Immediately following the Mr. Irrelevant pick of the NFL draft every year (final overall draft pick), front offices and coaches from every team get on the phone and start calling college players who weren’t drafted in any of the 7 rounds. Scott Brown from the Pittsburgh Tribune Review and Steelers.com tell us who those players are for the Steelers in 2012.
These players have a tough time making the final roster, but periodically you do come across some diamonds in the rough that end up making the final roster each year. In 2011, Wesley Saunders, John Clay each made the team and contributed during the regular season.
Of the group the Steelers signed below, a few names could end up being significant contributors. One in particular, Grant Ressel from Missouri will do battle with incumbent place kicker Sean Suisham. He struggled in 2011, going only 9-16 in FG’s however in 2010 and 2009 he went 17-19 and 26-27 respectively.
Just some food for thought as we see who else will join the Steelers draft picks this offseason.
