Steelers Conclude Preseason As Panthers Visit

Affiliate – The Pittsburgh Steelers will wrap-up their preseason schedule with a visit from the Carolina Panthers. They’re goal for this contest is to remain healthy – especially considering they lost offensive lineman David DeCastro last week to a grueling injury.

The Steelers are a veteran team with little to prove overall. They’ve already shown that they have a good grasp of Todd Haley’s offense and should be able to move the ball quite well this season. Aside from cameos from the starters, don’t expect to see much from the Steelers in their fourth preseason game.

The Steelers will have a couple of things to check off their to-do list in the finale, so it won’t be a complete walkover. NFL odds makers list the Pittsburgh Steelers as a 3.5-point favorite for this contest.

Receiver Mike Wallace has arrived at the Steelers facility after a training camp holdout and he’s finally back with the team. He won’t play in the preseason finale but hopes to be ready for the opener against Denver.

The Steelers still have a couple of roster battles going at positions like running back, cornerback and linebacker.

The running backs will get some more auditions in the finale as there figures to be plenty of work early in the season even if Isaac Redman is healthy. Jonathan Dwyer will start, but  Baron Batch and Chris Rainey will the bulk of the action.

At cornerback, Keenan Lewis and Cortez Allen are fight for the left cornerback position. Both are trying to assert themselves as the player to replace William Gay and Allen appears to have the upper hand.

At linebacker, the Steelers have been preparing for life without James Harrison and Chris Carter has apparently sewed up that job. He had a sack, a pair of quarterback hurries and a tackle for a loss in last week’s preseason contest but others like Marshall McFadden, Brandon Johnson and Sean Spence will play in the finale to try to work themselves in the rotation.
