Brown & Sanders, are they ready for the spotlight?

February 23, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

There are not many teams that have a group of receivers like the Steelers have right now. The Packers come to mind, the Giants as well but it’s certainly a rarity among the league today. When you have 3 guys that are capable of taking a reception the distance at any given time, the defense simply can’t cover everyone with enough quality personnel to combat every situation.  It’s a distinct advantage for a Quarterback to have multiple targets with  blazing  speed and a fearless attitude at their disposal,  and the Steelers are certainly fortunate to be in this situation.

They struck gold in the last 3 seasons with drafting Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown, and Emmanuel Sanders. Each one of them has a big future in the league but if you take one away, are the other 2 ready to step up to the challenge? With all the hype surrounding Mike Wallace’s future, it’s a real possibility that the trio will become a duo in 2012.

Steelers talking with Wallace’s agent about an extension

February 22, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

Now that the Todd Haley & Ben Roethlisberger soap opera can finally take a back seat to the real news; issues such as how to handle Mike Wallace are now firmly at the forefront.  In an interview on SiriusXM today (as reported by the Pittsburgh Trib), Wallace spoke about how things are going so far this off season and his thoughts on remaining in Pittsburgh:

“(Pittsburgh is) where I would like to be, but we all know that it is a business and you have certain things you have to handle,” Wallace said. “So if I have to go elsewhere, you know Pittsburgh will always be in my heart, but I have to do what I have to do.”

Possible mid-round WR targets for the Steelers should Wallace depart

February 22, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

Right about the time you thought the Pittsburgh Steelers’ “Offseason of Discontent” was coming to an end the speculation that Pro Bowl Wide Receiver Mike Wallace could be on the move has surfaced. Wallace is a restricted free agent which means the Steelers have certain rights to Wallace but should Wallace choose to sign elsewhere; the Steelers would be granted that team’s first-round draft pick.

For teams like the New England Patriots or Cincinnati Bengals who have two first-round selections it might be a distinct possibility. My personal opinion is that the Steelers always find a way to keep guys they truly value and if they believe Wallace is worthy of roughly nine million dollars per season they’ll get it done. (more…)

Steelers fully prepared to handle this offseason & the future

February 22, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

Even with all the hype surrounding the Steelers this offseason; Todd Haley, Ben Roethlisberger, Free Agency, who’s running the team, the Steelers are not in any worse shape than they are in any other year organizationally speaking. Sure they are working their way out of a tricky salary cap situation but it’s not as hopeless as it was made out to be initially. The front office knows exactly what they’re doing with player contracts, the draft, and pretty much everything else that involves running the franchise.

For some reason there is this notion that this offseason is so much different than previous years, that the Steelers are somehow potentially in trouble in the future with the salary cap. The Rooney’s and Kevin Colbert have not steered us wrong in the past so we shouldn’t be worried now about how things are going now.  Every year no matter what the cap is, no matter who leaves or comes into the franchise, they always field a competitive team with a solid coaching staff. Ok, I know the whole Bruce Arians thing is debatable but we’ve beaten that horse long enough.

Players to watch in the combine for the Steelers: Defense

February 22, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

A couple days ago we wrote up some thoughts on players who the Steelers may be targeting on offense as they do their evaluations this week at the NFL combine. Similar to our list of players to watch on offense, this defensive list of prospects is broken down by the likely position the Steelers could go to address the needs on defense.  For example; since the team doesn’t figure to go Cornerback or Safety early on we’re profiling value picks at these positions for the team.

Inside Linebackers: The Steelers figure to address this position within the first 3 rounds, more than likely 2nd or 3rd round but depending on who’s available.

Oh happy day! Roethlisberger & Haley finally meet

February 21, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

The day we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived! The Steeler Nation can rest easy now that Big Ben and new offensive coordinator Todd Haley finally met today according to Post Gazette’s Ed Bouchette via twitter: @EdBouchette News many have waited for: Ben & #steelers new OC Todd Haley finally met, sat down and talked.

It’s been nothing short of amazing how much media attention this whole insignificant saga has gotten since Haley was formally introduced at a press conference earlier this month. Twitter, Facebook, the water cooler, the line at the grocery store, everybody and their brother has been wondering when it would happen.  You couldn’t go a day without somebody talking about it.

Bouchette talks Wallace, Big Ben, Haley, & Free Agency

February 21, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

Ed Bouchette’s latest chat on 93.7 The Fan.  We’ve highlighted a few of the key topics covered on the Vinnie & Cook show today, and of course be sure to listen to the full show:

Mike Wallace: Ed feels there’s definite danger of losing Mike Wallace but nothing definite yet, and that franchising Wallace is not going to happen.

The team will still tender Wallace  $2.7 million so they will get a first round pick in this years’ draft if he’s signed away by another team.  They could also opt to match whatever offer he potentially gets and still be able to keep them.

Steelers Ready for Most Important Combine In Recent Years

February 21, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

The 2012 National Football League’s Scouting Combine begins this week in Indianapolis and who would have ever thought something like this would grow into such a ‘must see TV’ event? While coaches, scouts and general managers find spots throughout the Lucas Oil Stadium seats, potential NFL superstars will strut their stuff in hopes of increasing their draft stock with millions watching and DVR’ing at home.

The combine has become a place where dreams can be made and shattered in the blink of an eye. Strength and physical appearance do not always translate to instant success on the field. Just ask Mike Mamula about that. (more…)

Multiple early round draft picks a real possibility for Steelers

February 21, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

The Steelers haven’t had 2 picks in the first round since the dynasty years of the 70’s.  Normally that’s a good sign that you’re doing something right in running an NFL franchise. Unless you are the Patriots where you wheel and deal players like used cars, you take your one first round pick (hopefully near the end of the round) and use it as best you can. The Steelers rarely miss on high profile players in the draft, so the possibility of have 2 picks at their disposal has to be intriguing if nothing else.  I placed a reference list, at the end of this article, of the first round draft choices by the Steelers since 1990.  Of that list the only real “busts” were Jamain Stephens (we all remember him needing help just to finish the run test) and Troy Edwards. The Steelers got caught up in the “must have a receiver” mentality that year and reached for Edwards who never panned out.

Back to the present now, if the Steelers can’t hang on to restricted free agent Mike Wallace, they’ll get a first round draft pick in return.  While that’s technically not a given at this point, it’s assumed that they will 1st round tender Wallace before free agency starts.  (more…)

Players to watch at the combine for the Steelers: Offense

February 21, 2012 Posted by SteelerAddicts

The NFL combine starts this week and Steelers coaches will be heading to Indianapolis with the rest of the teams in the league. It’s an exciting time as these future NFL hopefuls put their best foot forward to impress potential employers.  We’ve put together a list of some players to watch that the Steelers may be interested in come draft time in April and thus could be checking out at the combine. The coaches, scouts, and trainers will be looking at every position available though and getting as much information as possible on every prospect.  This list though will consist mainly of players where the Steelers figure to potentially look for help on offense based on current need.

Offensive Tackle: A potential spot where the Steelers could go with their first or 2nd round pick. If Marcus Gilbert moves to the left side than they have several options available should they want a Tackle in this draft.
