Put another notch on the draft pick totem pole, the Steelers secure another today as T Kelvin Beachum signs his 4 yr. deal with the team. Beachum was the Steelers final draft choice, 7B, of their compensatory picks given to them by the NFL.
Ed Bouchette broke the news via twitter on Thursday evening: #steelers reel in another 7th rounder, G Kelvin Beachum. Only 2 draft picks unsigned of 9
As Ed mentioned, there are only 2 remaining picks to be signed of the draft class for this year. 3rd rounder Sean Spence, LB out of Miami and 1st round guard David DeCastro.
Beachum, 6’3″ 303 lbs will compete with a host of offensive lineman on the Steelers roster for what is likely to be 9 roster spots, possibly 10. He started at LT in all 52 games he played in at SMU, also was added to the Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy Award watch lists.
The big lineman is also a high character type of player, something the Steelers always love to have on their team. According to Steelers.com: Beachum also had an impact off the field, serving as a student representative to the SMU Board of Trustees and as President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He was also on SMU President R. Gerald Turner’s Commission on Substance Abuse, the Student Affairs Leadership Council and the SMU Athletic Council.
Beachum will have his chance to make the roster at tackle, however considering the competition he’ll be facing it’s possible he could be a practice squad candidate if things don’t work out with the final 53. He’s no stranger to starting and has considerable experience to aid him in his quest to make the team. It remains to be seen if he can unseat one of the other tackles on the roster now: Willie Colon, Jonathan Scott, 2010 draft pick Marcus Gilbert, and 2012 2nd rounder Mike Adams. Look for the team to likely keep a maximum of 4 tackles on the regular season roster.
