Pittsburgh native and long-time back-up quarterback Charlie Batch announced via Twitter today that he has signed a 1-year deal to remain with the team for 2012. This comes as really no surprise and now makes one wonder what the future holds for Byron Leftwich.
Batch is in his 15th NFL season and his 11th overall with the Steelers. Batch previously played for the Detroit Lions and played his college ball at Eastern Michigan University. The Steelers now have four QBs in the fold along with Batch. Starter Ben Roethlisberger, Troy Smith and Jarrett Johnson who were both signed in the current off-season.
Speculation now will surround Byron Leftwich’s future. Many believe that Leftwich is the more viable option to back up Roethlisberger due to his youth and better passing ability, but Leftwich has reportedly been sought by former Steelers’ offensive coordinator Bruce Arians in Indianapolis. The signing of Batch could merely be a safety measure should Leftwich sign elsewhere.
