The Steelers announced today that they have hired back one of their own, Carnell Lake, to fill the lone vacant spot Tomlin’s staff as the new Secondary coach. Lake was a 5 time pro bowl player and in his day was the best in the business at Safety. A man who played every position in the secondary as well as Lake did seems to be an obvious choice to take over the Steelers defensive backs if you ask me. He must be salivating at the chance to coach guys like Troy Polamalu and Ike Taylor (assuming Taylor is resigned). I’m really anxious though to see what he can do with the young guys like Ryan Mundy, Anthony Madison, Keenan Lewis, and rest of the secondary that underachieved in many ways in recent years.
Lake is relatively new to coaching, having been an intern for the Eagles in 2009 and then coaching the defensive backs at UCLA last year. He’s definitely got his work cut out for him as he tries to improve this group, specifically at Cornerback. He’s got some good talent to work with but also some decisions that he’ll have input in as the offseason moves forward towards the draft.
