deadline because the league will not give out the final cap number for 2012 until the first week of March.

Harrison & Roethlisberger both open to restructures to help Steelers.

February 15, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

The Steelers have slightly less than a  month from now to get below the NFL’s salary cap; March 13, at 4pm EST is the deadline.  While they are in panic mode, the Steelers never are though, there is still significant work to be done. Normally you like to be in a position when free agency starts to be able to make moves to help your team. That’s not the case for the Steelers and most likely won’t be the case when free agency starts.
