Adam Schefter from ESPN is reporting that Keith Butler will join Bruce Arians in Indianapolis, as their new Defensive Coordinator.
It’s been widely assumed that when Dick Lebeau retires, Butler would take over the defense. According to
Jim Wexell this morning via twitter though the team should be safe for the time being, Dick Lebeau isn’t leaving anytime soon. “They’ll have to throw me outta here “. So it’s not an immediate crisis that Butler is jumping ship but it is another change to deal with for Coach Tomlin and the Rooney’s as they try to put together their staff for the upcoming combine and NFL Draft.
Last year the Arizona Cardinals wanted permission to speak with Butler about their vacant Defensive Coordinator job but the team denied that request. They know Butler is an up and coming assistant coach in the NFL and they didn’t want to lose him. There was some speculation after the 2010 season that Dick Lebeau may retire, but fortunately that didn’t happen.
Coach Butler has been with the Steelers for 9 years, dating back to the Bill Cowher era, and has studied under Dick Lebeau in preparation for a future coordinator position. To say that he is well prepared to coach a defense is an understatement. Butler said today he will listen to what the Colts have to say, but that him leaving the Steelers “is not a done deal.”
